Perry's appeal-help me describe it

A sloooow nite at work yesterday. Bored. We started talking about music. Since a few of us are big Journey fans u just know it went there. I manage a late nite club/restaurant w/live music. Mostly patrons in their 30s 40s & up. Anyway we talked about Perry & his appeal. Apart from The Voice & the songs, what else did it for you about him? Some of the guys said they didnt like The Voice & he whined too much. WTF?

Apart from the one girl who loves Augeri the girls all think Perry had incredible sex appeal. The guys said he danced like a white boy. So did The Boss & we all agreed hes sexy too. We agreed Perrys not "classic good looks", yeah nose a bit big & all that. So why did/does he melt us into swooning heaps of female lust?

I think its about the way he sang the songs but I cant put it into words. Something about the power & the way he took my breath away. The guys who like/d him said even they got goosebumps on some notes. Some of the younger girls havent seen as much of him & wanted us to tell them more. I suggested they had to see video clips to get it.

So fellow Perry lovers what other words would u use to describe it? Help me out.

2. Belief in self.
3. Respect for styles that came before him....but making them his own.
4. Determination to do what he does best no matter what.
5. FEELING the song.
6. Confidence again - but this time using it to convey the songs very eloquently - and be at ease.
7. Contact with and respect for the audience.
8. Mastering the art of improv.
9. The "inner knowing" that what he does and HOW he does it is rare.

For me it's the voice. I have to say that because I heard him before I ever knew what he looked like or knew anything about him.
When I saw him, I believed he was a fabulous Native American - had no idea he was of Portuguese descent.

There are good voices and there are voices which reach into your very soul and touch you - deep.
Perry has that voice.
Hear him and you close your eyes and drift away, shuddering with goosebumps on some notes.

The way he looks is just an extra little bonus.

So his appeal would be that his voice has a power, clarity and rare beauty which touches my soul.

Well, she does a certain move - one that ALL the skaters perform during their routines - called "The Spiral" - a move where the skater balances on one blade, with the other leg extended out behind - and they glide all the way across the ice.

A simple move....

But the audiences ALWAYS LOSE IT when she does it!

And I believe it's because she puts EVERYTHING into it....and the joy on her face as she's skating....it gives me goosebumps.

I'll try to find video...it's hard to explain...but she has that "elusive Perryesque quality" going on when she skates, IMO.

Augeri would be Phil Niekro or Don Sutton....not the greatest talent, but honed his craft into hall of fame "stuff" with guts and work.
I guess it's gotta make Perry Cy Young. There's Cy Young, then pitchers who win the Cy Young Award.

I became hooked when I was 11, heard DSB on the FM and was hooked. It wasn't just Perry's voice though, it was the 'emotions' his voice and that song ran me thru that hooked me. After that I grabbed anything Journey I could.
I still LOVE all the Perry stuff to Frontiers but alot of that love also is tied to the memories and the time those songs tie me to.
I just wonder if I had never heard of Perry or Journey before, would I feel the same way today at 36 yo if someone played DSB for me?

I have a 19-year-old niece, who is TOTALLY into the "here and now", as far as music is concerned...well, one time about 2 years ago, I gave her a ride somewhere; I had the Journey "Greatest Hits Live" CD playing...."Who's Cryin' Now" was on, and just happened to end as we got to our destination.

I looked over at her, because she was UNUSUALLY quiet....

...she was sitting there, staring at the floor, mouth open, and SHAKING HER HEAD!

...and saying "oh my God" a few times.

I (innocently ) asked her what was wrong; she told me she NEVER HEARD ANYBODY SING LIKE THAT!! She said she was blown away....and she DOES NOT SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT UNLESS SHE MEANS IT (....must get it from me...heehee )

You are probably right. Even though I am 36, I love alot of the new music out there (I get bored w/ music quick, always looking for something new). Its just for some reason at the age of 10, Journey's music trapped me while all my freinds were raving about Zepp, the Doors, joining the KISS Army... Those little fuckers even made fun of me!!!

I can't account for the tastes of some women...I just don't get it at all, guess I'd have to be a woman to understand it. But my wife doesn't think Perry's sexy and I'm wondering if she's the only hardcore Journey female fan that doesn't think so. I always thought his stage presence was, well goofy. For me it's partly the way he makes me feel. So giving of himself in all his songs. There is just something you can't put your finger on about him but once he has touched you, you never forget.

He has a kick ass take no prisoners attitude when it comes to getting what he wants, especially when it comes to music. Balls! Dude is on a mission if he thinks he's right. Just like JSS, in some ways, he can be in your face if he needs to be. It's what made him great and made him burn out on all of it, too. Somebody said confidence. Chics find that sexy and always talk about his hair. I guess other than the obvious talent, it's charisma, strength and vulnerability. You never know which one you'll get and that is the Perry mystery. His age hasn't compromised any of the qualitites that made him appealing to men or women. All those notes up in the stratosphere were just a bonus on top of the personna. John Kalodner of Sony wrote once that Perry has that star quality just sitting in a restaurant in his regular (street) clothes. He's respected in the biz, regardless of how long he is absent from it.

The man exuded sexuality in vocal's and physicality. His voice penetrate's you to the depth's of your soul. He take's you to the place in your heart where you feel that warm rush exude through your body and your heart beat's faster. No other singer affect's me to the depth's that Steve doe's. It's not just his voice and his vocal range. It's the way he express's the song...he own's it...bring's it inside....feel's it. It's that special quality of soulfulness that he can pull out of himself. It's a very rare gift, to be so in touch with your inner self, and express that through your voice. He express's his sexuality in his voice...take's you to that place were his soul connect's with your's. Then of course there is his physical presence. In my eye's he was/is the essence of beauty in a man. The knowing eye's, that playful grin, the beautiful flowing hair. His movement's...at time's just that subtle sway of his hip's, back and forth...I was lucky enough to be there, in front of the stage...Steve singing...hip's gently swaying....he turned....our eye's meet...he held them to me....I felt our spirit's connect....a brief moment in time...never to be forgotten...........whew it's getting hot in here!!!! Voice first, since that's what hooked me from Day 1.
Somebody mentioned the goofy factor... I like a guy that has fun w/o regard to what everyone else thinks.
Attitude. "Who cares if you can't dance... just get up and dance!" And he did. (see goofy factor.)
Voice II... meaning his speaking voice. You can hear the melody in his words even if he's just talking about the weather.
Somebody else said exotic. Where I'm from, there were a lot of Portuguese, many with similar features. For me it had to be the combination of everything else in addition to the "unusual" looks. Hair too.
Power of Self. Onstage, he put every bit of heart and soul into a performance. Didn't matter if they were on Show 3 or Show 300, he still put it out there and everyone got their money's worth. (referring to Journey heyday, not Strange Medicine, since I haven't seen that one yet.)
Presence. He literally filled the room without having to do ANYthing.
Uniqueness. Perry fans know his voice instantly. I said in another thread that I feel it more than I hear it.
The IT factor. All of the above, and then some.

I have sung Classical Music written by Handel, Mozart, Mendelssohn, amongst others...during these concerts - which is a "complete Libretto"(written work) of one of these people...example - Mendelssohn's "Elijah", they would bring in the "Big Guns", if you will, to perform the solos (which, I'm sorry, are NOT that difficult...ANYone could've done them).

Anyway, my point IS: they would bring in these Professional Sopranos and such...and their vibratos would fluctuate to a SHARP ABOVE THE NOTE - - which is GRATING ON THE EAR!!

THAT's who they called IN?!

My God....the harshness of the tonality - I have perfect pitch - almost made me PASS OUT!

Steve DOES NOT HAVE THAT - his vibrato resonates the TONE ITSELF - and DOES NOT MOVE AN INCH OFF OF IT!

....God, to possibly hear that man sing Classical music....I think I'd die and go to Heaven....
