Journey To Europe....

Postby Saint John » Mon Dec 18, 2006 3:57 pm

I noticed that Journey plays 16 shows in 24 days. Moreover, they play 3 nights in a row 3 times in a 24 day span, not to mention 6 of the first 7 nights. That's quite a rough schedule considering it will be after a long layoff. Hasn't this band's management learned anything from the last fiasco? Jeff has a great voice, but singing someone else's material, especially Perry's, is just not easy. Journey simply has shitty management that only cares about money.

It was actually worse when originally scheduled. This is an amendment, if you can believe that.

Jeff won't put up with that shit. He will simply say not 3 nights in a row too often.

I mean, WTF? The band is loaded with money. Stay an extra night between gigs and enjoy Europe. Obviously you're gonna play a few back to back shows, but 6 out of the first 7 days is complete bullshit.

st. john, man i agree with that!! andrew needs that job! .......i dont sing,, but i wonder if its ok to sing 3 days in a row ect. for a pro like soto when hes really singing a little less than an hour each night,, 2 solos, and deen sings 2...jeremey is singing these tunes , 3 sets.. not 3 days in a row i know..

That's what I was saying. They will get together and rehearse, but I see your point. Too much singing in a week....and lest we not forget, these won't be the 1:20 min GH hits show like the DL tour was, but a longer true Journey set.

Deen is simply gonna HAVE to sing 4-5 songs per night.

Your are right about Jeff singing Faithfully and OA. Jeff sang the whole set in July at Nissan Pavilion. Very good on these songs.

You would think that they did. However, look at the Euro 2007 dates. They play 6 of the first 7 nights. THAT should be good for Jeff's voice. What's more, they play 16 gigs in 24 nights and 3 nights in a row three times. Greed...plain and simple. I know they'll fire back with "scheduling conflicts" but we know that's all bullshit.

How do we know it's greed & not some bad decision by management or whomever does the booking based on demand over there? I doubt the guys in the band sit down & talk about which dates they want to do. I'm sure management says "a UK tour in March" & they go "ok". Next thing they know, the dates are booked & they're told where to be on what day. By then, it's probably too late to object to the multi-dates too close together. I don't know this for sure, just speculating.

I meant greed by management not the band. However, Neal has been touring for 40 years. He isn't new to this and SHOULD have a voice in management decisions considering what happened last tour. It seems that nothing has changed. Poor decision after poor decision.

As good as JSS is, I don't think they should be doing two nights in a row all that often, much less three consecutive shows.

What do singers do when on a schedule like that to keep their voices intact? I've read not talking at all, but how can they stand that? lol

I'm NOT an expert by any means but there are a few things I've read. First, a lot of water. Second, proper technique when singing. Also, proper rest and no alcohol. A "warm up" session before shows. Nora would be the resident expert and Jeremey too.

I would love to hear about "warm ups" too, seems like every singer has their own way of doing so. :)

Right, no alcohol or caffeine. Caffeine is probably worse than alcohol, actually, because it is a diuretic, i.e, it dries out the body to some degree. Ever drink a ton of caffeine when you're not used to having so much? I do and I really notice how dry my mouth and throat feel.

Also, room temperature drinks, such as decaffeinated, warm tea are usually recommended also. Cold or hot drinks can be a problem.

Some singers even speak not at all or minimally the day of a show until right before the show starts, at which point they can begin to warm up their voices.

As far as booking goes, European promoters (like most promoters) are not about wasting time and paying to have band and crew out on the road for too many nights when money isn't coming in. This is especially true when the income isn't cushioned by playing huge arenas, which can help fund more "travel days". Bands & management are aware of this, and try to keep these rough weeks minimized by getting in and out of Europe quickly. Besides, most bands don't want to be out on the road longer than they have to, so they cover as many markets as quickly as they can, in a long run home.

As far as vocalists, Jeff is one of the strongest I've heard, and no doubt 20+ years of experience will hold him in good stead for a typically strenuous tour schedule. Vocal rest on non-performance days is always a good idea, however, day of show, the chords need to warm up. No alcohol and limited or no caffeine are also good ideas. Some vocalists have "coctail" remedies that keep their chords in shape - teas with honey, etc. Avoiding cold air in the lungs, and colds from friends and fans, also tend to be high priorities. Good rule of thumb, the singer in the band is the guy wearing the scarf when the rest of the band seems to think it's warm enough not to.

Agree, very strong vocals........I was quite surprised after watching the Queen dvd that he sounded just as good at the end of the 2 hour concert as he did at the beginning (if not better)......considering singing Mercury songs for 2 hours can't be easy on the pipes......same as singing Perry songs, the guy's definately got his work cut out for him. :D
