Late Nite- what the hell was this.

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Sat Nov 19, 2005 5:13 am

What was this?
An attempt by Neal to be a "name" outside of Journey?
Something he was coerced into against his will?
Just a side project to pass the time?
It's an ecclectic mix of tunes to be sure, I just don't really know what to think of it.

Comments.

I haven't listened to that CD in a loooooooong time. I will have to dig it out to let you know what I think/thought of it.

What's your favorite Schon solo CD, TNC?

Though a little subdued for my tastes, I happen to have an affinity for Neal's Beyond the Thunder.

BTT is my favorite, too. Of course, I prefer both Schon/Hammer albums over it, though.

I have always loved Late Nite. It is definately Neal's most mainstream solo project. Was it released before or after Perry's Street Talk. If it was before, then it would be the 'reason' for Perry to finally do a solo. (Herbie always mentioned this would happen, but everyone compare to Scchon & Hammer). If it was after, then I guess it would be Neal's response to Perry's solo. One thing to note is that it was Neal's first work with Deen. And if I am not mistaken, Sheryl Crow sang back-up on there somewhere.

I didn't look it up, but I seem to remember Late Nite coming out around 1989.

Late Nite is my favorite solo cd by Schon, with a close second being Beyound the Thunder. Late Nite came out in 89, just before the Bad English cd, and after the Journey Greatest Hits cd the year earlier.-ERIC

When you compare the recent (i.e. the last 3) cds released by Schon) it's the best effort by him...I recall hearing "Inner Circles" on KLOS (95.5) in California back in 1988, during a promotion/interviews he did....great fusion song...wish there were more of this caliber in Schon's repitior....don't see why there shouldn't be more, especially with former band-mate Steve Smith a phone call away...

Also dug the "Burtnik" co-penned tracks on this cd. BTW - did you know - Burtnik (former Styx guy) was almost in "HSAS", it would've been called "HSBS"...Burtnik confirmed this in an email to me back in the days of when he and Rosie had "Prodigy" and were actively posting on one of the message boards there...can't remembe what forum it was...

Speaking of Burtnick (or Burtnik, whatever he's going by these days :-) check out the outtro solo on "Day your ship gets through" on the classic "Heros and Zeros" album...great solo!

I've got a couple tracks from one of Neal's solo cds on the same compilation that I first heard Loved By You on. One of them is Roberta Flack's Killing Me Softly and the other is Shania's From This Moment. I'm assuming these are from Voice, because it came out just a little while before my friend made me the tape. If I'm right, is that whole cd as beautiful as these two cuts? They're just amazing.

The CD was good...but it is like MUZAK. It is light jazz renditions of good songs. Neal's playing is great, and the CD was aptly named since Neal's guitar becomes the voice of the songs, but it was still "lite"...

Oh but Dave, this is the way I think guitar should be played. It's not that I don't appreciate the skill that goes into screaming, scorching riffs. I think it's necessary, to a reasonable extent, in rock music, it's just that I LOVE hearing the melody expressed so eloquently on the strings.

Precisely what a guitar virtuoso friend of mine said when I played it for him. It's competent stuff for sure, but it's rendentions of someone else's already recorded music.
Herbie Herbert says the "Voice" album is brilliant, I say he's full of shit.

Based on the two cuts that I've heard, I have to agree with HH on this.

No problem, I understand. But there is a difference between Voice and Beyond The Thunder or Electric World or even I On U. Voice sounds like MUZAK because, as Deano said, it is guitar renditions of someone else's vocals. As I said, he does a great job, but it is a little distracting that his guitar is notably replacing a vocal. I like his original solo material far more than this one. But Voice is the sort of thing that brought Neal some recognition...and I think that is because the music was recognozable and "known" already.

Maybe not brilliant, but it was the smartest thing Neal has done in a long time! "Covering" other songs with his guitar made the work recognizable and I think that is what led him to a Grammy nomination and a little name-recognition.

I made a compilation CD for a friend of mine once. I always try to have one instrumental on CDs so I included this one. For the very reason that I knew she would recognize the song and know why it was there. But I always make my own copy of these CDs and I listen to it a lot...skipping that song a large portion of the time.

I understand what you're saying. For someone like me who is into the vocals it's wonderful to hear lyrics to songs we know expressed almost verbally on guitar strings. It may not appeal to Schon's hardcore rock fans, but it really displays his talent. I really wish he had won the Grammy.

I think I'd pick Late Nite #1, its the most diverse and everything is great. Rains Coming Down is among my favorite songs ever. BTT is is cool stuff, it is lite-er than Voice however, imo. I disagree about Voice being like muzak, muzak has no feeling whatsoever. Though the songs on Voice are soft, the emotion in Neal's playing is as intense as anything he's done, weeping at times, like on I Can't Make You Love Me. It admittedly was done because he owed the label an album and this would take less time than an album of original material. Prayer for Peace from Electric World may be the best thing Neal ever recorded. The three Higer Octave albums may be lite for some, but they're as heavy as he could probably get by with on that label and stil give them something they felt would appeal to their market. Piranha Blues and I ON U are awesome as well. All his solo recordings are diverse and show different sides of him. If I could only have Journey's catalog or Neal's outside projects, I might go with the outside projects, certainly if a couple more SS albums are completed.
