Diabetic Dog

Any of you ever have a diabetic dog?

If so, do you have any advice when it comes to what to feed a diabetic dog, or any health related supplements to give a diabetic dog?

My brothers 8 year old dog was just diagnosed with diabetes a few days ago. His blood sugar was in the 800's.

My old Pug Lucy was diagnosed with diabetes at age 8 (3 and a half years ago) as well. She went in to have this little growth removed from her eye and that's when we found out, her blood sugar was through the roof!

Unfortunately, she passed away last year after her battle. On the up side, she lived 2 and a half years after diagnosis. She was put on insulin and had to go get regular glucose tests for the day at her vet. That would help determine the units we would give her, etc.

Now for food, she was put on a certain kind of food prescribed by the vet. Her weight went from 29lbs to around 18 within 2 years. There was a weight loss food, as well as a maintaining weight kind of food.

My advice, don't ever give up on the dog. We put her down not because of the diabetes, but her quality of life had gone down big time. She went blind within a year, and she would get growths on her feet from time to time. She had a couple of strokes too.

All I can say is good luck and you'll do great!
