Just curious why you don't like them.

Because I've been in radio for 19 years and they have like three big songs. I don't know they just grate on me. I used to be able to tolerate them, but I'm just sick of them. All their music sounds alike.

Ah, the Boston guitar sound. Gotta love it. I think that's part of what makes them so great. No one else sounds like them. When I listen to the radio, which isn't as often anymore, I regularly hear most of the tunes from the first album and several from "Don't Look Back" as well.

Yeah,"Boston" may be the only debut album where EVERY TRACK on it still gets radio play. (at least in the Southeast- the least heard is probably Hitch a Ride, but I hear that one too.) And the DON'T LOOK BACK tilte cut, which I believe was SUPPOSED to be on the debut...perhaps, though, this is why alot of folks don't like em- cause they've been played in the ground for the last 30 years...

Somebody also mentioned the whole "grunge" scene a few posts back. I really dug alot of this music, and think that it sort of gave rock music a much needed kick in the pants, much in the same way Punk did in the 70's. Sure, some of it was utter crap, but to me there's no denying the greatness of Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Soundgarden (as well as their offsprng like FOO FIGHTERS and Audioslave). In listening to alot of 70's and 80's rockers reaction to that scene, I find it interesting how many of them felt that it was a much needed shot of energy as well, and I think, a really necessary backlash to the big haired excess that rock music was mired in by late 89-early 90's...Yeah, it hasn't really had lot of staying power, but what does anymore? Pop culture's time frame ain't what it used to be. I hear my students all the time talking of some "old song" that's "Played out" and there not refering to classic rock, but something that's less than 6 months old...the times, they are a changin'....

Yeah, I think I've heard all eight of the tracks on that debut played at one time or another. Unfortunately, "Hitch a Ride" doesn't get as much airplay and it's my favorite Boston tune. The solo is my favorite of all time.

I don't care so much for Pearl Jam (can't stand Vedder's singing AT ALL) or Nirvana but Soundgarden was a great band. Cornell is a phenomenal singer.

Hey Moon,
I caught these guys back in the mid-nineties openning for 7Mary3 in Vegas. Their 2 guitar players had just quit so it was John on piano and acoustic guitar, a bass player and drummer...
Simply Incredible; One of THE Best Live shows I've ever seen! John is so freaking talented, at times his voice is like early Elton.

This tour was behind their Debut, "Message for Albert" This is THE BEST 5FF album to date, in my opinion and, if you don't have it you gotta get it

I mentioned the Grunge Scene as one of my dislikes. I did like Nirvana when they first came out with Nevermind, it was as you say something different. But I would say it only took me a couple of months to grow weary of it as the rest of the world seemed to rocket it to crazy hieghts. Maybe if they had stayed just another band, but they were so media glamorized as " The New Beatles" and shit . I don't know, I just didn't get it. I never understood how Kurt Cobain was supposedly this "muical genius". Sound Garden got better overtime, but there real early stuff, just crap IMO. Never liked Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains. Their music was just to depressing all the time. As cheesy as the late 80s / early 90s hair band stuff got, it was still mostly about having a good time, you know sex, drugs, and RnR. Not about Over Dosing, killing yourself, etc.

Holy shit, we really do have similar tastes. I agree with almost all your list (love Matchbox20)..........but I would replace Survivor and Twisted Sister with Inxs (with Michael Hutchins) and Motley Crue..........and add a whole slew from the 70/80s like Whitesnake, Robert Plant, Steve Miller band, Streetheart,etc.

As for female singers I like Evanescence, Heart, Pat Benatar, Amanda Marshall, Melissa Ethridge, Sass Jordan, Blackeyed peas, and don't laugh but the Pussycat dolls....the main singer has a good voice/besides being gorgeous.....I mean come on don't ya secretly like that song "Dontcha".

Best concerts: Journey in 82, Bon Jovi, the Johns-squared (John Mellancamp & John Fogerty), Elton John, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Garth Brooks, Motley Crue, and seen April Wine a few times in my youth and believe it or not they were always good.

Journey is my favorite. After that, there is no particular order. I like most "80s" music - REO, Styx, Honeymoon Suite - to name a few. I like some Contemporary Christian Music - Shaun Groves (very cool guy), Third Day, Jeremy Camp - to name a few in that group. I also like older Country music - 70s and 80s. Usually, what I listen to depends on my mood.

With the exception of Journey & Steve Perry (obviously my fave singer), I'm not really big on 70s - 80s music (some other exceptions below) & rarely bought music until two years ago when I rediscovered SP & Journey. But, I like different kinds (not Rap at all or Country except a few songs, like by Willie Nelson & Eddie Rabbitt)...probably I love 40s Big Band music & 50s-60s songs the most (Motown esp.)

So, you can see I'm not really part of the melodic rock crowd. I might hear a song that draws me in & just buy that song & not the entire album, like Hard-Fi "Better do Better", or The Cure, "Just Like Heaven" (love those songs)...and I just heard Corrine Bailey Rae & was drawn to her light voice & song so I did buy the CD...mostly I think I am drawn to unique voices, unique sound,that can't be mistaken for anyone else & if they write their own lyrics, compose their own music, play an instrument, that is even better.

After the Beatles,1964 when I was in high school music turned towards bands that wrote,played live and actually had singers that could pull it off live. My favs were # 1 Journey and Queen, then Foreigner, Styx, Kansas, and later Survivor,Heart, Bryan Adams,DefLepard, and Bon Jovi. I will put Elton & Billy Joel in their own catagory. I must have left some out so, mea culpa.

I saw the man himself in concert last night (Bristol Colston Hall). He must be pushing 60 now but he's still got a fantastic voice. He seems to have gone back to his roots again now as well, as around two thirds of his set comprised Free and early Bad Company songs, plus a couple of brand new songs that are in a similar vein.

The only problem with Paul Rodgers' solo sets is they're too short. He plays for around 70 minutes, plus a couple of encores.

Is the name of the band overflow?

I'm not usually into christion rock, but I like some of Jars of Clay and Switchfoot. And Chris Daughtry's CR band was pretty good.
