RE: Generations - I tried to be openminded

Postby sngrchk04 » Sun Dec 18, 2005 1:51 am

And this time, it wasn't my fault that I did not listen to it.

I went to a record store yesterday to shop for Mark, and saw one of those "listening post" things...I picked up a "Generations" CD, scanned it, and the screen said:

"Sorry, unable to retrieve information at this time."

I thought it might've been defective, so I tried another, and another, and another....

NOTHING WORKED.

HELL, I picked up MADONNA'S new CD, which BTW was released AFTER "Gens"....and THAT ONE worked!!

So whatever.....maybe it's telling me not to waste my money.......

 PS - oh yeah - I nailed the Anthem.

Seriously, of the three post-perry cds this is the one that she is least likely to enjoy. To encourage her to spend hard earned money on it is a disservice to her. Half of the songs on Generations would have been better off on a Neal side project. I am a huge fan of the new band having seen them 8 times since 1998, and I think Generations was a huge mistake. It may have done well financially because of the ticket price tie in, but good luck selling many at retail from here on out. Take a look at the used prices on the Internet...lots of sellers and few buyers.

I thought Remember Me was awesome and definitely in the vein of classic journey anthems. I didn't see Augeri trying to mimic Perry...it was the music that made it seem like a song from Journey's heyday of the early to mid80s.

Arrival suffered from really an abundance of mediocre songs. Higher Place, All The Way, Kiss Me Softly....would have been good supporting songs to a song like Message of Love, Remember Me, etc. I thought the direction they took with Red13 was great. Force rockers to please the diehard rockers and enough Journeyesque hooks to grab most of the mainstream Journey fans.

Neal took advantage of the outcries from the hard rock Journey fans to lead this band in a direction he already was determined to go in...albeit with Soul Sirkus.

Diehards, myself included, love to hear new songs played at concerts, old non-hit songs or, especially, new material. But, lets be honest. OK maybe there are a few younger fans who are discovering Journey and liking this sound because they are used to a more raw rock sound...that has been a staple since the grunge era. Hard edge rockers and jams have their place in a concert setlist to break up ballads and provide ballance, but to have a Journey studio album dominated by "jams put to lyrics"....what the hell??? I don't mind a few here and there well-placed...I tend to skip Castles Burning about half of the time, but I don't object to it being there...I would have rather seen another MOL or CTTL type of song, though.

The way I see it, Augeri is an excellent singer in his own right...to me he doesn't sound like Perry much at all. He does on the Journey hit songs, but I think that is because he tries to faithfully cover those songs (no pun intended) and two because the music is the same...the playing helps add to the illusion that Augeri sounds like Perry. I think the point I am trying to make is that I wish Neal would return to his 80s style of playing. Its not 'how much' he plays, it 'what' he plays that matters to me. When you add up the fact that Neal is playing much harder these days, and Castronovo plays much harder than Smith...for me you have new Journey material that doesn't sound much like classic Journey at all. And to say that it sounds like Departure or Evolution seems equally absurd to me...Journey hasn't sounded like that since Cain replaced Rolie.

I loved the 2001 DVD and will buy the 2005 DVD...hopefully the Generations songs will grow on me a bit...I do like FITH and PIYH.

I guess music is subjective.

Generations is awesome. There are 2 throwaways, tops.

To each their own.

SNGRCK, I will gladly send you a copy..just ask me.

Then you will see that those of us who have heard it, like it. Unlike the Loons, who thinkJourney w/o Perry is kryptonite..

Your right to say she shouldn't is equal to my right to say she should. How well do you know Nora? Maybe Nora is a closet rocker who would enjoy some of the harder stuff. We know, as a singer, she appreciates the balladry a little more....but the rest is a guess. My point is that it is up to her to decide. The rest of us view the CD differently than she will.

I agree completely.

Calbear94 wrote:Arrival suffered from really an abundance of mediocre songs. Higher Place, All The Way, Kiss Me Softly....

I agree with All The Way, but I am shocked you would include Kiss Me Softly or (especially) Higher Place as part of any "mediocre" songs.

Calbear94 wrote:I thought the direction they took with Red13 was great. Force rockers to please the diehard rockers and enough Journeyesque hooks to grab most of the mainstream Journey fans.

I LOVE Red13. But for you to say Journey should musically sound like they used to, then say this was a good direction is contradictory.

I do not view "Generations" like that at all. There are many songs structured the same as most Journey songs. Even when the band is really rockin', they are not "jamming" like the pre-Perry days or anything.

Very well put.

Calbear94 wrote: I think the point I am trying to make is that I wish Neal would return to his 80s style of playing. Its not 'how much' he plays, it 'what' he plays that matters to me.

But that would exclude Red13.

Calbear94 wrote:When you add up the fact that Neal is playing much harder these days, and Castronovo plays much harder than Smith...for me you have new Journey material that doesn't sound much like classic Journey at all.

This is well put too.

Calbear94 wrote:And to say that it sounds like Departure or Evolution seems equally absurd to me...Journey hasn't sounded like that since Cain replaced Rolie.

Oh but they DO! There are songs that would easily fit stylistically with what the band was doing in that era. And Jon's vocals can be similar to what Gregg did. You have songs that sound like Frontiers era, you songs that sound like Infinity era, you even have one (KTYLM) that might fit in with the ROR era. And the biggest reason this band sounds like a return to the Infinity/Evolution/Departure era is because of all the different styles represented on the CD. Back then the band was not pigeon-holed into one particular sound. And they are not today either.

Calbear94 wrote:I loved the 2001 DVD and will buy the 2005 DVD...hopefully the Generations songs will grow on me a bit...I do like FITH and PIYH.

Glad you like a few. To me, I can understand why some would not like about 4 or 5 songs on the cd. But that still gets you more than half that you should like IMO. And if you want to complain about production, occassional lyric content, track order, etc I can easily understand. There are problems on/with this CD. But it is an extrememly enjoyabl CD for many, so I hold that this is a return for Journey. And a welcomed one at that...

Tell me hockey is NOT the most exciting sport to watch live ! By the way, most hockey players are not huge. W e wear a lot of armour and remember, skates add 3 inches to your height. There are NHLplayers who go 5'10" and are immensely talented.

Actually, as I was rushing down to the Mail centre to get your package out, I tripped over the damned parking block and landed square on the cast..now there is blood oozing out, and it looks like the repair is now ruined..Dammit!

Hey, instead of blasting me, you should try being nice to me.

PS- you had to buy the Jersey? Actually it's called a sweater, but the team could have either loaned it you, or comped it out to you as well. If I was Mark, I would last about 22 seconds making love to my girkl in hockey gear!

Nora,

Glad you "nailed" the Star Spangled Banner. Who knows what Key was thinking when he penned that one.

As far as GENERATIONS, trying to get you or anyone to buy THAT CD or ANY CD is ridiculous. Who cares? You either want to try it out or you don't. I see that RND is going to send you a copy - there you go, problem solved.

For movies, music and the like, I'll take people's recommendations, but just because someone else likes it doesn't mean I will.

A lot of people on the old VH-1 forum and this one like Frontiers and that was my least favorite album from Journey! There was a preponderance of songs that I simply did not like, period and it doesn't matter HOW many people like them, it won't change my mind.

Dave sent me a copy of GENERATIONS before I had the chance to get it, but eventually DID get copies at the concert I attended with my wife. Also bought the import.

I do ....according to "Ripley's Believe It Or Not", the SSB melody is actually an ENGLISH PUB DRINKING SONG, slowed to half-tempo!!
( Also, the "Circus Theme" is actually a Roman March, sped up - I'm not kidding!)

Of course, it should've. Neal dropped the ball in a major way with that oversight. He later said he wasn't around and was tending to SoulSirkus while the Generations track listing was composed. You mean to say no one in the Journey camp thought to keep him in the loop? He never thought to call one of the guys and have a say in what songs go in and which songs stay out? Just shameful.
It's too bad, too, because with one more epic melodic rock anthem, the album might've been a classic.
