Cool IPod Trick

I'm sure that I'm not the only person to have discovered this, but here you go:

Slowly pull the headphone jack out while you are listening to a favorite song and at some point you will get a "ghosting" effect. It sounds like you are hearing the song as if you were standing outside the doors to a concert venue and were hearing the sound check.

I have a IPod 2nd Gen, so I'm not sure if this will work on all versions or any other MP3 player. I will be getting a IPod 5th Gen later this week and will try it then.

While this does sound good and even great on some songs, others not so much. Great song to try it on is Steve Perry's "Missing You" DON'T try it on is Steve Perry's "I Stand Alone", something about the way that song is layered makes it horrible to listen to that way, even though it is one of my favorite songs.

Anyway hope some of you find some enjoyment out of this little trick.

I used to do this with my portable CD player in the car. I'd halfway pull out the cassette adapter jack and get that effect. What it sounded like to me was hearing some instruments in isolation. Like, for example, I'd hear only the left channel guitars, in the distance, on "Dogman" while the vocals were still in the right channel. Or the drums would sound far away and like they were in an airplane hangar...weird effects. For a while, I'd listen to whole albums like this to see how they sounded.

All I think your doing is taking it from stereo and then eliminating one of the channels when you pull the plug out half way. Back in the early 80's you could do that with a cassette tape in a home stereo, depending on the type of cassette being played, mono, stereo, etc. Only a certain one would work, I don't remember which one, but it was cool, I could play a Beatles cassette tape and if I for example turned the balance knob all the way to the left, you would hear only the drums, bass and lead guitar tracks. If I turned the balance knob all the way to the right, I would hear the rhythm guitar and lead vocal tracks. So with what your doing now with the plug for the ipod, your probably just doing the same exact thing.
