Van Halen - David Lee Roth = Van Hagar

Face it. Van Halen were the Kings of Rock and Roll with David Lee Roth as lead singer. Van Halen's albums are far superior with David Lee Roth as lead singer compared to boring Sammy Hagar.

I wish Van Halen never broke up and David Lee Roth was the lead singer. Don't expect Van Halen to be together after this tour. It's over for them!!!

I'm posting my opinion, and I am grown up! Just because you disagree my opinion don't try to discredit me.

Van Halen sucks without David Lee Roth!

I fully agree.
What would happen if I went to the little dark Journey corner and started a thread called "Journey - Steve Perry = shit" or "Journey with Steve Perry sucks" or something?
Stop spreading poison all over the board man!!

Van Hagar

I love early Van Halen with David Lee Roth, but let's face it today Sammy Hagar is the man. I love Sammy and his solo stuff and I just hope Eddie, Alex and Anthony can keep up with him. Marching to Mars, Ten 13 and Not 4 Sale were strong solo albums. Sammy has been putting on one hell of a live show solo lately at the age of 57 years. What a trooper! What has Roth done lately? Nothing, exactly! Roth was great in his time but seriously, Hagar is the guy for Van Halen now. The rest of Van Halen should be so lucky. I really hope Sammy and the boys come up to Vancouver for a show.

Cheers, I am Canadian!

Each to their own. Everyon'es entitled to their opinion.

I would loved to have had a Roth re-union too, but if I was forced to pick only one, I'd go for Van Hagar, it's what I grew up with, I like Sammy's vocals better and think he's more capable of taking the Van Halen product that extra step.

It's all cool!

Then do it Kenny. I could care less.

I'm not spreading poison. Instead, I am giving an opinion on how crappy Van Hagar is. If Van Halen started in 1985 without their first six albums and David Lee Roth as their singer, then their post Roth music would be even worse. All Sammy Hagar knows how to do is make drinks.

Van Hagar starting with 5150 blows. The fake and expensive reunion tour is overpriced and not meeting the expectations of their fans.

I'll take Van Halen with David Lee Roth anyday over synth-pop Van Hagar. Van Halen minus David Lee Roth = Van Hagar.

Get use to it.

I think actual Van Halen fans will decide that for themselves mate.
If you don't like VH, fine - I'm very confident us poor ripped off VH fans will live with the disappointment. 8)

Overpriced, I agree. But as far as I know they have not played a concert yet. So I dont think anybody knows yet. I do know however that Roth lacks in the singing area severly, I have heard it live. Sammy sings well, very well live, and when I have seen an off night he doesnt try to do something he cant pull off.

Ah bother, don't like to keep on with these things but one thing I gotta add..

Synth pop Hagar?

I don't believe this has anything to do with choice of singer. Need I remind us of 1984? 'I'll wait', 'Jump', the list goes on. Ain't that synth pop? And behold, ain't that Roth singing? Think it's pretty obvious Ed was pushing for the direction. And while I'm on it, check out Roth's solo albums. Full of synth! Take the opening to 'Just like Paradise'.

Personally I think synth was a natural progression into the 80's and all parties were happy for it. Don't shoot me! Just an observation, an 'opinion'. (Seems to be an increasingly dirty word 'opinion'!) lol.

And on a final note, let's not begrudge Hagar for taking Roth's place. From what I've read (and I accept you can't believe all you read), in my 'OPINION' it was Roth's choice to 'leave' Van Halen, and surely no one would expect Ed and the remainder of the gang to call it quits just because of a singer leaving??? (I heard they had to fight to maintain the Van Halen name for the release of 5150?). More often than not a replacement singer will take a band to greater heights anyway, as was with Bruce and Maiden, and arguably Coverdale and Purple (maybe not greater heights on this occassion, but a healthy continuation perhaps? For a little while?). The list goes on.

But I DO respect your opinion JT, this ones just food for thought!?
Personally I just wish ROTH would release something decent!

SAMMY!

Sammy is harder working at promoting his beverage companies.

David Lee Roth at his best was much better than boring Sammy Hagar at his best.

The first six Van Halen albums are their best!

Hard working:
Sammy has 4 excellent solo CD's in the last 7 years.
How many does Roth have?

Roth is a lounge act, while Sammy is leading VH on a summer tour. Driving you nuts....isn't troll?

I've always liked Sammy Hagar better than David Lee Roth. I do love early Van Halen but I just like Sammy's voice and stage presence better.

Gimme a review of DLRs current single versus Van Hagars?

I just don't get why you tools dig Dave. HE'S the gay one! He's the one with the Vegas show! You wouldn't catch Sammy near that crap!

Sammy's the one with the kick-ass chill club in Cabo. He's the party man. He's about partying and showing everyone else a good time. Diamond Dave is just concerned about his damn self! You people don't fit in to that.

Sammy's the one who brings folks on stage for an entire concert. Boozes them up and even passes around a bone. Now that rocks! Unlike Dave who just brings up titty girls for his own fondeling pleasure.

Dave is an entertainer - entertaining only himself. Sammy is a musician. He's serious about his music and cares about his fans.

Dave doesn't even know the lyrics anymore. He just wants to yelp and flaunt his baggy, bald body. You people don't really dig Dave, you dig the old stuff. It's Edward's writing that has changed. Just wait till you hear Sammy doin early VH. That's how it's supposed to sound!

I just saw the show last night and it ROCKED - HARD! Dave was not missed and would not have been able to keep up!

Everyone has there own opinion on different things. If everyone felt the same way about things the world would be pretty damn boring.

I like all the eras of VH (including Cherone). I think the Roth/Hagar has been argued to no avail for what seems like ever. IMO DLR wrote better songs but had worse album content. Diver Down, Fair Warning, WACF were examples of this. Hagar's songs are a lil weaker than DLR's but his albums are more complete and well better song for song. With the exception of the debut album and most parts of 1984 the albums had a lot of fluff. With Sammy every album with the exception of Balance had very little fluff.

I saw Van Hagar this year at Hershey and it was the only concert I've been to that I've saw what seemed to be everyone on their feet for the ENTIRE show! So my vote on lead singers goes to Sammy.

Let the rambling begin:

It's two different bands. Come on. Eddie's guitar doesn't even sound like it did on the first three or four albums. I love them both. I wish they would have toured with both of them. Especially with another Best of covering both era's. They chose Sammy and I'm happy. But if I HAD to choose. It would the Dave era. It was my youth. Too many memories associated with those albums. It was like one big party where everyone got laid. When Sammy came on it was different. The song writing was more serious. With Dave it was like a great one night stand. Sammy was more like a good relationship. They were able to explore musical possiblities that they couldn't do with Dave because lets face it, Sammy is the better singer. I would hope that Eddie would stop whining about Dave and give the fans a chance to hear those tunes again with the proper singer someday. And I don't care if he can't sing. Come to think of it, Dave never could sing live. It just works with that material. Sammy singing Dave tunes is cool but I'd rather hear more Sammy stuff. And I would NEVER want to hear Dave attempt a Sammy song. So when it comes down to who I'd like to see fronting Halen it would be Dave, I s guess. More for nostalgic reasons I guess. Sammy is awesome. I love his solo stuff. I have no problem with his solo career at all. Have all his albums and he's definitely one of the greats. Dave's solo career on the hand...

Well, he had a couple good one's. I wish Steve Vai would help the guy out one more time.

Make any sense?? Probably not.

Okay I agree - the early VH stuff holds different memories than the later Sammy stuff. But I was different during each of those eras too. I'd like to think that Van Halen matured with me (or vice versa).

[And I don't care if he can't sing. Come to think of it, Dave never could sing live. ] GOTTA LOVE THAT!

But if that's the case (that Dave can't sing), why would you want to spend a lot of money to see the show, just to have it ruined by Dave! Just put on the old album. I hate the way Dave wants the show to be about him. Let Vegas keep him - it's much better suited for him![/list]

Because it's Dave. And his voice still works with the old Halen material. I don't think he would ruin the show. I never seen him "ruin" a show. I've seen him when his voice was horrible and when his voice wasn't bad. The nights where his voice wasn't bad just needed Eddie, Alex and Mike behind him. And it could've been golden. The nights where his voice was horrible he usually makes up for it by putting on an energetic show, which is entertaining in it's own right. He's still got something left in him. Plus he's a funny guy. You get great tunes and comic relief for the price of one. I'd take the chance and spend the cash to hear stuff like And The Cradle Will Rock or So This Is Love? again. Dave is the only one keeping those songs alive. It's too bad he's not doing it with Van Halen.

Well Dave during the Sans Halen tour was a big disappointment for me. He was so off that you couldn't tell what song he was pretending to sing. I agree that Dave is an entertainer. But he should be doing stand-up not fronting a rock band.

I like to see a band do the music that I know and can feel like I'm a part of it. Dave goes too off the deep-end with impromtu crap. I just feel that Dave's in it for himself and his own enjoyment. I don't need to pay to see that.

Dude, I am a huge Journey guy, and you are disgracing our goodwill to VH. VH is awesome with or without DLR or Sammy. I do think it's hit what Eddie did to SoulSirkus but hey.......
Anyway, stop with your little "trolling" and being a complete ass.....

VH did great with Sammy
Journey did great with Augeri

What is your point?

Do you want to get Journey w/Perry and VH/DLR and have a double bill? Well, actually there wouldn't be a venue big enough for that!

I said I wouldnt go, BUT I had a chance to go at Indy for 25.00 so I went.It was a good show, Ed got lost a few times. Sammy sounded great!!But the set list is still very weak on old stuff. Somebody get me a doctor was the only "new" old song I heard. Mike sang it and sounded damn good too. Ed did have the flu bad so I guess thats why he kinda got a little off a time or three. He wasnt bad, its just that it is Eddie V.H., although you know what I have to say about his playin in other post.

I think its clear to most that Sammy has the better voice out of the two, but for me the Roth era was the better.

Roth doesn't have the greatest voice, but he has a good one and brought a whole lot more to the table than a great voice. He was arguably one of rock's great frontmen and was an untouchable entertainer on the live stage.

Roth was as much Van Halen (if not more) than the Van Halen brothers themselves. These days VH, as good as they are, just fall in the category of just another rock band, but pre 1985 they stood out as the best.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing Hagar here...I'm a Van Halen fan, just putting my penny's worth forward!!!

You are possibly the most level headed Roth fan ever.

Personally I've always preferred Sammy.
But it was never a question of who should reunite with VH.

People can argue all they like about which era was better, but for the future, the choice was/is clear....

I agree with CTS on this comment, however, it could be more to do with the age you were when Roth was at the helm, or the fact that you were younger and free of responsibilty, or whatever.......Eddie was certainly more 'cutting edge' during the Roth era, IMO.
