Shania - I love "Queen of the Reich" - and it's definitely a metal classic. But Tate's pompous falsetto never fails to raise a smile. I mean...I like it but only in an ironic kind of a way. I can't take him seriously. I just can't.

Most of Tate's vocals weren't falsetto, except possibly some of the very highest notes.

Why stop there, Knox?

Because I didn't care for his voice after 82, except for songs like Strung Out, Foolish Heart, It's Just The Rain, and Can't Tame The Lion. I don't care for the album Frontiers at all, nor do I like Strange Medicine.

I thought he sounded awful on the Memphis clips on YouTube as well.

I don't understand the question, unless you are trying to corner me as a "Perry can do no wrong" person - which I am not.

Care to elaborate?

I'm not trying to corner you into anything. As a fan who thinks Perry's best vocal performances were after 1982 I was just curious.

What don't you like about Frontiers? Was it the production? Or the songs?

Maybe not - but he is always preposterous on some level.

He will admit that, in the early days, he would show off on occasion but he certainly developed his own style and came into his own on "Operation: Mindcrime" in my opinion, and possibly on "Rage for Order". His lower range is what sets him apart from a singer like Rob Halford, in my opinion. Very unique.

I agree with Wings.

I voted "Other."

Elvis Presley is not on this list?
Bruce?

Faulty list.

Sorry Matthew, I got a little defensive there.

Once Perry lost his smooth, bell-like tone I didn't appreciate his voice as much. He was still dead-on pitch perfect, but I prefer the higher, smoother pitch than the lower, rougher one.

Frontiers was TOO 80's for me. From the computer inspired song Frontiers to Troubled Child and Back Talk, I think this is the least "Journey" album Journey ever did.

Perry's hair cut, changed vocal tone, and the songs all diminish the Journey Package for me.

Now, had they included Only The Young and Ask The Lonely, and kept the Scarab, it might be a different story.

Journey definitely went a different direction on that album, and most people LOVE it. I am just not one of them. It hasn't been in my cd player in about 15 years.

Oh, I don't like ROR much, either.

Once again, my aplogies for snapping at you. My bad. :?

Why does that shock you? His voice is certainly more masculine-sounding than Perry's, for instance. I love Perry's voice more than Jamison's but there's nothing really shocking about that statement. Or perhaps you're just shocked that he likes Jamison's voice more than Perry's?

Agree and I think it was the "masculine" part that got her. This is the reason my favorite Perry vox are from '83 on, particularly on FTLOSM and TBF.

From the boots I've heard, I enjoy Perry's vocals more on the FTLOSM tour than most of what I've heard from the ROR tour and even much of the "Frontiers" tour.

 For a second I thought the thread was going to go south...It hope it stays as Voices of Rock not Voices of Fock.

So Perry rules.I guess it's not because the Poll's on the Journey board either...
Then Jamison, folowed by a tie between Mercury and Rodgers...Which made me think that Queen is presently doing the right thing.

"Others" get some votes:Tony Martin,JSS,Elvis...All great.
Elvis is not even a singer anymore,I see him as a unique phenomenon,he is a culture by himself.

There's still room for more votes...No genre categorizing, just the most powerful impression that one of those voices left on each of you.

It would have been more interesting if Perry wasn't in the poll, cuz we all know most if not all people here like him the most.

Remove Perry and my vote would have been for Gramm

Crossed my mind to do a Perry-less poll...but it lasted just for half a second.

I dunno,it might have been interesting but not necessarily fair.
Maybe that's another type of Poll which could be done.

I would have to split my vote between Rodgers and Jamison.

Yeah, remove Perry would be fairer as its stacked for him here.

At the risk of the wrath of the Loons, I voted for the Voice of Rock, Mr Glenn Hughes.

Before frothing at the mouth, if any of you have never seen this guy or heard the depth and range of the material he can do, from the heaviest metal with Sabbath and Iommi he can out-black any soul singer worth a bean.

Plus, and most importantly NO one, sorry, NO FUCKER can scream like Hughes. He is 54 now, not much less than Perry and I saw him in a 200 capacity small club, very intimate and close up last year; jaw dropping. Like having God himself singing 'Mistreated' in your living room.

It gets no better...

Ok, insults away!

He's very very good isn't he?
But he loses Brownie points with me because I think he KNOWS he's good. And I don't like big heads.

And Shania, this was a toughie. So many great voices on that list.
Had Steve Perry not been on the list I really would have struggled to pick just one.

I had to go with Diamond Dave for the whole package, because a Perry vote was too obvious. I'm old enough to have seen DLR five times with VH, so I vote from experience, not reputation (which can be sullied over time). We all know Steve is the man, in the end.

If you remove Perry from this list the the most recognizable voice of rock in the last thirty years in my opinion has got to be Freddy Mercury. One of Queens songs comes on the radio and with the first vocal note you know exactly who it is.
