The bottom line according to the story is that it's about securing copyrights for his songs.

I obviously don't understand how copyrights work. If copyrights are due to expire then just re-copyright them, right?

as long as the artists has not signed them away... song copyright lasts for the lifetime of the artist and passes to their heirs..
