Today at 6:00 pm Eastern time, Sony is holding a press conference which will be airing live on many sites (I'm watching it on IGN). The rumors all seem to point to the PS4 being officially announced and unveiled today. Any other gamers in here watching the event? I'm anxious to see what is announced, and I am MORE than ready for the next console launch! :D

Supposedly, to play your PS3 games, you'll have to stream them as the PS4 has a totally different architecture.

Yeah, I've read that. I just sold my PS3, as I never played it anymore. Hadn't touched it in at least 6 months, so I sold it to a buddy. The PS3 games won't affect me. I'm just really excited to see what the graphics are going to look like. They've estimated that they'll be 6 to 7 times more detailed, so this should look pretty damn cool! I've been a 360 player this generation, but Sony just might re-claim the title for me. :D

Sony will totally blow the competition away with PS4. Can't wait !!
My 360 has been a dusty paperweight the last six months. So I'll probably stay away from nextbox!
Kinect was great when they showed the demo few years back but it's really crappy as a final product.

I'll stick with my NES.

Seriously...I just found it this past week, and I've only played one level of Zelda. My PS3 is used mainly as a DVD player...sometimes Madden or Transformers. I'm sure as hell not a gamer.

After weeks of speculation, Sony officially unveiled its next console from a live event in New York today.

Sony's Andrew House said the new console will create "experiences that surpass gamers' wildest expectations."
Lead system architect on the PlayStation 4, Mark Cerny, said "the development of a next-gen platform started about five years ago" and that it's goal is "freeing developers from technological barriers."
Cerny said the platform is "by game creators for game creators" and that its architecture is "like a PC, but supercharged." PS4 uses the X86 CPU and has 8GB of memory and a local hard drive. It uses APU technology and GDDR5 memory, which is typically reserved for "top of the line, high end graphics cards."
The pillars of PS4 are Simple, Immediate, Social, Integrated and Personalized. PlayStation 4 supports suspending and reloading play sessions. The console has a secondary chip for uploading and downloading in the background. Digital games can be played as they are being downloaded.

The system supports seamless uploads of gameplay, spectating friends' gameplay sessions in real time as well as integrated chat. Players will have profile pages like Facebook integrated to the "full PlayStation ecosystem."

PlayStation 4 offers personalization and will "get to know you."

Amazing !!!

I am SERIOUSLY pumped for the next generation now! Sony did an amazing job with the conference, and definitely hooked me in wanting to see more. I think the Vita functionality is awesome! The concept of being able to take your PS4 game with you on the go is very cool. I'm anxious to see what Microsoft comes up with and make a comparison. :D Drive Club looked pretty amazing from what I could tell. The streaming was extremely low quality, but I think it's going to look very cool. Infamous Second Son looks really promising too. I'm ready for the next gen systems, and the wait won't be too long now. November will be here before I know it.

As they didn't show the console nor mention media format, maybe everything will be downloadable content with no physical disc to buy?

I'm sure they're saving price point details, exact launch date, and hardware reveal for the E-3 conference in June. Physical discs aren't going anywhere in this generation. I suspect that it will be slowly transitioning to digital only towards the end of this next cycle, but who knows? That's my guess anyways. The PS1,2 and 3 games will have to be played through their Cloud service, as the PS4 is not backwards compatible. If I end up going PS this generation, it won't bother me as I don't have any PS games now. I'll be up in the air on which system to go with until I hear a LOT more details. I normally buy all of the new systems, but I'm scaling back this generation. Just getting one system.

Never really played video games since the 80's. Nothing against them, the games look awesome. Just seems like a crazy time investment to learn all those buttons on the controllers these days. I'll stick with Pac Man.

What really makes me a bit po'ed is the ps4 and the xbox 720 "might" lock out used games. Which means you won't be able to sell your used games. Which does lend itself to being a download only console. hmm...

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has told Eurogamer that PlayStation 4 will not block the use of second-hand games, contrary to various reports, speculation and even a Sony patent unearthed last month.

I sat down with Yoshida a few hours after the PS4 reveal tonight and one of the first things I asked was whether used games would be blocked.

"Do you want us to do that?" he asked.

No, I said. I think, if you buy something on a disc, that you have a kind of moral contract with the person you've bought it from that you retain some of that value and you can pass it on.

Do you agree, I asked?

"Yes. That's the general expectation by consumers," said Yoshida. "They purchase physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that's my expectation."

So if someone buys a PlayStation 4 game, I asked, you're not going to stop them reselling it?

"Aaaah," was Yoshida's initial answer, but seemingly only because he'd forgotten his line. "So what was our official answer to our internal question?" he asked his Japanese PR advisor. The advisor stepped in but didn't seem to answer clearly, at least to my ears. Yoshida then took control again firmly:

"So, used games can play on PS4. How is that?"

I said I thought that was fine.

Interestingly, I also spoke to a Sony source elsewhere at the event this evening who told me that the anti used-game patent discovered last month was actually nothing to do with PlayStation 4 at all.

The patent suggested that discs would come branded with a contactless tag that could be recognised and read by your console, which would then bind it to you and prevent you from selling it on.

But whatever reason Sony did have for patenting it, it sounds like it wasn't for its next-generation console. Hopefully Microsoft will also avoid this ludicrous technology with its next-generation Xbox as well.

Tell you honestly, if not for the Elder Scrolls series I would still be in my NES world. Plus, I've recently developed a serious OCD for collecting Atari 2600 games.

Last time I played any video games was Commando in '86:

And before Commando were these:

Nothing else interests me. If I walked into a place that had any of these four games working, I'd plunk a quarter or two down for shits and giggles.
