I have not been able to find any info on the number of adds TPIYH received. That means it is not in the top 30 ADDS to radio. Not showing well yet...

KABOOM?
Try again.
"Generations" landed with all the cultural impact of a gently falling leaf.
If anything, it's advent was an unceremonious, unheralded THUD.

I am suprised we are even debating chart-rankings and the like.
Folks, look, in order to sell units, u need something called promotion.
This album had zero of it.
I am suprised that people here are suprised that it made such little impact whatsoever.

No one here is expecting it to miraculously take the country by storm, are they? Maybe they would get airplay if they put out a covers CD like Rush and Styx...

Did Rush get airplay out of their covers album? I can't recall.
Regardless, I don't want Journey doing a full album of covers.

It is not placing on any chart on any site.....

Very dissapointing

At least Higher Place showed up.

I'm not surprised it isn't doing well...I'm surprised it is doing nothing

On a bright note, there are plenty of copies of the album available at every store....

It may not be charting, but it's ON, that's the more important thing.
it's being played. I wouldn't have expected it to make one of those bullshit charts. Motley Crue AC? Gimme a fucking breatk. Those charts....

"Higher Place" at least had a scintilla of promo. behind it.
Journey did a nation-wide live radio broadcast thingy, along with the notoriously mangled CBS live morning show appearance.

Details, please.....

Hmmmm....the same thing happened to Steve back in '84...."Live at Five with Sue Simmons"....she basically said, "let's go to the videotape" to see the new "Oh Sherrie" video...

....And "Faithfully" played instead!!

Talk about a FORCED SMILE on Steve's face.....thought all his teeth would smash from the amount of clench....

Nora, the CBS Morning Show was a poor representation of Steve Augeri. Journey had played the night before in Pennsylvania or Ohio or somewher. They had to travel all night and perform very early in the morning. Add to that the report that Steve had been ill and you have all the ingredients to a bad performance.

I've seen that Nora, it was a bad moment for Steve, but he pulled it off like a pro.

I didn't see the CBS thing with the current band, but at the time I think they blamed it on sound problems. If Augeri was having voice problems because of the circumstances they should have said so. That could happen to any singer on an early morning gig.

No, they blamed it on him being sick. It wasn't until later that they mentioned the show the night before and the travel and the early gig.

I never heard the band mention the official store-wide release of this album while on tour. They passed cds out at shows, yes, but in what way does that promote the official copy shipped to stores shelves?
It doesn't.

This conversation is really a bit superfluous. The timing of the release of both the album and the singles and how they dealt with radio tells me that they didn't even consider the thought of how to get it airplay, or how to promote it to the general public. If they wanted that stuff, they would have done a traditional release - release the album and single before the tour and tour behind it...and send it to radio. That didn't happen and they are not going to capitalize on things by caring about it after the fact.

No single will chart.
No single will get significant airplay.
The album won't chart.
The album will sell less the any other Journey album in history...if you don't count the concert CD's.

That is just the way it is going to be...everybody should have known this months ago.

I hate to say it, but the band has no one to blame but themselves for the lack of promotion....
Christ, I saw television commercials promoting the Barbara Streisand/Barry Gibb cd!!!!
I know they're all into making music, but if they don't promote it, who's going to even KNOW it's out there to listen to????

Bingo! You would think with all the work the band puts into making a cd and touring, they'd promote the new release beyond their own website. It just makes absolutely no sense to me.

Well, they have been playing songs from the new album on tour. That's promotion. And not everybody who saw the tour got the free CD, because of some stupid regional reasons. And there are some big differences betwen the sleeve giveaway and the actual CD: liner notes, different tracklist, photographs, jewel box. Some people, like myself, want the whole package, not just the giveaway.

All I'm saying is, you saying there was ZERO promotion is ludicrous. Anything out there, whether a new Perry DVD, a radio commercial for the tour, a DJ talking about the tour, a review in a paper... a message board disagreement.... it's ALL PROMOTION for ANY PRODUCT the band puts out.

They didn't preface those songs by saying, the album will hit stores shortly. The majority people who got a copy at the shows thought that was it. They had no way of knowing (outside of discovering on their own via the web) that a more-official version was set to hit stores.

Fernando Ramirez wrote: And not everybody who saw the tour got the free CD, because of some stupid regional reasons.

So? How were they supposed to know it was in stores? It wasn't explicity stated.

Fernando Ramirez wrote:And there are some big differences betwen the sleeve giveaway and the actual CD: liner notes, different tracklist, photographs, jewel box. Some people, like myself, want the whole package, not just the giveaway.

Yeah, but how did the casual masses know that an official copy of the cd was even going to be released?

Fernando Ramirez wrote:All I'm saying is, you saying there was ZERO promotion is ludicrous.

The Generations cd has less promotion than Arrival. I don't think that's ludicrous. I think that is a pretty honest assement.

Resting on one's laurels is not the way to go about promoting a specific product.

I am with you on that. And from what I have been told, the official release DOES sound better than the concert version. (I don't call it a giveaway because we 'supposedly' paid for it within the ticket price.)

I never thought of that.
WE are a promotion. Except for when TNC and Deano get wound up, maybe we have a chance to reach people about "Generations". Maybe we better be more careful...

I do think we are being too judgmental (prematurely). There are many avenues of promotion. For the lucky patrons who went to the concerts and received the Generations CD it was one of the first stages of promotion. Some of those CD's were air played on "campus" radio stations. Albeit, wattage being low but promoted. Some are finding their niche' in (selected) local stations. Most of all marketing is effective from the fan-base. The Street Team and word of mouth financially costs nada. The first stage of recognition in sales will be the true fan-base. You take a head-count and demography of those sales. Assess weak areas and then start working ($) on promotion in those markets. You may see another Journey (Perry) jingle on TV in use for a kick-off?
