How Much Longer?

Postby Greg » Wed Oct 12, 2005 10:36 am

How much longer do you guys think Journey will continue to tour and release new stuff? My favorite band, Kansas (sorry but Journey is a close close second) doesn't appear to be releasing anymore albums since their last, but continues to tour quite strong in supporting their cataloge. Do you guys, truthfully, see Journey keeping the wheel in the sky turning or do you guys think side bands and projects (Soul Sirkus) will eventually cut into Journey? Hey if the Rolling Stones can release an album....Journey shouldn't have a problem in the future! :)

Considering this album came about largely by accident and by coercion by management, I am not very optimistic about their future.

This is spam.
First you subverted Greggie's TBF thread and now you are adulterating this one.
Some of us are actually trying to discuss Journey here.
Go away.

I wish I had a nickel for all the times that Rush used the word subvert. You're on a roll.

As an avid political junkie, I actually listen to alot of political talk radio. Both liberal AND conservative.
I've never noticed Rush to excessively use the term subvert.
You're full of it.

Again I ask, why do you feel the need to enter and destroy peoples' otherwise perfectly fine threads?
This thread is intended to discuss Journey.
Either contribute to the topic at hand or have the decency to butt the fuck out and go to a Perry board.

Noble, why would you think Generations is an accident? I hardly think the band was "coerced" into doing it...they had been writing for at least 2 years.

Because Augeri said that he had been writing for a SOLO album and it was only when Neal took notice by happenstance that they decided to proceed to do an album.

jrnyjetster wrote:I hardly think the band was "coerced" into doing it

Neal said on this very site that he and the band had resigned themselves to handing out EP's from here on out.
Neal said "management wasn't too happy with that" and so they were told to do an album.
Jon echoed similar sentiments in interviews stating that people didn't have time anymore for full cds.

jrnyjetster wrote:...they had been writing for at least 2 years.

Sadly, I believe they've been saying that just to keep the fans at bay. Maybe Augeri had been writing on his own, but as for the rest I cannot say. If the band were truly writing together for 2 years then where is all this stored up material? Augeri said that Jon's writing contributions came seemingly out of nowhere at the last minute. Two of the songs are from Arrival sessions. Two are from an Augeri solo endeavor. One is a cover tune. Some of the songs might've been composed on the road together as a unit, but much of the material seemingly came together haphazzardly.

That's interesting! Of course, we do have to keep in mind that having songs already written and in the can isn't anything new per se. That's probably how alot of bands are able to put out an album year in and year out. There's stuff lying around waiting for the right album and right time to be released. Although certainly there are some songs specifically written for certain albums (like concept albums,) I don't know if I would say Generations came about haphazzardly....but who knows? There had been what, at least five years since Arrival? I'm sure the guys probably had been writing for a new album, but maybe hadn't thought seriously as to when one would actually be released.

Of course that sounds all too much like Boston! LOL!!! I'm waiting for their next release! Should be in stores by 2012! :-)

Guess what? In an interview from a few years ago Neal said Journey's next about would be - A CONCEPT ALBUM!

Jon and Neal said they were considering that idea. Never heard them say they were definately going that route.

I thought I remember hearing something to that effect, however, I can't really say Generations is a concept album. I don't hear Neal saying anything to that effect now about Generations. When I think of a concept album, I think of albums like Kansas' In The Spirit of Things.

I give Journey another 5 years of touring and maybe one more CD. Sadly, I think it would be beneficial for Journey to either tour their asses off again next year on "Generations" or have a new CD by the end of next summer. If that were to happen then I can see Journey putting more CDs out.

I thnk Neal's remarks about a concept album was on the heels of Planet Us falling through, I believe he had once said that the Planet Us album would be a concept album as well. This made me think there might be a specific theme, not so much material, he had in mind that he'd take to Journey. It would be an interesting thing for Journey to attempt, I'm thinking of the way the songs Rubicon and Frontiers would have fit into a concept album. Whatever they'd come up with would have to be better than Mr Roboto. But I'm getting into another situation of giving a singer too much control over a rock band.

Depending on the success of Generations (which I happen to be kind of optomistic given a new label who houses Jrny like artists and TPIYH being on radio now albeit somewhat sparingly for the time being) I think we have more albums in our future.
They, as with all classic acts, will be further between.

The touring will continue as long as the crowds are there and judging by this years crowds we'll being seeing these guys every touring season for years to come.

Tours are nice, Red. But without new material, the greatest hits act gets old fast for me. The highlights of the show I saw last month were the new ones, even Gone Crazy!

Shit, no one wants to believe more than me that we will get the next album sometime in 2006.
It's just hard to fathom that in the current horrible music/radio landscape.

In my radio region, we have a station that plays everything. Everything from Beatles to the new crap that is on the radio now. I had thought at first that this radio station (which used to be the top radio station for the latest hits before changing formats) would be the best chance for the classic bands like Journey to become fresh in people's minds and that it would be a catapolt for them to get their new stuff exposed, but it hasn't quite worked that way as of yet.

I thought the same thing Greggie! I guess part of it depends on where Journey sent their "add requests". All I could find was the listing for ROCK. Those mix stations are not ROCK.

I think it was a HUGE mistake not releasing Generations until WAAAAAY after the tour started. I mean, if they did that, they could have OPENED with Place in Your Heart and the fans would have gone crazy!!!!

Yeah, but the plan was to start with the early stuff and work forward chronologically. I agree about the way they are distributing it, though. They need to tour next year and play 7 or 8 songs off it, a well as 3 or 4 from Arrival. Add in 10 of their "dirty dozen", and that makes 20-22 songs. Perfect!

I really didn't see the need of the guys performing the tune chronologically...I know it fits into the whole Journey from beginning up to the present, but mixing the dirty dozen in throughout the concert is a better approach...IMO.

I agree, but Neal has wanted to do a tour with this format for a long time. When I saw them, they abandoned it and just played the songs like a regular concert. I didn't get any pre-Perry stuff, but that didn't bother me!

You DID get ripped, bro.
But you did get your favorite new song, OOHW, right?

I hope they put the Pre-perry set (every song actually) on the new Texas dvd.....

I definately feel that, should the pre-Perry set remain intact on the DVD, that they will retire the pre-Perry material alltogether. I agree with NiG that the tours from here on out should rely heavily on the dirty-dozen and the Augeri-era material. Remember Me, 2-3 songs from Arrival, 1-2 songs from Red13, 5-7 songs from Generations and then the dirty dozen!
