Bill Graham Tribute...

Postby Clasicrockldy » Mon Mar 27, 2006 4:10 am

I just received some video of the Bill Graham Tribute last Friday. Two things I noticed on this is...

Ross and Smitty weren't there..

Steve messed up on Faithfully.

Now I still have to see the rest of the video. :D

I watched the whole video. Steve, Neal, and Jon played Faithfully and Lights. Steve's voice sounds ragged. You can tell he hasn't sung in a long time.

Everytime I see that video I feel sad.The magic was gone. They weren`t feeling comfortable with eachother on stage.
Plus, that was a Greatful Dead audience.
If Steve messed up Faithfully (although I wouldn`t say that) ,maybe it was because he didn`t had time to gear up vocally. It was an unexpected case.Let`s not forget he was off stage since 1987 and the Graham tribute was in 1991.He didn`t sing "a note" in between.

You're right Shania, I shouldn't of said he messed up. I should of said that he forgot the words, which happens when you haven't sung a song in a long time.

I agree, it was a spur of the moment thing, to which he had no time to get his voice in shape.

It is sad to see the whole video. I had only seen a small portion of it some time ago, and to see it now, in it's entirety the magic was gone.

You know what's REALLY sad...

When they show the audience during "Lights":

Most people have sunglasses on, so you can't see their eyes...but their MOUTHS are just HANGING OPEN in shock, or something....

Was it his singing? Or the fact that they were back on stage as a trio - in the '90s....?

His voice wasn't good there. But I think it sounded ok. The trade mark sound was still there. Loved how he talked to the crown. And I loved how Neal improvised with Perry for a few minutes. I thought it was good to see. Just a bit of the magic was there.

Eric,

If you want the video, I will get it to you. It isn't very long, so I would have to put something else on the dvd to fill it out.

I heard Perry sing Lights and Faithfully from this tribute.
I think he sounds good on both.
What he drastically lost in range he compensated with soulfulness and emotiveness.

Eric,

I still have your list. Let me see what I have that you might not have, and I will go from there.

I do have a few interviews with Steve, do you want something like that on it?

I've only heard the audio, and Perry sounded really bad. I am sure it was the fact he hadn't sang with the band in years, and apparently it was a spur of the moment thing anyway...Knowing that Graham had a huge impact on Journey's career, it made sense for them to be there, but if you know anything about the SF music scene in the 60's and 70's, and the Fillmore West and Bill's impact and influence on that scene, you'd know that the critical darlings of that music scene had absolutely no respect for Journey and just about hated them...You can hear Perry pleading for people to sing along with him during Lights. The audience wanted none of it. They were there for Bill's legacy and association with Hendrix, Santana, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service...etc etc....Check out wolfgang's vault (Graham's Stash) and see how many references to Journey there are...

Aww, Jeremey. Not really accurate. I have the video. Perry did "overplea" to the crowd, but it was a somber day. I thought Perry was great. So what he sounded a bit haggard, but it was fitting for the day.

The crowd wasn't all gummy and cheery, yet they shouldn't have been either.

It wasn't a Journey crowd and it was a somber occasion, but it turned out to be a very classic look for Perry. He looked great! The picture of him taken at that time is one of his best, imo. I feel that the vocals and music fit the occasion.

Yeah, I went with the one that I figured would piss you and your fellow Loons off the most. Looks like I picked the right one!

Sugarbaby, THIS is where you lose credibility, and bring on the Loon moniker.

We don't care how he looked. Loons care about that shit.

Anyone know how to post the link publicly? I will be more than happy to do that.
