Not listening to music much anymore

Postby AR » Sat Jun 29, 2013 5:15 am

I find myself listening to talk radio more and more these days, and much less music. Maybe it's old age? This is especially true at work. Years ago I'd spin CD's all day. Now it's Opie and Anthony in the morning and a lot of sports talk shows - especially local ones. It's been weeks since I've played a song on my iPhone at work.

At home it isn't much better. Usually if I'm "listening" to anything it is a DVD concert of a favorite band. I'll give some new stuff a listen and even if I like it (ex: W.E.T., Black Star Riders, new John Elefante, etc) I rarely play anything continuously over a long period of time like I did even just a few years ago. Basically now, I listen, decide I like something and shelve it away.

I've even cut my outrageous spending on concerts. Usually at this time in the spring, summer season I'd have seen 4 or 5 shows with tickets to 10 more. Now I'm really picking and choosing although this is more out of my refusing to pay the high prices for shows than anything else.

I still love music, but it just isn't as big a part of my life as it once was and I'm not sure why.

Dude, you sounding like a depressed biotch. "I don't know why I'm not listening to music anymore, wahhhhh". You listen when you feel like it mofo. No one listens constantly, there are way to many other things going on. Hell, I love talk radio. Elvis Duran show, Paul & Young Ron, I listen to The Herd sometimes along with Dan Patrick for my sports. Podcast here, Podcast there, fuck, not enough time in a fucking day, not enough days in a year. Pick & chose, Pick & shoot. And I think everyone has cut back on how many concerts they see. Me personally, I have seen most of the best bands when they were young and in their prime. Unless they do something like Leppard did in Las Vegas playing their entire Hysteria album and then some live, I'm not going to hear any band sing the same tired set list night in and night out. Price doesn't play a factor. If Pink Floyd got back together I'm there. I hate that they have gone sky high and real fans like at sporting events get the "Left out Lamont" feeling. It sucks and the only thing that we can do as consumers is not go. I refuse to go to any sporting event and haven't for a long time. Athlete's, like actors are highly overcompensated.

I do most of my music listening on the road, or when I'm doing my Internet things. Not so much at home anymore, but it's mostly because I have a (very tired) stereo system that's in desperate need of an upgrade.

Not depressed at all. Happiest fucker in the world. Just wondering if anyone else is going through the same thing.

Leppard did the right thing in Vegas. If they would tour with those setlists I'd actually go. But "Make Love Like A Man" being played will require me shooting Joe Elliott in the head. 8)

LOL! Hey, it's a tongue in cheek song. Like Kiss's Lick it up, you either love it or hate it. I love both these bands and am grateful that they still put out new music. Some of it is great like "Freak" off of Kiss's latest "Monster", and some just filler. It's just sad that they think people want to hear either "Rock n Roll all night" or "Pour some sugar on me" night in and out. I can't wrap my head around that way of thinking.

I find myself more and more enjoying the hell out of certain podcasts at any time of the day, especially discussing a topic I'm most interested in. Hell, even YouTube has their certain perks and channels just from fans offering their opinions on subjects and it's entertaining as hell. Some years ago at work, we'd never miss one episode of Howard Stern on Sirius Radio and the listen felt apart of your daily routine.

Music is one thing, but it's good to expand the mind and actually listen to other peoples opinions on subject matters, whatever that may be because it opens up the creative side of things for your mind to expand on. Music hits a different stroke for different folks and is basically used, for me, as a feel-good mental stroke of emotion if I'm feeling a certain way but I'm more and more interested in podcasts than anything nowadays.

I was just thinking about this exact subject a few days ago. I was looking for a particular CD in my library of about 500 or so and as I scanned through them, I reflected on how much I was into music and how many hours of any given day there would be music playing on one of my stereo systems or computers somewhere in the house. And, just like you, the only time I find myself purposely putting something on to play these days, it's usually a concert DVD.
I don't think music has lost its meaning in our lives or that we have found it less important. I'm just as passionate about the bands whose music has played a part in my life somehow and still appreciate the same songs for the respective reasons. And yup, I listen to talk radio more than music when I'm in the car. No Surprize hit the nail on the head... We're older and have more shit going on and more responsibilities. Add to that the fact that we're more concerned about local and national events than we were when we were younger - news-makers matter more to us now.
I wouldn't say I got depressed as I thought about the situation, more like puzzled at how my interests and preferences have shifted as I've matured.
A while back there was a comedian who was talking about the changes we make and the choices we make as we get older. One of bits was, "How do you know you've reached middle-age? One of the presets on your stereo is an Oldies station!

I just purchased this a few minutes ago on iTunes. I've only gotten through the first song so far, the one with Rich Williams and David Ragdsdale from Kansas. Great tune.

I am always listening to music when I can. I go through phases of what I listen to. But I do get bored frequently with everything. i find myself texting friends saying, "Tell me what to listen to - give me something new". I've also been thinking a lot about all the albums I was into as a kid and into my 20's or 30's and listened to over and over that and that I know find difficult to enjoy.

It's almost like something was great and then something better came along and it reduced the power of the previous one.

I used to listen to Styx, REO, Foreigner, etc endlessly and now almost none of their stuff appeals to me. I find that strange. I can listen and when the iPod is on Random I enjoy the melodies in the background while I am working. But I no longer listen to them to listen.
