Anyone else sick of this yet?

Unless you lack access to the internet, you’ve certainly seen the viral onslaught of Ice Bucket Challenge videos in the past few weeks. The idea is to dump a bucket of ice water over your head and “nominate” others to do the same, as a way of promoting awareness about ALS (a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s disease). If you don’t accept the challenge, you have to donate $100 to an ALS association of your choice. It’s like a game of Would-You-Rather involving the entire internet where, appallingly, most Americans would rather dump ice water on their head than donate to charity.

There are a lot of things wrong with the Ice Bucket Challenge, but most the annoying is that it's basically narcissism masked as altruism. By the time the summer heat cools off and ice water no longer feels refreshing, people will have completely forgotten about ALS. It’s trendy to pretend that we care, but eventually, those trends fade away.

This is the crux of millennial “hashtag activism,” where instead of actually doing something, you can just pretend like you’re doing something by posting things all over your Facebook. Like the Ice Bucket Challenge, good causes end up being a collective of social media naval gazing. We reflected on our favorite social-movements-gone-viral and found out what happened to them after the fell off our Twitter feeds. Because, yes, social problems continue even after you stop hashtagging them.

The more telling question regarding this awareness tribute is the amount of money donated the past few weeks because of this attempt to bring awareness. If numbers spiked, I can see the point. If not, it's just another bandwagon stunt across social media.

All these fucking social media whores are dumping ice water over their heads looking for donations instead of donating. Trendy douchie bullshit.

The smart money is to pay to go to a dinner featuring beef and beer and former Baltimore Stallions (CFL) and Ravens players with the proceeds going to ALS. (horrible, scary disease - never questioned that)

So I get to eat and drink beer and actually put my money where my mouth is while idiots dump cold water on their heads.

It is sort of annoying because it seems like people are looking to pat themselves on the back and have others pat them on the back. That's one thing I don't like about publicizing how charitable you are. On the other hand, I've been reading that most of those taking the challenge actually also contribute.

I've got nominated like 4 times so I took the challenge and donated a nice sum ontop of it. Whoever dumps the ice, support the cause and donate.

I think most celebrities are doing the challenge and also donating.

The Viral Ice Bucket Challenge Has Raised $12 Million For ALS

The extremely viral ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has led to record donations to the ALS Association, whose national office reports nearly $12 million in collected donations since July 29–$15.6 million if you include money raised by ALS affiliates across the country–compared with less than $50,000 in the same period last year.

My bro also made it a point that dousing yourself with ice water causes your veins to contract, making it more difficult for your heart to pump blood. This could prove fatal to anyone with heart disease, or those whose families have a history of heart disease, as this can lead to cardiac arrest.

Where the hell is all this donation money going anyway? It's time to stop being 'aware' of diseases and start going towards 'curing' them.

My understanding is take the challenge and donate $10 or don't take the challenge and donate $100-either way you're supposed to donate. As someone else mentioned, more money has been raised for ALS in the past month than in the last several years combined. I was initially skeptical until I started hearing the numbers, now I think it's a great thing.

If anyone wants to donate to the ALS cause, I'd recommend not donating to the same charity most everyone's donations are going to and try donating directly to an ALS patient, like Jason Becker.

Well, FF, is there ANYTHING that you don't steal off the internet? All news and opinions from you are second hand.
