Me too. I expected better. I like the flag on the tail, but it's way too busy, and then the rest of the plane is just barren. Almost like it's not finished.

The slight resemblance to the American flag may attract it to be targeted by anti-American/terrorist groups. But you never know.

They forgot to put the "O" on the slight resemblance.

You do that and there would probably be people trying to shoot it down from their back yards.

They had a flag on the last paint job. A small sticker or something. If they wanted to paint the tail as a flag, why not like this? It's too big for the page, so just click on it.

I like the flag on the tail, but otherwise, it looks too much like Air France.

I like it! Less is better since a gallon of paint weighs 10 lbs. Less paint/Less weight= more freight. That's a lot of freight each aircraft can carry over it's lifetime! BTW... I'm a diehard AA flyer and their fares beat SW a lot of the time. SW just doesn't let their fares be compared with other airlines!

Don't they have to have a flag to be a "flag carrier"?

I look at it, and think "keyboard with measles"...
so yeah, a 'terrorist threat' angle is probably mitigated.

Talk of the possible buyout/merger between AA and US Airways, based here in PHX, has people speculating the new logo/paint was done in an effort to bring the struggling airline more in line with the US Airways logo/paint. You be the judge.
(Sorry for the SIZE! Didn't have time to reduce it at the time.)

Good question. I don't know. Let me know if you come through DFW. I'll try to get up there and see you.

The new paint scheme is now in service. Here's a shot of the 777-300 Extended Range on the pad at DFW. We've been flying the 777 for 8 or 9 years, but this is one of the first 300 series AA took delivery of.
