Yikes... Also thought to have been started by the band's pyro. They reference the 2003 Rhode Island tragedy at the end of the article.

Eerie... Almost ten years exactly later and this band also lost a member.

This is terrible news, and I absolutely hate reading stuff like this.

I can't imagine going out like that, and you'd think that these dumb-ass clubs would be banned from doing pyrotechnics after the other fires. I understand wanting to wow the crowds, but it's just not safe in small clubs. Jail time should be served by all involved. Maybe that would send a message and save further lives.

I may have shared this before, but when I first heard about the Station fire, I instantly thought about the KISS tribute band show I saw here in a local restaurant/club called Juanita's a few years before. (I'm not going to name the band - don't want their names attached to it) Great show! But the ceiling above the stage was covered in this droopy, loosely-tacked black fabric, and a few seconds soon as 'Gene' did his fire-spitting trick, we noticed smoke and the first bits of flame coming from part of that fabric. 'Paul' noticed it and said jokingly in the mic, "I didn't know it was supposed to do that!', then someone handed him a glass of water and he tossed it up there -- it didn't fully extinguish the flame, but the crowd at this point thought it was funny. A few seconds later an employee came up with a fire extinguisher and put it out, and the show went on. None of us thought much about it then, though looking back, that club was dark and had two fairly tight exits, too. Maybe we all got lucky.
In the strangest coincidence, a few years later I saw Great White play here locally in 2004, only the year after the Station fire incident, and this same KISS cover band was opening for them. I ended up on the front row for the show, sitting right next to 'Paul', and brought the story up to him in casual conversation. He was a really nice guy and we talked for a bit, but seemed to tune that part out and started talking about something else. It may have been in poor taste for me to even mention it, and I don't blame him.

You would think people in charge of setting up and running these gigs would learn lessons from previous club fires, but they don't.
