Various parts of the valley got snow today. I've seen flurries only 3 or 4 times in the 26 years I've lived here but today was the first time it actually stuck and stayed for about 45 mins. or so. Should have seen all the kids out playing in it - some in shorts of course!

This was my backyard at about 5pm.

The only thing that sucks is that you didn't get more. That is a dusting, not snow. Take that from a guy that lives where it does snow. The kids have fun and it's great to have for a little while. Back in 1968, when I was 9 years old, it snowed in Spokane for about 4 days straight. We accumulated about 2' on the ground in places, but when the snow plows pushed all the snow off to the side of the road we had 6 and 7 foot snow banks. It was fantastic! We made caves and insulated them with old newspapers. We would take a few 2x4's and a piece of plywood to hold the ceiling up from caving in. Soon, the tempurature dropped to 20 degrees below zero and we couldn't go to school or play outside for about 2 weeks. Now, that sucked! Can you imagine 4 kids from ages 4-9 driving their mommy crazy indoors for 2 weeks?

Well, if you want to talk snow my friend.... I moved to Arizona from Winter Park, CO, Elev. 9,100 ft. We had snow on the ground 8 mos. of the year. It was very common to get 30-36" in a single, overnight snowfall. The last year we lived there, I got in 136 ski days! One thing to keep in mind about the snowfall at that elevation is every inch of snow that falls accumulates and stays all season long. Sure, you get a fair amount of packing but it doesn't melt and go away until the snow-pack begins to melt in about mid-may. Winter Park only has on average 33 frost-free nights per year.... PER YEAR! That means the snow that was dropped in Sept. is still there at the base of the entire season's dnowfall until about July when all the snow if finally melted from the previous season. And that's when it's not nice to live there. It's called "mud season" and brother, let me tell ya..... YUCK! Everything you own becomes a dingy haze of brown as all that snow melt from the ski area's summit of 12,200' finds its way to lower ground - with the town right in its path! But you're right, that was a dusting. The ultra strange thing about it is that it actually stuck! The few days prior had been in the upper 70's with Monday hitting 80 deg. The low yesterday was only around 40-something so all-in-all not conducive to allowing the flakes to accumulate. It was rather pretty nonetheless.

Ha! That's not snow. Two weekends ago, we got 30 inches (and that was just one storm) of snow here in the Boston area. Last weekend we got 6 to 8 inches of snow. The picture below is our snowfall for this Saturday!

I know, I know.... when compared to well.... anywhere actually, our dusting doesn't impress. But hey, this is the middle of the God-forsaken desert where it barely even rains let alone snow so it was kinda cool.
I was watching CNN this morning and they were talking about this current low pressure system making its way across the midwest and how much snow it was dumping everywhere but supposedly it's gaining strength and is really going to hammer you guys in New England by early Saturday.

And to think we fired up our fireplace last night and it wasn't even lower than 40 degrees out here in Cali.

It's funny watching everyone try to one up each other on their snow. I can get the excitement over the snow in Arizona, because it's the excitement we'd have with that dusting, if it were to happen here in Florida! Snow is snow when you live where it's not expected!! That said, our high is 88 today. Seeing the snow and cold around the country right now, I think I'm actually good with that. Though it's a little too warm for February for me!!

Ok all of you snow competitors. Look at this years stats so far! This is many US cities over 100,000 population. I grew up in erie, pa which takes top honors. I have always tried to explain to people that the snow there was worse than most cities, simply because of where it sits on Lake Erie. They just never got the news coverage other places get, because its not a metropolis. But everyone always thinks they had that kind of snow too. This is this year.... growing up there in the 70's and 80's was so many more inches its ridiculous. Now you know why I live in Florida.
