I do think that Mercury was a great singer. But at the same time I think that he was a bit overrated too. Michael Jordan was definitely one of the best basketball players ever. But he wasn't the god that he was portrayed as by the media and fans. And I think that the same is true of Mercury as a singer. Excellent, yes. But not the best ever. In fact not even top 5.

thanks for the post. not always the fan of the over the top Queen songs, but Freddie had the voice AND the songwriting talent.
He owned the crowd at Live Aid. Great seeing 100,000s singing their songs that day.

For me, the best he sang was near the end of his life. I always wonder how much more we would have gotten from him had he lived a lot longer. I don't "miss" many entertainers. He's one I do.
