Bands don't just exist to support the sports teams.

Yes they do. They sure as Hell don't exist to go on fucking tour.

Well yeah Dean, they sort of do. They have a whole schedule of competitions of their own. The halftime shows are really nothing more than practice for those, and the fight song bullshit during the games is mostly just a pain in the ass to them.

Wrong.

If not for the football team, the band would have NO revenue. I have never seen the fuckin trumpet and tuba players washing cars. They gravy train the sports teams. The sports teams bring in the Goddamned money.

Not when I was in school. We did all our own fundraising and didn't get squat from the football team or any other sports-related activity. We organized two huge craft fairs every year, sold everything under the sun, and still had to fork over the cash when necessary for trips if we needed to. I'm not down on the sports teams - they definitely have their purpose, but the band, to me at least, was all about learning about music and performance. The previous post was right - the halftime shows were practice for the competitions, and playing at the basketball games was a pain in the ass. The concert band competitions were the best, though.

Well that might be the way it is where you live, but not here. The bands do all the fund raising. The sports teams absolutely NEVER do any of that. There has never been a car wash, bake sale or anything that I can think of by any HS sports team in this area or the midwest. It's always been the band that does it. Different cultural area I guess.

Well, on one of our trips we tied a guy up in his pajamas and covered him in shaving cream. Does that count as trouble?

That was really the only incident that I can remember like that. There was a time when a girl got locked out of her hotel room by her roommates wearing just a towel, but seeing as she was one of the class hotties, no one really saw that as a problem. :D

Being in the band sucks. I have always thought that if you are in the "School Band" that meant you weren't good enough to play on the team. Now, I am sympathetic to you and your cause because I went to a major college and dig the fuck out of the band playing the fight song and other cool tunes. Even though I would never be in the Band, I do appreciate the work that goes into it, and do think the band should receive adequate funding.

Stop whining about it, and go over the principals head on this. Screw that bitch. If you aren't going to get funding, flatout either-

A) Go out there and do stupid antics like the Stanford University Band. These guys don't do all that marching in formation shit. They go out and do stupid shit. They perform politically incorrect stunts. At Oregon State during the spotted owl controversy, they went out and formed a chainsaw. At California Berkely, they pissed in the Cal endzone. Bottom line: They don't give a shit...and people love them. The Stanford fight song is All Right Now by Free( Paul Rodgers). This is the best college band in the Land.

B) Go out on the field and play Money by Pink Floyd. Play to the crowd, and let them know what is happening.

C) Get the local newspaper to write a story. Nothing like the power of the press. Go to a rival high school, and talk to their band members and see if the same shit happens over there. If it is different, then you have something to go to war with.

D) Show up in your uniforms and just sit in the stands. People will wonder what the Hell you are doing NOT playing. No money, no play.

E) Play the other teams fight song. If you only get their revenues for concessions, play their fight song.

I can guarantee you, a principal will cave to this.

Deano, disagreeing with you only that you think Stanford has the best band....

Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame bands would have a lot of say into that they are the greatest Marching bands in the land. OSU being the best. I mean
the Script Ohio is #1 and Michigan has the best fight song---And I hate Michigan!

Worst bands? Iowa State is in top 5 or maybe #1 and I went there. Same sheet music every year, I swear one more season of blood sweat and tears music... UGH!!!

Bands would not even be in play if it NOT for football... come to think of it, title nine would NOT be in play if college football was not around. no womens sports at all, no gymnastics, no softball, etc. Only sports would be playground stuff.

60.000-110,000 fans at football games...*most* not there to see the band, unless your team sucks... most there for fall Saturday all day party and the game itself.

people, WTF? I can't believe NO ONE has said this classic line yet...

"This one time, at band camp..."

Ok, seriously, if I HAVE to be for a moment. What the Principal is doing is wrong, Even IF sports bring in more money than the band does. ALL ACROSS THE U.S., school districts are taking away whole musical departments, saying that music isn't important in life. Ok, so Sports aren't either, but Fitness is (to an extent). But how many people do physical fitness without MUSIC? I was a lifer in school in the music department, I didn't go out for sports, not because I didn't like them, or because I liked music more, but I was smart enough to know that I wouldn't be in the SMALL percentage of people that would go to college on a scholarship.

MANY kids today are "bred" to be sports stars, often because of money, but also because their parents never fulfilled the dream to be a great athlete. Not too many people are "bred" to be in the High School marching band, they do it because (often times) they love it.

What the hell is my moral today? Ah, the hell with it. I fell better anyway.
Without ego, we have no pride in what we are saying.

Exactly!! It's actually something you can DO the rest of your life. Eventually, your body will wear out, but you can always play music. Bands have their own set of competitions...a season just like sports. Plus bands actually get to travel across the county to inaugurations and national parades. Since my brother became the band director at his school in 1998, they have been in the Rose Bowl Parade, The Fiesta Bowl Parade, the Macy's Day parade and just this last Thanksgiving in the Hollywood Bowl Parade.

Dude, I hate all the marching bands...Fuck that.

Oh and Michigan does NOT have the best fight song.

Go google Stanford University Band. They wear red shirts, straw hats, and DON'T March. It's a cluster fuck. They play hammered drunk and drink and smoke weed all day in the stands and still deliver great tunes.

I am just saying they are different and clearly very good.

The best band in America is definitely Southern University or Grambling State. They are all black, and definitely have a serious rythm about them.

No dickless wonder, you are wrong. Every publication and poll puts the Whining Irish number one in at least one thing....Fight Song.

Penn State's got the most distinguished unis in the country.
PERIOD.
Illini, San Juan back me up on this.

Granted it hasn't helped them WIN in The Big House in 10 years, but the Refigans have seen to that the last 2 times out at that hell hole.

Gotta admit, I'm not a big fight song guy.
I know that damn Bog Irish hick song and that's it.

team and unit knicknames, college and pro are more my pint of beer.

Ask me who the Blackshirts are and I'll rip off Nebraska's defense unconsciously.

Fight song, you mean "Don't Stop (thinking about tomorrow)" That's a good song, but it's not a fight song. What else do they play? other than "Tusk"?

F USC.

The every time Penn State used to wax them in the Kickoff Classic, the Rosebowl would be 1/2 empty the next week. The front running fans wreck the tradition in that den of thieves out there.

Same difference to me anyway, twice the Paternos cleaned their plows in the KO Classic (fans thought chances of MNC were ruined right there the place was a mausaleum until they won about 5 games each time). Candy ass West Coast Pac 10....
