The radio we grew up with does not exist today. Yes it evolved out, but it does not exist anymore. Therefore, the radio we grew up with is dead.

Is that good or bad? Don't know. I know I, like many others here, miss what it was, but is that just clinging to a comfortable past? Are we getting more set in our ways as we get older?
I would suspect that given the overwhelming number of options open to us for entertainment, that a throw back to what Journeyman suggests would not get enough of the targetted demographic.

angiekay wrote:I'll be the first to agree that radio sucks these days. Same music, same promotions, little creative freedom being given to jocks. When I first started in radio we could play anything we wanted, at least at the station I worked at and I'll admit we were a little behind the times. It was 1989 and we were still playing a lot of vinyl mixed in with cds. The problem with radio started in the mid 90's when some legislators, in particular Larry Pressler from this very state I live in, proposed a communication act that would allow companies to own more radio and tv stations per market. It gave the government less hand in communication regulations, but made way for a corporate nightmare. Radio used to be a service, it used to be entertainment. Now it's becoming a greedy money hungry machine. The order of importance went from you the listener, then jocks, clients and staff to the client period. Jocks and listeners are at the bottom of that heap. They wanted to make money, so they played what (they thought)would get the listeners to listen. Now that's backfired on them because they are it's such a narrow genre now, they keep going with the same format.
Do any of you know why you keep hearing the same songs on the radio? YOU choose them. I'm serious. Apparently when owners started buying all these stations, keeping track of what format you wanted for each station became overwhelming. Thus, the invention of the all knowing consultant. That's how consultants and radio stations pick their songs. Markets do test marketing and surveys to see what people want to listen to. I have no idea how they pick the surveyees. Some they have come in and fill out diaries. Some they call on the phone. What amazes me, is they are CONSTANTLY doing these surveys and the results never change!!
What I do know that it is up to the listener to take their radio back. Clear Channel is getting the message in some markets, esp the small markets. There is almost no Clear Channel in South Dakota. The stations that were here tried their voice tracking and bs and left within a couple years. People in this part of the world want local. My suggestion to the people here, your family friends, etc. start writing to your station MANAGERS(pds and jocks have their hands tied most of the time), to Clear Channel to Cumulus... hell, write to the businesses you hear on the air. As sad as it is, they have the strongest voice. If a client comes to my manager and says, "You know my clients used to listen to your stations, but they are sick of the same music and same whatever...what can you do?" you can damn well bet those managers are going to listen. All they have is dollar signs in their eyes and they will do anything to avoid losing money from a client who is losing money by their ads not being heard.
If you really want radio back, boasting about listening to the internet and satellite's are certainly not going to help your cause. Before you know it, that is going to be your only choice if you don't support it, then what happens to new music? How much new music do you hear on the satellite? Sadly the music industry is in the same boat. They are manufactured groups, nobody is a singer/songwriter anymore. It all sounds the same. It's all cookie cutter. They are no great stand out bands and artists anymore.
As far as radio is concerned, it certainly is a changing medium and where it is going is anyone guess. I can't see radio disappearing forever, but we definitely need the listener support behind it.
Radio Ga-Ga.
jrnyman28 wrote:1. How it used to be was good. And it is not like that anymore. I do not call your opinions lame. You don't like that I call it "dead" fine...whatever! Does it really make you feel better that I say "it has ceased to exist"?
jrnyman28 wrote:2. You said it, radio used to be entertainment. That is why I think we need to get back to 'entertaining'. We need DJs with personality and knowledge (or atleast opinons). And we need to be entertained by the music as well. Giving them some room to breathe would create this environment IMO.

Because radio DOESN'T "cease to exist". It's still there, you just don't like it...big difference.

I have plenty of personality AND knowledge if I do say so myself, thanks. Every break I have I talk not only of our promos, but extensively of the bands I play, old news AND new news, trivia, blocks of bands, etc. Maybe you just listen to a really crappy station..or could it be us lowlife losers out here in the barren plains of South Dakota actually have the talent and know how of how to run fairly entertaining, cookie cutter-less radio?!?? Hmmmmm....

I hate to break it to you, but this little multimillion dollar set of radio stations in SOUTH DAKOTA makes more then your little train set does in a month. $500,000 a MONTH on one station alone.
Opening act hit it right on the head with this: Could you be any more insecure...
I'm sure you were a "loser in radio" as you noted above..that's why you run a train now.

Funny..Want to compare paychecks? By the way,I am in NO way bragging..you brought it up
I will however respond to this. Who in the hell cares what you make? Who cares what I make? Is this what this conversation is about to you...money? No wonder you don't give a shit about radio. I bet you hate your job too but hey you make lots of money so it's all good! That's really sad, Deano. I make enough money to make me completely happy and my job makes me that way too. Sorry you have to compensate. I bet you drive a big truck too....

No, idiot has lost my interest and attention.
Hey Deano, still waiting for the cd you said you burned and sent to me...Christ, thank God I wasn't holding my breath....again, you are an angry little man.....LOL..OA couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. You two aligning? Go for it..too funny... I see Mondale/Ferraro all over again.

jrnyman28 wrote:That is great that you are ONE of the ones. We have SOME here as well. But as for listening to crappy radio stations...you hit the nail on the head. That is ALL WE HAVE!! That is the ENTIRE POINT to my post! I am sorry I did not put "MOST" anywhere in my post. But on the LARGE SCALE, what I described is not how radio IS...but apparantly it is how YOU are. Great...then we need more of YOU!

Was THIS the comment that I lost you with?
I just have no time for people who think they better then others because of where they live or what they make.
Me talking about the radio station finacial is fact, anyone can check on that. Deano has no idea what he's talking about esp when it comes to SD(and really, we DON'T want he likes here), he's never been here,
just watches movies about it.
You all have your opinions about radios stations.
Angiekay wrote: I have no problem with you. You are always respectful and can talk a talk and carry on a conversastion without belittling people and calling them names. You are knowledgeable and if you aren't, you ask questions and are geuninely interested in an answer. I respect your opinio
Greggie wrote:I loved the DJs with personality....I think that is one reason why I love listening to the "Johnboy and Billy Big Show" in the mornings. Of course you don't hear much in regards to music.....
What I had noticed is that not only are the songs playing on auto, but that even the DJs' "commentary" was recorded. So, much of the broadcast is a recording.
I guess though, that works good during the 3rd shift hours.
That is my point..There is no talent anylonger. I could sit there and give a weather report and spin discs all day..Geez
That's why what Stern, and to a lesser extent Mark and Brian do is talent, and takes talent to write sketches and games..He's brilliant.
I do think it's where you live. We really do have some decent radio stations here. But I know the trend is growing for pre-recorded, canned crap. Can we say Jack fm?
Where you live is irrelevant. The big boys are on everywhere.
By the way, Jack and Howard sparred this week. Now Jack is being overly sarcastic playing bits containing Howard all the time..Pathetic.
And while you may find them entertaining, I believe people in general are gullible. Tell somebody enough times something is cool, and they tend to believe it...
even if it isn't true.
And before you decide to throw your napalm at me, I have no problem with the fact that they are in existance or that for you, they are what you find entertaining. Diversity is a good thing.
Jack fm is a pathetic attempt to further go down the road of full automation. Call me old fashioned (and I know you do), but I prefer actual people with my radio.
Donning flame suit now....
Rock'ndeano wrote:That's funny, because you are the one who belittled me FIRST. Go back and read it.
Rock'ndeano wrote:Agree 100%. That's why Angie is lying to herself. There isn't anyone who wants to hear a "mixed CD" for a radio profram. Like 28 said, he knew a guy who had personality, and he kept listening for that reason. Why the Hell would anyone listen to a radio station that simply spins records?
Rock'ndeano wrote:
Secondly, Angie is also wrong about her lil ol station making 500k per month. I was wondering if that was in US dollars..There is no way that is happening. There is a reason why DJ's are becoming extinct; or two. 1) The radio stations cannot afford personnel, and make the profit they want, let alone any profit;
and 2) no one wants to hear someone spin the same thing over and over.
