Let's talk about the Journey album "Frontiers."

1. Could someone explain the cover art to me? It's confused the heck outta me forever, I must admit.

2. It's known that management axed "Ask the Lonely" and "Only the Young," two incredible songs, from the album at the last minute and put two others in.... what the two others were, I'm not sure. Forgetful me. If you could take two songs out of the album, and put these two in, what ones would you remove? This album was extraordinary, but I feel that "Back Talk" and the title track were a little dull. Back Talk was a change of pace, certainly, and I must admit that I enjoyed Steve Smith's drumming on this song. I just don't think it really fits in that well and doesn't appeal to my ears as much as the others. "Frontiers" just kinda bugs me for some reason, especially with what seems to be an entire minute devoted to the overlapping of Steve Perry's voice.

3. I just wanna say that "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" is my favorite song of all time, for so many reasons. And that the ending of the video for "After the Fall," with Steve Perry dancing around like a goon, cracks me the heck up. I love the song though, of course.

This album cover was changed by Perry.

Back Talk sucks...the song and the site.

Troubled Child sucked. Why not keep ATL, and OTY? Is there a law saying you can't have 12 songs?

1 - I have no idea.

2 - I believe the two songs were "Back Talk" and "Troubled Child". I love TC but BT could have been dropped for all I care. Anyway, I think it was a colossal mistake to leave "Ask the Lonely" and "Only the Young" off. I would've dropped BT and left everything else intact.

3 - "Rubicon" is my favorite Journey tune of all-time, much less just this album.

Cover art seems to have something to do with the "machines" references in the title track.

I still find it to be relatively continuous with the the previous few....ROR was the first real departure fromt that format...

It was "Separate Ways" that turned me onto Journey, really.

I used to be huge into country and that was all I listened to. I started getting into classic rock and had started listening to classic rock radio, and got my first few rock albums: greatest hits from Van Halen, ZZ Top, Bob Seger, The Doobie Brothers. I knew about Journey and really liked "Any Way You Want It" and "Don't Stop Believin'," but had never really bothered getting an album.

I went through a really devastating break-up, and as I was driving that night a song came on the radio that really grabbed me. The thundering keyboard and guitars made me go "holy heck, this is awesome!!" The lyrics and passionate singing, though, really jerked me because it was a mirror image of what was happening to me. The "Nooooo! NOOOO!!!" at the end sealed the deal, and of course, Neal's soaring guitar throughout the whole song was really making me sweat!

When the DJ said "That was 'Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),' by Journey!" I immediately pulled off the highway and pulled into the first CD store I found, purchased Journey's Greatest Hits, and a few weeks later I found Frontiers and got it too.....

.....and look at me now! It's amazing how one song can change you forever. :P

Follow the money. There might not be a law against having twelve on an album, but it is against the law of smart business to to make less money. The band probably thought there was money it taking those songs off Fronitiers and selling them on sound tracks. Just a guess.

Troubled Child is a great song, I wish they'd do it live. I love how gritty Perry is on that. Great lyrics too.

Seperate Ways was never my fave and I'm way tired of it now anyway. Message of Love sounds kind of like that song, but its much better.

The picture on the cover is Mr. Roboto. Its where DeYoung ripped off that idea from.

There is certainly no law against 12 tracks on an album, but back then I don't think many had more than 10 around that time. My sis and I were talking about this after the show in San Antonio. I remember when I bought Hysteria "back in the day". It was advertised as having 63 minutes of music like that was a big deal. It was then - not so much now.

When the box set came out, it was mentioned that songs like BT and TC would probably not have seen the light of day until then. (Some folks would be ok with that!) Just my .02

They stole the idea from Styx. Instead of Mr. Roboto, they called it Elmo.

2. It's known that management axed "Ask the Lonely" and "Only the Young," two incredible songs, from the album at the last minute and put two others in.... what the two others were, I'm not sure. If they had changed it, it would no longer BE "Frontiers". Side 1 with the singles, side 2 with the more experimental stuff. It works for me. Also, Dave always makes the good point that saving the singles helped Journey during their time away from albums.

3. I just wanna say that "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" is my favorite song of all time, for so many reasons. And that the ending of the video for "After the Fall," with Steve Perry dancing around like a goon, cracks me the heck up. I love the song though, of course.

It always pisses me off when radio plays the short version of the SW...The longer version is so much better. The same with LTS without City of the Angels.

They decided to save Only The Young and Ask The Lonely for movie soundtracks and since these songs were top 20 material, it would keep Journey on the radio during their long hiatus after the Frontiers tour, until Raised On Radio was finally released in 1986.l
