The Steely Dan Thread

Dunno if they'd be the right kind of band to qualify for a child board here - but I'd hazard a guess this place is home to quite a few Steely Dan fans right?

I've loved the Dan literally since birth - as my Dad was a massive fan. One of the highlights of my life was when he and I went to see them do the Hammersmith Apollo in London. Great night! :D

My old man passed away about 8 years ago, so when my brother and I were going through his things, I appropriated the Dan CDs! As well as the entire collection of Dan albums I've also got all four of Donald Fagen's solo albums and both of Walter Becker's.

The only albums by the guys I don't really like are "Gaucho" (the last album before the 20 year hiatus - it's OK, just a bit overcooked) and the two albums they did after the hiatus "Two Against Nature" (which is too much like Fagen's solo stuff only not as good) and "Everything Must Go" (perhaps the least memorable album I've ever heard).

But "Can't Buy A Thrill", "Countdown To Ecstasy", "Pretzel Logic", "Katy Lied", "The Royal Scam" and especially "Aja" are all bona fide masterpieces. The live album "Alive In America" I quite like too, although I think I've listened to it to many times.

What about you guys? [/i]

I've always liked a bit of Steely Dan. Especially like some of the stories their lyrics tell. One of my favorite lyric lines of all times
is their line from Deacon Blues "They got a name for the winners in this world/ I want a name when I lose / They call Alabama the Crimson Tide/ Call me Deacon Blues" Clever

I think my favourite song by them is "Peg" which is, from what I can gather about a young photographer who's doing a shoot with an aged porn star he loved in his youth - and still fancies her! Belting little tune that is.

I also love the words to "Doctor Wu".

For some reason, Caves of Altamira is the tune that keeps popping into my head whenever I'm driving to Church.
My favorite Dan song is probably Black Cow, though.

Saw the Dan in 2006. I go through phases as to which song is my fav. Right now it's the non-LP single "Dallas".

Yep.A big fan also.
Hadn't listened to them in a while, but came across ' The making of Aja',
which got me listening to them again lately.
Aja's gotta be the most complete and perfect album of all albums.
Were going to see them a couple of years ago,but had to cancel out due to holiday trip.
Did see Fagan with Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs last year which was great.
When I shopped at I-Tunes for the latest Fagan album, some recommendations came up,
with similar sounding bands and found a couple which were really good.
State Cows-Lost in a mind game
Nightshift-Full Moon. Two guys from Paris with a love for Dan and Westcoast.
Jango-Red Ray Dawn.Absolutely fantastic album.
Norwegian Fords.2 guys from ,yes,Norway who's got some great songs also.Try Superglue Kiss.
Also like the later China Crisis albums which were produced by Walter Becker.Nice and slick

Happy Birthday to Donald Fagen .... 65 today.

Josie is my favorite track and I have fond memories of the Fez. The best Steely Dan album for me is Aja.

How's this for a bump! :D

Just to say back in October 2017 I saw the Dan (sadly minus Walter Becker). Donald Fagen was on TOP form, and The Doobie Brothers provided KILLER support. Without a doubt second greatest gig I've ever seen (first was Fleetwood Mac).

Oh man does Donald Fagen ROCK.

Steely is still alive. Dan is dead.

Fagen wants to rename himself "Donald Fagen and The Steely Dan Band". I think the promoters should let him. When I saw him back in '17 he did a solo tune amongst the Dan hits and the crowd went insane!

Yeah, wasn't bad - but his masterpiece will always be this one.
