What is it about singers?

Postby NealIsGod » Fri Jun 15, 2007 10:19 pm

Why do so many of the bands we love have trouble with singers? Think about it...

Journey
Van Halen
Styx
Survivor
GnR

I am sure there are many others. But why is the lead vocal of classic rock bands such a high turnover job? Not just in Journey, but in general?

Ego...Lead singers usually have an ego to some degree and I think that they other guys in the band are often jealous that the singer gets more of the limelight than the other guys in the band.

Well, to me it is more like the singers have trouble with the band. Maybe it has something to do with ego.

Good question NIG..

Maybe it's...
Too much pressure from the band or Mgmt?

Also, the singers get too much credit when things go well and too much blame when things go wrong.

Control issues. Band's are generally recognized by their lead singers, unless the guitar player IS the lead singer. Seems like the guitar players and the lead singers are always at odds for control. The one with the best leadership ability should have control, period. In Journey's case....it ain't the Fro.

The best ever. Bar none. There came a point when he realized he was getting older and his voice needed to be cared for. He skipped Meet and Greets. He isolated himself from the band after shows, choosing not to follow Neal on his perpetual "Girls Gone Wild" odyssies. Why? For US, for his craft and out of love and respect for music....something the two dipshits running the show now know nothing about. Thank you Steve Perry. You will always be THE best. And no matter what the future brings for Journey, if anything, I will NEVER let the songs you were a part of be tarnished by these two greedy, classless motherfuckers. I simply won't let them do that. Reaching for Frontiers right now. Ahh, the good old days.

What about ROR? Perry wasn't perfect, and had an ego on him big time. He fired half the band trying to turn it into R&B.

It's not all bunnies & kittens here now. :D

I'd say the "direction" he took ROR musically with rubbish like Positive Touch
was horrible but his 'voice' was still perfect...
And that was a VERY great live show...
Too bad that tour ended prematurely.

1) I LOVE ROR.
2) He was at least man enough to admit that if he "could do it all over again" he wouldn't have fired them.
3) Your "R&B" comment is simply ridiculous.
4 His "ego" kept the shows live, the music sincere and fed the band's fire. Since that "ego" left, how well have they done?

Ok...
But it's not just "Singers"...

What is it about "Singers and their Guitar Players" not getting along???

Just look at the bands you listed initially:
DLR/Hagar and EVH
Axl and Slash
DeYoung and Shaw
Perry/Augeri/Jeff and Napolean Dynamite

then add these few...
Stephen Tyler and Perry had their fallouts
Dokken and Lynch
Pearcy and DeMartini
Stapp and Tremonti
Hetfield and Mustaine
Bon Jovi and Sambora
Amy Lee and EVERYBODY in her band

YES SIR!! :P

I think it's pretty much what Dave has said. In addition to that I'd say that the nature of the Melodic Rock genre with the soaring vocals and instrumental solos makes for ego problems between the musicians and the vocalists. They all think they're, or that they should be, the stars of the band. The frontman usually gets blamed for the ego problems simply because he is usually the real star of the band and the easiest target.

That movie Almost Famous had a pretty good example of that.

Seems like, at least in this situation, some members of the band who are not the singer, are simply jealous of the recognition he gets. I'll bet that at least half of the folks who go to Journey concerts don't even know the names Schon and Cain.

Singers build an ego.In some cases that comes with a desire to control and decide.
Then the spotlight shines brighter on the singers;compared to the other members, the lead singer signs more autographs, gives more interviews and receives more attention anywhere he goes. His name is remembered.

In the end,the singer becomes the band's image...At that point the other members get jealous. That's when the problems start.

But this can't be the only reason why bands and singers get in trouble...There's also the money, the women, the managers, the rumors...
Each band has it's own unique story with their singers.

No; seriously....um....I think it's because Lead Singers are the ones front & center, who communicate the words of the song, are the emotional "tie", if you will, to how the song comes across...SO, that means standing in the "crosshairs".

Generally speaking, bands are LOADED w/ ego's all the way around. The one's that are usually causing all the tension are the singer's & the guitarist's...especially in Rock bands...they're competing for the limelight..."It's MY voice they want to hear!"..."No, it's MY solo's they want to hear!"...they're usually the one's fighting over who "makes" the band...inevitably, one wants to go one way and one wants to go another...they both want control...

Edward nailed it when he coined the term L.S.D. Lead Singer's Disease.

The catch is, some guitarists like him and Frankie Sullivan have a different strain of the disease.

Wanted to echo your sentiments about class...I had the privilege of meeting Jeff at a Soul Sirkus show in Virginia (where there were maybe 30 people in attendance) last year, and the guy is nothing short of amazing personally and professionally. Whether he performs in front of 30,000 or 30, he hangs it out every night. He also took time to chat it up with some of the fellas a bit and have a little Grey Goose. That man knows where his bread is buttered and is appreciative of the fans. Others in Journey should take notice....
