I remember Ronnie James Dio saying in an interview that drinking alcohol is actually worse on the vocal chords than smoking. True?

Probably because the more you drink, the more hard of hearing you become, so the louder you talk --- especially in public places. At least that's been my experience, and then for some reason, ya wake up the next day all hoarse...lol!

Alchohol dries out the vocal chords. Makes them brittle and susceptable to damage. It removes the lubrication from them. Having said that, it can take the edge off of any tense-ness that the singer has and a bit of it can actually help the mind (though the vocal chords is another story). A lot of singing is mental as well.

I remember reading an interview with David Lee Roth where he was talking about recording one of the early Van Halen records (VHII, I believe). He said the producer told him he sounded too good, or something to that effect, and to go outside and smoke a pack of cigarettes and drink a few beers and then come back and give it another try.

Look what smoking and drinking did to Janis Joplin's voice. Hers was a clear voice in the early days, but then all the partying, drinking and smoking damaged her vocal chords, but damn, she could still sing the shit out of a song !

Yeah, that's true...you definitely hear a change if you listen to Janis' 1967 performances (or Monterey, anyways) and some of her final ones...even if she'd lived her voice wouldn't have lasted much longer with what she was doing to it.
