I know nothing is concrete yet, but Andrew's own news section (Sat 20th Dec) hints at the next album may be a greatest hits Vol II with some new stuff. In my opinion this is the safe option.
Surely the way to go would be to release a kick ass full blown album with all new material. About a month ago Andrew had the link to the telephone conversation between a radio station and Eddie himself. I clearly remember Eddie letting on he had been busy and had 4 years of material. I just want new stuff, the more the better!

If I had my way they would release a new album of 'back to roots' sort of music. Songs that were raw energy like the early stuff and would showcase Ed's guitar playing....no keyboards allowed on this one.

Brand new album - they can always fall back on the GH II thing if it falls over.

But I'd rush out and throw down my cash for GH VolII just for those three or whatever number new songs as I did when VolI came out. No doubt the band execs know this too and therefore VolII is indeed the safest option. But **** it, if Ed has the material then he should just crank out a full album!

Mind you, after VH III, if there is a new album, it will be a 'listen first before buying' affair for me!!

Thats why they may see the 'greatest hits II' the safe option, Van Halen III did do some damage to their reputation. Saying that, I still want a new album.

My vote is for a brand new album... although I have the sneaking suspicion they're going to go with Greatest Hits II. That'll be a shame especially since this band is long overdue for putting out original material. I agree with WardyS3 - if Eddie has a plethora of songs that he's saved up over the years since the last album, why not give the fans what they want? Granted, it's been so freakin' long since we've gotten anything from the boys, most of us are willing to shell out our hard earned money for the few new songs attached to a Greatest Hits package. Aren't record companies wonderful? (he asked sarcastically) My ultimate question is this, what songs would be included on Greatest Hits II that they didn't put on the first one? Van Halen has always been a band whose success has come from it's albums, not the singles released from the albums. With that in mind, do they really have enough songs to put together another volume of "Greatest Hits"?

OK, this really pissed me off when I heard there was a 'new' GH already

I asumed they would make at least 3 or 4 new CD's nad then release GH 2

So either they held back some of what they consider their best songs, or they are using what they consider second rate ones.

Either way, it is a grab for $$$

It would (will?) be a unique compiliation considering the songs on the CD will cover all three singers. Of course I am assuming they will include the Cherone collaboration "Without You" on this one as it was released as a single. If so, I can't think of any other greatest hits package where 3 (or more) lead singers are showcased.

While I would enjoy a new album, I believe that Gh vol.II is safer from the industry point of view and what is going to actually happen first. III was so bad that when a local Sun-TV (like a smaller Best Buy) shut down back in 1999, they actually gave out copies of it FREE w/ purchase - unfortunately, the price was too high on that one!!
There were many glaring omittions on the 1st gh - like (Oh!) Pretty Woman, Beautiful Girls, (Don't Tell Me) What Love Can Do, Not Enough, Mine All Mine, Top Of The World, Finish What Ya Started, Hot For Teacher, Best Of Both Worlds, I'll Wait, Everybody Wants Some!!, and You Really Got Me come jumping out real hard at me!! - HEY - let me design the gh package, damn it!! The 2nd one should kick ass of the old tunes and still leave room for 3-4 new songs (like an ep)!!

I think it's crazy the way some fans think Eddie is going to be the same person who recorded & released those first six important & influential VH albums again since that's almost a million years ago even though the VH/DLR era of the band will always be timeless. A greatest hits complilation to coincide with the rumored Van Halen/Sammy Hagar reunion is more realistic for this legendary rock band since most of the young people of today don't know who they are while this greatest hits album is a good introduction.

I see your point Wayne, but I'm a fan of Roth and the Hagar Van Halen. Another Greatest Hits is now looking like what they are going to go with (Judging by all the rumours everywhere) but I feel Eddie has still some great Riffs left in him. But like I said before I feel the Greatest Hits II is the safe option. Maybe the record execs wouldn't consider a new album because of the poorly recieved Cherone fronted album. Maybe Eddie wouldn't neither. Now i'm thinking to myself what songs would be on the next Hits release that wasn't on the first.

I don't think I said Eddie Van Halen couldn't play anymore of his classic riffs since he is one of the last great guitarist in rock & roll joining other legendary rock guitarists before him like Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck & Jimmy Page even though he isn't as young as he used to be Mr. Rock. I think Eddie & Sammy compliment each other well onstage as the classic VH concert video Live Without A Net proves without a doubt but the VH/DLR era will always be my favorite since it had a huge impact on my life during my youth at the time. I'm looking forward to the possible Van Halen/Sammy Hagar reunion even though it's more like a Paul McCartney & Wings reunion than a Beatles because old VH fans like myself would like to see Eddie & Dave onstage one more time but this reunion tour is all about the return of Eddie after a long absence from the spotlight.

It looks like we've got our wires crossed Wayne. I was agreeing with you about the fact its crazy that people think Eddie is the same man that played on the early albums, times/people change. The point I was trying to make, perhaps not clearly, is that I feel he still has it in him to conjur up new riffs which will be considered classic in time.

Without a doubt some people will never be satisfied because they will always compare it to the early V/H era. But what the hell, I forgive him for Van Halen III and look forward to the next release. When its released!

I apologize to you for taking what you said the wrong way concerning Eddie Van Halen since I think he can still come up with some great riffs despite not being the same person he once was during the important & influential days of the VH/DLR era Mr. Rock.
