Queensryche Frontman Chucks Fan's Phone

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Wed May 29, 2013 6:42 pm

Kind of a dick move. At the same time, I am tired of having peoples' cell phones shoved in my face at concerts. Whatever happened to just enjoying the moment? Comedian, Louie CK, had a good bit about this recently. Anyway, I am going to side with Geoff Tate on this one.

I'm siding with the fan. It may be distracting for the performer, but you have to remember the fan BOUGHT A TICKET. Don't be a dick just because you don't want your picture taken. The days of "no photos" ended when cameras ended up on phones. GT is a dick.

Agreed. Unless the ticket clearly says "No photos" cameras, etc., he had no moral right to do that. Just another jerk move by Tate.

Geoff's a douche. Instead of a good memory for that ticket holder, he went home with a bad one.

Poor Geoff. It must be SO FUCKING HARD doing what you love* and getting paid for it.

(*Though he apparently never really wanted to join a metal band way back when, but that's life.)

I don't side with him at all. While I'm sure cameras and phones are a distraction for bands performing these days, they've become a norm at shows now. As a fan (not of him however, lol) it can be a pain too, esp if you're short like me and someone towering over 6 ft is in front of you AND holding a camera up the whole time, yeah it's annoying, but just the way it is now. He's an idiot for singing right into it but then grabbing it and turning around and tossing it like that. It could have hit someone and probably caused a frenzy of some sort in the crowd, which again, as a fan, is no fun to deal with being stuck anywhere near in a crowded venue, turns into a safety issue. Sorry, but he acted like a toddler. He's an ass.

That fan spend their hard earned money on that ticket, if he wants to take a picture or record a short little video then he has every right too.

Most of the "no cameras" these days applies to what are considered "professional" cameras. Since most affordable point-and-shoot cameras these days take big, clear pics they are usually banned by the band. I went to see Iced Earth and before the doors opened, a roadie came out and told the crowd that there were no cameras allowed and if you had a camera to take it back to your car. If they caught you with a camera, they'd take it from you and give it back to you after the show.

I think bands/clubs expect people to shoot on their phones.

This is one band I really want to see live. Jon Schaffer is one of the better rhythm players in metal and one of the nicer guys as well. Would love to catch them sometime.

How can ANYONE possible side with this fucktard? Throwing someone's phone arrogantly back into the crowd after playing up to it? What a grade a WANKER.

That is a dick move.

Van Halen have had several full shows recorded in the front rows on the last U.S. tour from iPhones and they encourage it.

While it was a jackass type of move, I can't fully blame him. I can see if you have people constantly shoving cameras and cell phones in your face it may get to you at times. I don't agree with the notion that just because you are a fan and buy the artist's music and pay to see them in concert that you have a right to photograph and video the artist. When you buy a concert ticket, all that artist owes you is a show worth the price of admission. That's all. I haven't been to a concert in a few years but it was not unusual for a notice to be either printed on the ticket, signs posted or an announcement made at the event regarding restrictions on photography\video\audio recording being prohibited. But in light of current technology that has made it very difficult for venues and artists to enforce. To me this does not justify or make it OK for it to happen.

It's rock n roll. Lighten up. You've clearly sided with the new lineup, which is pretty much the equivalent of Ross and Deen starting a new band and calling themselves Journey. Michael Wilton's song credits are minimal. The post-DeGarmo Queensryche output has been crap, but at least Tate is an original.

Michael Wilton co-wrote a number of early 'Ryche songs like "Warning," "Blinded," "Deliverance," "Roads To Madness," and "Nightrider," and the EP and The Warning, along with O:M, constitute the best of what Queensryche has recorded. He's no mere hanger-on. From O:M, he co-wrote (with Geoff) "Revolution Calling," "Speak," "Spreading The Disease," "The Needle Lies" and "My Empty Room." Except for that last one, those are all ballbusting uptempo songs.

Queensryche was initially Chris's and Michael's band, and they wrote songs and rehearsed for a year to record the songs for the EP while all the other aspiring rock bands of the time in Seattle were partying. Those guys were barely of drinking age when they played in Japan BEFORE The Warning was officially released.

Like I said, really not much of a contributor at all. I don't think the new Todd lineup has the right to call themselves Queensryche. "Revolution Calling" and "Empire" are both great tunes. But Wilton is very much a dispensable hired hand.

To me it is the equivalent of biting the hand that feeds you. This fan was not "in his face" but was doing what fans all over have done for as long as cell phones with cameras have been around. Yeah how dare that fan take a blurry photo of their favorite band to remember a wonderful night? His response to this happy fan? He leaned over and took it. Nice guy.

Co-composer of a number of the band's best songs, and original member = dispensable hired hand? Seriously? Do you think he's a shitty guitarist, too?

In all fairness, even with his amazing voice, the hired hand was actually Geoff. They didn't have a singer to cut the demo so he stepped in, but he was a member of a prog rock band called Babylon. He left Babylon when Queensryche's EP got them noticed. I'd have rather performed before enthusiastic Japanese babes in an arena instead of drunk guys in a smokey Seattle bar, too.

Queensryche used to be awesome, but face it. Geoff's a dick and his voice has gone to shit.

It absolutely was. For as long as it took to get released (4-1/2 years), some of the songs seem unfinished. The magic and the vibe that's present on Empire was gone. The two albums don't even compare.

And to not take your personal property out of your hand and throw it to the crowd. If Tate had a real problem with it, he should have called security.

Also, I don't think that buying a ticket necessarily gives a fan the "right" to take pro pics and video. But, honestly, it was a cell phone. Everyone knows fan-filmed cell phone video sucks anyway...who cares if fans (continue to) do it? It's going to look and sound terrible, but the fan gets a unique souvenir of the show.

I also guarantee he knew what he was doing. Everyone with half a brain knows that cell phones are in every concert hall in the world and people are filming. He knew someone would film him doing this. He knew it would be all over the internet and people would be talking about it (like we are) and it falls right in line with his "tell me how much you hate the album" attitude and promo lately. He's really playing up the "no such thing as bad press" mantra. What Tate did is inexcusable, but it was also intentional.

I definitely understand artists not wanting big pro cameras and video around. This wasn't what the fan was doing. Cell phones can be annoying I agree, even in my job I have to ask parents all the time to please answer my questions while I triage their kid when they're yapping on the phone or texting while I'm assessing their kid, but that doesn't give me the right to grab their phone and throw it. At concerts I personally love watching and listening and absorbing the music with my own eyes and ears in the moment so I hardly have my phone out, but I will take a few pics as a memory of the moment as others have mentioned. And only if there isn't a "no camera" rule. He handled it the worst way and should have just asked for security if he was THAT bothered instead of acting like a 2 year old.

The fan knew what he was doing and took the risk. Some artists are OK with it while others are not. Maybe Tate is not one that is OK with it. He could have handled it differently. But he has a right to how he feels about whom is filming the show.

Fuck yeah. I'm so sick of going to concerts just to see about 50% of the audience watching it through their phones and capturing super grainy shitty video that they'll never watch again (quality might be getting a little better, but still). I wish more artists would do this. The glows from the phones all over the place are annoying as all fuck. Get a concert DVD if you want videos of them in concert.

I'm with Geoff 100% here.

The best and most popular songs were written by DeGarmo and Tate. You listed a bunch of early tracks that no casual fan even cares about. As a hardcore Journey fan, I love "Winds of March" and "Anytime" - should all Journey fans bow down and kiss Fleischman's rumpled ass? Get real.

Yea, and Perry was just some guy that Herbie hired. Man, ur bias is showing. Bad. The whole band was DeGarmo and Tate. The band went to shit without DeGarmo. Under Tate's leadership, it got even worse. Doesn't mean Wilton has any right to it. He's not Mick Jones.
