I love Deen singing a couple of songs, but he really doesn't have a lot of power behind his voice.

That's just so wrong on its face.
There's a reason why Augeri declined digging deep into the back catalog during the Detour tour (according to a Neal interview). Partially because Augeri (presumably) wanted to move forward & not backward, and more primarily, because those songs are amazingly difficult to sing. That's why Deen took them on. Obscure classics like Suzanne, Mother Father, Where Were You, Keep on Running etc are every vocalists worst nightmare!
Also, if he doesn't have power in his voice, why has the band been defering to him for the high notes as early as 2003?
Sorry if I am coming off surly, but I have seen Augeri-era Journey several times and the ONE constant in the band has ALWAYS been Deen.
Never left a concert anything short of having been blown away by the dude.

Ever hear Augeri tackle this one? The guy would do it nearly all in falsetto (if u can even call it that).
Here, as always, Deen does it with such unflinching gusto that it would make a 70's-era Perry quiver in his boots.

Deen's got a better voice than Steve Augeri, and with training would be a better fit for the band vocally than JSS, but in my opinion he doesn't have the stamina and polish to pull off a full tour's worth of material. And apparently he isn't too comfortable out from behind the drums. But Deen's a monster drummer - One of the best in the world! To have him lay down the sticks would be like getting Sammy Hagar to quit singing just to play guitar.

I have to agree that Deen has good range, but I (like a couple others) think his voice is a bit "thin" to last show after show, for every song. He's already had some vocal troubles and now Augeri's voice is shot to hell. Time for them to move on to some more vocal friendly material, IMO. Leave in maybe 4 classics, two for Deen and two for Jeff and write something new that is Soto-esque.

Quiet? That's not a word I would think should ever be used in the same sentence as Deen Castronovo! Sorry Barb.

I especially adore his versions of Mother, Father and Suzanne. I think Deen does Suzanne better and his Mother, Father is right up there with Perry. But I'll take anything Deen sings. One heck of a voice.

I liked the Augeri/Deen combo very much. That is a tribute to Steve Perry's work for sure. Much like Boston's Brad Delp and Fran Cosmo. Augeri (before vocal damage) could sing the lower stuff very well and quite a bit of the higher stuff. However, Deen could blast off when necessary and put the exclamation point on the songs.

At Boston shows, when Brad Delp can't hit certain high notes , he'll defer to Fran Cosmo and smile and applaud. The crowd seems to love it. It's a band after all, not just a solo act.

Maybe Journey should have started doing that more earlier on. That might have saved a lot of trouble. There is no shame in having 2 people do the work of Perry from the 80's.

Just my opinion.

Ok. I'll put a qualifier on my statement: At the shows I've attended and heard Deen sing and the boots I have of him singing, his voice does not project loudly and doesn't have much power to it, although he sings beautifully. That's just my opinion, and I'm stickin' to it!

Actually, I really starting liking Deen singing after I heard him in CA in 04 at a casino (can't remember the name of it now dang my memory sucks) and I think maybe the sound was just better indoors as it was really fantabulous.
