Very good match here. By a hair, I give it to HB.

Humans Being rocks, even with all the shit that went on during the 'recording' of the song, it still came out well

Yep, Humans Being, the best Halen tune since the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album. Had me itchin for the next Van Halen album (expecting it to feature Sammy again) but alas it was not meant to be!

Gonna go the other way here and say 'Me Wise Magic' - bearing in mind my Van Hagar collection gets more airplay than my VH Dave collection.....it had all the elements VH used to have like OTT lyrics, great guitar work, and a kind of 'looseness' that I always associated with early VH. And even though I prefer Sammy as a singer, I thought Dave was in great voice on this track!!
So 'Me Wise Magic' for me!!

I agree with Kenny here. I love the offset rhythm in the song. This does NOT discount HB. It's noted on other takes here that I'm a fan of Sammy over Dave, but this is an exception to that rule.

Humans Being

Humans Being is a clear winner in my opinion. I thought VH had really nailed it with this song and like WardyS3 I was itching to hear the next Hagar VH album, only to be disappointed.
The Roth songs on the Best Of package are good, but HB really rocks in the VH style of old.

Humans Being rocks in the style of old?? I think it had a Balance feel to it. Me Wise Magic had more of the older VH style to it. Lack of real structure, dips and dives, and Dave's typical lyrics. Humans Being has the energy of a "Twister", the movie the song was released for. More of a harder, modern sound. I really like both, not one over the other. They were the last good releases VH has put out, much better than anything on VHIII.

Recently dragged up a couple of net interviews on the split between Eddie and Sammy back in 96, which indludes comments by both of them regarding sessions for Humans Being.

Ed says one thing Sam says another, and after reading them I'm amazed Humans Being was as good as it was.

Interestingly they also tak about a rather 'Classic' ballad also written for the Twister soundtrack called 'Between us two' and both Fairbain and Glen Ballard were allegedly quoted as pitching it as one of the BEST VH songs written. But yet again, disagreements between Sammy and Eddie ensured and sadly this one didn't even make the light of day.

Anyhow, Andrew, if you read this, did the ballad get leaked or changed to another song? Be damn good to hear it.

For the interview with Eddie go to:
http://www.guitarmag.com/issues/9701/vanhalen.html

For Sams interview go to http://www.vhlinks.com/pages/interviews/ (Select Sammy Hagar, interview, Ain't talkin bout love 97.)

But be warned, makes you wish you hadn't read em, cause it takes away from the classic Humans Being somewhat once you know its background.

Actually, Blue eyed Murder, I think I read somewhere that Dave didn't write the lyrics to 'Me wise magic' though they sure sound like his lyrics!

Still my choice though, whether he wrote 'em or not. Can anyone confirm?

Humans Being proves exactly what was wrong with Van Hagar all along. It's better than any other Van Hagar song, and the reasons why are obvious: It was the last Van Hagar song recorded, during a session Sammy didn't want to be at, with the Danniels manipulated tension between him and Eddie at it's peak. The result: the best music that otherwise neutered band was capable of making. Sure there were a few notable exceptions, such as Judgment Day, and the songs that DAVE WROTE on 5150, but for the most part, Van Hagar was too "happy" and the music sufferred for it.

Me Wise Magic - the first new Van HALEN song in over a decade and great enough to make you forget everything in the previous 11 years. The resulting album would have rivalled Fair Warning.... had Eddie faced reality and listened to the fans, not Danniels.

For someone who hated Van Hagar so much, you sure like to post about it.
I preher Sammy to Dave, but I respect what Dave did with VH.
You make it sound like Sammy sucker punched you one night, then kicked you in the head when you were on the floor.

For the record, Dave wrote the lyrics to Me Wise Magic. But i have to go with Humans Being here cuz it was the rocking Vh of old and the solo kicked ass.Whereas,I thought Me Wise Magic was damned good too. The song "Between Us Two" is an awesome song.I heard it on an MP3 that i dl'd but lost it when my hard drive crashed. It was an awesome song and we might see it on the supposed box set Warner Bros was thinking of putting out.

I Like em' both, but "Humans Being" has THE killer riff, 2nd to "Ain't talkin 'bout love" in my opinion. Come to think of it I've probably played HB the most.

Both are great but I got to go with Me Wise Magic. It was great having Dave back for a moment. Plus Dave and Michael sound great together.

Gotta give that to H.B. - I realize that there are the die-hard Roth fans out there who will crucify each other to defend him, but overall, I think that Van Hagar had a better "musical" sound than did Van Halen.

Ford - You've Lost It!

Actually - Ford is correct. Being a Van Halen fan, I've actually gone out and done some research on this....He wrote some lyrics for some of the songs on 5150 - but none of them were used. The band already had a lot of songs written (without lryics when Sammycame on board) so all Sammy did was write new lyrics for them. Yes, Roth had a part in 5150 - No, the world never saw the results. Can't We All Just Get Along!?

Just curious GI...You said you did some research on this??So did you just call up the guys and ask??They were probobly over at my house that day in my studio...LOL

Not quite, but thanks for asking - I do, however, have contact with Michael Anthony thru his website, and I also have contact with the person who runs Van-Halen dot com, and it's a topic that has been discussed before. Why is it that it seems you're out to pick a fight with everyone who posts?

Not out to pick a fight with anyone, its just everyone on the net knows FORD know nothing about anything, and I also have contact with someone is the VH camp, and apperently the only tune Dave had ANY input on was Good Enough, I mean its a know brainer, if you listen to the songs it dosen't take a genius to hear Sammy's stamp all over that record, Why Can't this be Love,Dreams,Summernights, Best of Both Worlds, Love walks in, 5150...Its right there..

PostPosted: Sun Feb 02, 2003 1:15 pm
by grandillusion
Hence - why I said - none of them were used - According to Michael Anthony, there were 5 or 6 songs that were written with Roth - but weren't ever used - dropped because of the fact that hagar came in and they just werent his style.

I ove HB but it doesnt come close to being as good as MWM!!!!!!

was I excited or though HB was unbelieveable when it came out ???? NO!

was I with MWM.....oh yes!!!!!!!

ed had the fire again, and the two showed why they are legends!

come on this is a one sided win in my opinion.

how magical was it to hear DLR & Ed again , but not only that but with a slammin song !!!!!!

Just have to give this one to Me Wise Magic because it rocks and its the original VH .This song when I first heard it it was like dam this song f**kin kicks ass. It was the VH I grew up with and rocked out to. Its too bad they couldnt work things out because I believe they wouldve put out another fantasic album. Much better than VH3 thats for sure and any Van Hagar album. HB is a real good song, one of their best with Hagar, this song represents the kinda of rockin I expected from them with Hagar when he first joined the band but they always went a little different direction when it came to recording. The F.U.C.K. album came close but still couldnt touch what they had recorded with Roth. later

Humans Being & Me Wise Magic are great rock songs in their own right which are better than the whole Bon Jovi catalogue, while my favorite song would have to be MWM because it proved Eddie & Dave could still rock like it was yesterday despite personal & professional differences.
