Perhaps they should incorporate the talking to the coat thing Perry did on his FLOPSOME tour, how cool was that....
As much as I love Steve Perry, that was pretty damned funny!! FLOPSOME...

Here's what I don't get...hypocracy doesn't exactly apply, but something along those lines....Augeri is brow beaten for naturally sounding similar to Perry tone-wise, yet using relatively few "Perryisms". But Jeff is revered while using very many Perryisms and Perry's enunciation most of the time. I don't have a problem with the way Jeff is doing the material based on the recent boots and know that Perry was a big influence on him and he will naturally sing the songs the way he knows them from memory. I think it could easily be said that he was the one, not Augeri, trying to copy Perry. Augeri just had the "misfortune" of having a natural Perry-ish sound. Again, a disclaimer, I like what I've heard from JSS recently and think he is doing the songs the way they should be done. But I don't feel that he's bringing anymore of his own thing to them than SA did.

I just didn't like the way Augeri did the material. I never thought he sounded like Perry, but like a thin, pale imitation of him. I don't think Jeff sounds like Perry, but incorporates some Perryisms into his performances. I don't mind the Perryisms because he doesn't sound like he's singing in a Perry type voice. He sounds like himself with a few Perry flourishes. I think of those flourishes as a sort of tribute to Steve, not as trying to imitate him.

Plus Perry, Augeri and JSS all sound totally different from each other IMO. There might be the odd similarity if they're singing the same tunes but they're all different.
NoMoreTails wrote: As for Augeri, fine if you didn't like him, but I still don't see it as an imitation, as it was SA's natural voice.

JourneyRox wrote:W/Jeff, who has a proven track record as a songwriter, & who seems to be more of the kind of person who will assert himself, I believe he will influence songs & the direction of future Journey music. He also has a songwriting chemistry & history w/Neal & maybe that gives him more of an equal footing than Augeri ever had or perceived he had, if u know what I mean. Jeff has a soulfullness to his voice in the same league as Perry did although not in a copycat way. He has that power & richness to his pipes that Augeri just lacked. Also, Jeff never gave up music. He kept on trying. He had success in many ways but not in the US, his home, where he still really wants it. He hadn't gotten to the point of giving up on that yet. He might have thought about it. In fact, his new Talisman lyric notes suggest he did think of throwing in the towel once or twice. But it was just a fleeting thought. He still believes it will happen for him. Just fronting a classic rock band singing 80s songs isn't enough for Jeff. He'll want to make his own songs w/the band & put his stamp on it. He created a band w/Neal before Journey & he has a lot of respect amongst musicians even if he wasn't a household name to us yet. Therefore, he's not going to just "go along". He's going to want to inject himself into the creativity that ensues. He won't sacrifice his 20+ yrs of singing just to front Journey playing classic songs. He'll do it his way & put Jeff Scott Soto & everything he is into new songs that come out. He'll pump up Neal & Jon. He already is & u can hear it in the boots. He's what they always needed. I'm not sure they would have seen that in '98 if they'd met Jeff then. I think they wanted a follower then. Jeff has the "oomph" they need & I think they know they need it now.

The problem I did have with Journey w/SA was that on the new material they were slow to come around to having him use his own style, as some (ballads) of Arrival was tailored to be the way Perry might have done it.

Mikey Thomas is more wimpy than Perry, and possibly more full of himself.

Maybe Jeff is too masculine?
