Jr, who the hell wants to hear from him when it's just to bitch about some perceived slight and to get a dig in to compare himself to Perry. It's always about something someone said about him. You all enjoy it and let me voice my opinion. It has nothing at all to do with wanting a response from him.

I like hearing from Jeff. I like the fact that he interacts w/us, shares things about himself, how he became a singer, his career, his influences, stands up for himself when someone says something wrong & even laughs at himself sometimes. That is what really endeared me to the guy. It's also what made me understand why his fans are so damn loyal to him.

Perry had class. Jeff has class too. Perry was not afraid to swear & have fun. Here's a great example that cracks me up every time I listen to it:

FYI, an octave, if you're not musically inclined, is 12 WHOLE steps below or above it's original note. If it were an octave below, it would sound like Bowzer from Sha Na Na singing....come on now, a tad extreme, no?

OK I deleted the last post because it was slighlty incorrect. An octave is 8 notes or 12 whole steps from the root note. If Steve Perry is singing a high E, you can technically sing an octave lower and not sound like Bowser from Sha Na Na. I've worked with singers who do that all the time. It doesn't sound "the same" but at least it's in key. I think Steve Perry himself had to do it. Plus if the guitars are tuned down a half step, or in some cases a whole step (doubtful with Journey) it would make it easier as well. As far as Soto. I haven't heard him with Journey but saw him with Yngwie years ago and Soul Sirkus a couple years ago. He should have no problem nailing every note.

That's true, Sherrie. What people say is dissected to the nth degree. Hey, by the way, when did you become Italian? :D ("messageboarda") You know I'm just bustin' you... :)

I think the word "thin" was a bad choice, but I don't think he meant it as an insult. There was never anything "thin" about Perry's voice. In fact there are very few men larger in stature that could sing like Perry does. Jeff was in a situation where he felt he had to respond and those were just the words that came out. You of all people have to realize that I'd be all over him if I thought he was dissing Perry.

That's why I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Even though he used the word "thin," he can't be using it in a negative way toward Perry, based on what he has said about our favorite crooner previously. :D

JSS does have a point in the thinness vs bellowing bit. It's like comparing Steve Perry's tenor to the so-called "3 Tenors"...opera singers who've no matter how high I've heard them sing, they sound lower pitched to my ear than Steve Perry, and in actuality, they are likely hitting the same notes Perry did. The difference is that yes Steve's voice is thinner than theres, and that's not a slight. It just happens to be the tonal quality coming off that voice is all.

When I read that, I never once took it as a slight against Perry. It really boils down to style of the singer and as another poster pointed out, the physicality of it all.

On another note, JSS can speak whenever he wants. If we're allowed to say shit about him, he should have a right to say shit back. If some people hate that he speaks up, then get over it and stop your bitchin. It seems like that's about all some people know how to do. They bitch about a guys singing, and then bitch when the target speaks out correcting a misstatement. Makes me think that people like that have nothing better to do than bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch.

Get over it already. JSS is the singer and Perry isn't. JSS does his thing. Perry does his own thing. The way I see it is if Journey records and Perry records, then that's all the much better for me as I'm a fan of both.

Yep, I don't quite understand why the people who have posted not-so-nice things about Jeff here or on BT get all shocked when he responds to them.

Consider yourselves lucky, I'm a huge fan of his & would LOVE that. I don't know of any other artists who would do that.

I'm not sure I liked him calling Perry's voice "thinner" tho. But I don't think he meant anything bad by that.

What is the correct term for the difference they're actually noticing in Jeff's voice? Deeper timbre? Is that right?

I meant thinner only as in thinner than mine, his voice was plenty full & rich but if didn't have that Hagar/Gramm thickness on the more rocking stuff...still, not a diss on the Master, just in comparison...loved his tone as much as the next person!!

heardonthestreet wrote:Some of you may be calling it "not taking any shit" but I'd say it was more like complaining whiningly, imo.

Just because someone says that they are kidding or not dissing, does not mean it's to be taken as such. All the guys in the band have been criticized but you don't see them heading out, protesting and being defensive. His jabs about blatantly stealing style, who would hit the high notes if he and Perry were on stage and this "thin shit" sucks. He wouldn't even have had to state that he wasn't dissing Perry if he didn't already think that he was.

Sometimes you have to paint the whole picture as dumbasses (you for one who I'm just sick of reading your fucking whining!!) who take a comment & repaint it red!!! If I detail what I mean in a comment, it's so it's NOT taken wrongly...think about it....oh, sorry nevermind!!

Now criticism I can take, yo can downright say I suck...but if you're saying I sing songs an octave lower you're either using the wrong terminology or are simply deaf...that IS educating, teaching someone what the proper terms were.

Lastly, since I MUST explain every fucking word since you always read between the lines when there are no lines to read between, I am NOT nor would I EVER compare myself to Perry, he is in a class of his own, one I respect beyond most in this godforesaken business, but we are 2 different people, I'm no clone of his, he is not one of me, again, EDUCATION in noting what the differnces are between us.

Don't be a jerkoff & look for scandal where there aint none....& no, I aint trying to get everyone to back me & laugh at your ass because I DO defend myself when someone makes silly references, if this happens it's because you simply are making a jackass of yourself by unnecessarily trying to gain attention on here...I've come to look past your annoying negativities but I have no qualms about telling someone who'll never approve of me anyway that I too don't approve of you.

Whoops...thanks for that, i stand corrected....I wasn't thinking, you're absolutely right!!!

I should have said 12 'half steps' not whole....it is 8 whole steps between octaves.

But the Bowzer reference was not about the high notes, just songs overall....try singing Wheel In The Sky or I'll Be Alright an octave lower....ha ha, sounds like Barry White!!

Thanks for theory correction tho' :)

In Steve Perry's defense he did shake hands and converse, however briefly, w/ Augeri at the WOF.
Wasn't a creep that day, by all accounts, and should be said.
