The maker of Cheerios was actually forced to shut down the YouTube comments on its latest commercial because of the strong racist backlash over the ad’s depiction of an interracial family.

Seriously? It's very odd that this country has not been able to completely move past all of the prejudice of the past. I saw this commercial and while I did take notice of the interracial aspect, all I thought was "cool". I wondered to myself why I even noticed and for me it was just the TV commercial aspect. Obviously if this had of been a family on the street, I wouldn't have given it a single thought. But it dawned on me how you don't see it much in commercials. More lately, but not much.

A white woman and black man fall in love, marry, and have a child. How does anyone have time to even care about that, let alone feel hatred over it? I mean, just the silliness of thinking skin color or even varied backgrounds should affect if two people fall in love and marry is crazy. Wish I could live long enough to be in a time where people didn't care about such things.

I find it disgusting that in the 21st century there are still people out there who have issues with this. On the other hand though, the comments section of a YouTube video isn't exactly a reliable bearing when it comes to judging the opinions of the country as a whole.

If this is the one where the dad wakes up with cheerios on his chest over his heart (cute commercial), I didn't even think about the fact that it's a biracial couple and their daughter. So tired of all the judgmental asses out there who think they have the right to say what a couple or marriage is "supposed" to be.

So who's got problems with this ad and how do we know it is "them" who are the ones with the problem? If this add was with a white guy and a black chick instead would it be the same group of people who have a problem with it?

Let's see, tell me of a modern day American president that is/was married to someone outside of his race. Tell me of a modern day vice president who was married to someone outside his race. Interesting how all these political highest up's within our own Government are only married to their own race, yet..... claim all of "us" need to be more racially diverse.

There are basically two types of racist people, those who memorialize their feelings of racism in emails, forum comments, etc. which I have seen as mostly whites and those who do not memorialize their feelings of racism but express them freely verbally which I have seen as non-whites.

Point is, over the past 20 years I've had hundreds of bosses, managers, etc. preach race equality yet do not and will not marry outside of his/her race. W....T....F!

On top of that, over this same past 20 years, I've been called racist names by co-workers, strangers, etc. and have had to listen to anti-white racist conversations in the workplace and out in the "world" by non-whites. I can't even count how many times I've heard "you know your a redneck when...." joke in the workplace by non-whites. So what race is considered redneck? Anyone?

So now all of a sudden, there are a bunch of people, and no one can confirm what race they are, who are posting negative comments about this stupid fucking ad.

How about this ad below: Just imagine if the races were switched where the good guy was a white guy and all the bad guys were black. Hmmmm..... Why didn't this ad create a stir like this stupid Cheerios ad?

My 22 year old son is biracial. It's never been an issue where I live (Chicago area), but I was a little concerned when he went to the deep South a few years ago on the church mission trip. A child is a gift from God, regardless of what color their skin is. It's disgusting to me that some people are still so narrow minded that they can't see past the exterior to the person on the inside.

Never even paid attention. Just saw a family. How hard is that for folks to see?

Being someone who has traveled and lived north, south, and west I found prejudices are everywhere. Not just the south. Being someone who still lives in the "DEEP SOUTH" I take offense that one would think everyone here is of that mindset...while we are on the subject, we are not all barefoot and have a family tree that runs straight up without branches. Yes prejudice exists here, it existed in Las Vegas when I lived there, and California where my husband lived, it existed in Indiana, Illinois, Germany, Colorado, and many other places I have been. Hate resides in the heart not a place. I happen to love my town. I enjoy the people I know, and I love people regardless of differences of any kind. Most of the people I know don't hate anyone because they are different. It is our differences that make us special and we all have something to contribute to society. Please don't have a regional prejudice either.

So all of these racist people you mention in all these places you've been to, are they all white racists or other?

First of I said some people are racist in those areas...not all. You get in trouble when you generalize and say all of any people think or act a certain way. Racism comes in many forms. Some African Americans hold grudges and hate Koreans. Neo Nazi's live in California around where my husband grew up. I dealt with a rather nasty Skinhead in Las Vegas. You hear people say stupid things in all races. If you think that only white people are racists then you have not talked to a lot of people. Racism is a form of ignorance. You see someone different than you and you dislike them because they are different. Stupid premise. I always equate it to a Red rose disliking a pink rose....they are both ROSES. The pigmentation of ones skin does not make one superior or inferior to anyone else. I have always equated bigotry to sheer ignorance. No. I thought I made that clear. I am sorry for missing what you said at first. I have heard racist remarks from people of different races. Why is that an issue one way or another? It is an individual behavior not a racial behavior.

A few years ago, a black guy yelled out his car window at my wife calling her an "eggroll". Quite interesting coming from one who know what it's like to be called racist names.

I can't even count how many times I've been involved with women throughout my lifetime whose parents/relatives didn't want us to be together because we are different races. When you're in this type of situation, you really find out who is and who is not racist, regardless of what they say about themselves. I've experienced this from primarily black and Latino parents/relatives of women who I've been involved with.

Over the past, say 15 or so years now, I've noticed something very interesting about the American culture. I've noticed that white people are right off the bat labeled racist until they prove that they are not, unlike being innocent until proven guilty. A white person has to do something to prove that they are not racist right off the bat before they can be cleared of being a racist. Many white people go to extremes to prove they're "innocent", even if it means cutting the throats of other whites.

I am sorry you had to put up with that guys stupidity. I have had to get onto black students for calling other students oreo, or other terms because they had a white parent. I don't get racism from anyone really. But I get your point. I really don't care if someone calls me a racist...I would take it that they don't know me well. Usually that is a knee jerk response in the first place.
I am totally turned off by politicians who race bait by calling anyone who disagrees with them as racist. My thoughts on that is if your going to throw around a heated accusation like that you better bring proof to the table. And not disagreeing on policies and actions does not make one a racist. If so then what do you call a person of the same race disagreeing with the same politician? Isn't the premise that if you disagree your a racist? People who would make a blanket statement like that are too stupid to vote for.

I had an African American student who was wanting to date a white girl but her parents did not approve. They broke up over it. I told him I was sorry her parents behaved like that. I would have been proud a wonderful upstanding hard working young man would be interested in my daughter. He was probably one of the few young men that I know you could say that was well raised, kind, smart, and had it going on as far as maturity for a young man. Sad really.

I was pretty lucky as my parents and pretty much my entire immediate family didn't mind me dating around with all races including the black chick I was dating. But... one of two reasons I never did marry my black girlfriend was because she really hated kids and never wanted any. We went to a few parties at friend's homes where there were little kids running around and she would tell me after we left that she was about to put her foot through their head if they bumped into her one more time. This was something I wasn't down with. The criteria for me wanting to get married is to have kids, so the relationship didn't proceed.

I noticed it right away ...you'd have to be blind not to. Does that make someone a racist? I don't think so ...

I thought it was a clever marketing move.... generate lots of talk so more people talk and see it while Cheerios brand gets ten times the publicity than it deserved.

From my experiences, and I'm a white guy with a lot of this experience in dating outside my own race, other races are just as racist against a white guy being involved with a woman of their non-white race just as much as the white race views non-white guys being involved with white women.

They remove it off air to please the people who complained about it... but the word is already out and people will send links of it on youtube and other various forms of media and it's goes viral. They don't need to keep playing the ad on tv as it's already generating enough interest.

I don't think they stopped the ad. Just the comments section on YouTube. No reason to pull the ad.
