HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED....

Postby Món » Thu Jul 05, 2007 6:59 am

...how Journey lacks of interaction between band members in a live situation?

I mean, the music has always kicked ass, but they seldom glance at each other when performing...

I saw them 3 times with Augeri, and have seen lots of gigs with Perry and JSS on video, and it's the same.

2 of the SA gigs were closers with bands like Styx, REO and Bad Company, and they clearly had a hard time trying to follow these acts.

Absent from each other....

Any thoughts? :)

Out of the 3 (Perry, Augeri, JSS)....IMO JSS interacted the most. He interacted with Neal and especially Ross and Deen on stage. Perry seemed to interact most with Neal. And I can't really say with Augeri, I haven't seen as much footage of him as I have of the other 2.

I meant the rest of them. Journey minus the singer, that is.

Of course, the singer has to interact with the rest of the band.

JSS interacted with the band the most. SA did at times, but more with the crowd. From 2005 on Friga, Neal and Steve didnt even look at each other. Neal wore his shades and just stood there, and Friga look like he just ate a turd. At the beginning of the 2006 tour they look they didnt want to be there From what was going on I wouldnt have wanted to either

Perry also interacted with Smitty a lot. In one interview, Perry stated that he felt that Smitty was the "conductor"

A few thoughts on this. I don't think Schon and Cain interact with any of the singers since Perry because seeing anyone else sing probably makes them want to cry. Also, the fact that Cain could never even fake interaction with JSS tells me he couldn't wait to can him. After of course they used him to cash their checks from the European tour.

I agree with ya, he was always standing back by the drums or facing him during guitar solos, etc.

I think it's more of a job to them anymore. I seen them a couple of years back with REO, Styx and Journey. If I remember right Journey closed each night. Anyhow, Cronin wouldn't shut his mouth long enough to sing and Styx were a better band than Journey that night. I'm not a big Styx fan but they were better than Journey that night.

The best Augeri interaction I've seen is when he does the painful looking dive onto the Whale on the Vegas DVD. If I were Cain, I'd still be kicking his ass for doing that to my piano. Probably knocked it back a few inches while he was playing too.

I love the interaction in the Houston '81 DVD. The guys actually look like they're loving the music they play, and having a good time performing.

JOURNEY had a "hard time" following REO, Styx, and Bad Company. Pure bullshit. I went to multiple shows on those tours. Styx, on a good night, perhaps...REO? Not in the same ballpark, talent-wise or energy-wise. Bad Company? Are you serious? They're boring as hell live. When Diamond Dave opened for them in '98, he brought the house down, and then the curtain goes up and BadCo...are sitting on stools with acoustic guitars? They have some good songs, but they can't even hold Journey's jock straps. Styx could give them a run for the money with DDY, but even Augieri Journey was clearly superior to these other three bands. JSS Journey blew them right out of the water.

Re: the BadCo comments:

The tour with DLR was in 1999, not 1998. And Roth was lucky as hell to even get that gig. Based on the show on that tour I saw in San Diego in August, the best thing about Roth's set was the fact that he had recently hired former Atomic Punks guitarist Bart Walsh to recreate Eddie's magic...Roth's singing was pretty good, but declined seriously from that point on to what it is now: absolute shit.

Put it this way...anyone stupid enough to buy a ticket to the (rumored) upcoming Van Halen "reunion" tour deserves whatever happens, lol.

And re: BadCo sitting on stools? No stools were on stage at any point that night. Seeing the all-original BadCo lineup made the San Diego crowd forget Roth's set quicker than I can spit. They rocked. Period. "Boring" is a word that has no place in describing the band's set that night.

At least Schon knows enough to give Paul Rodgers, and his legacy, the credit it deserves.

I'm guessing you're maybe confused by having seen a show by the crap mid 80's-mid 90's Bad Company ripoff first fronted by Brian Howe, and then, later, Robert Hart.

No, John, I went to the show with five people, all of whom liked BadCo's music, and they WERE on stools, and the previously pumped-up audience sat through most of the show like slack-jawed yokels. It was like going from a Maserati to a Fiat. Just because I didn't remember the EXACT year doesn't mean my memory isn't 100% accurate...it is. At least 40% of the audience left by midway through BadCo's set. Perhaps they didn't sit on stools for the show YOU saw...that doesn't mean they didn't do it elsewhere.

That show was the epitome of interaction,action,energy,passion,delivery...you name it.Those 5 guys were really communicating among themselves and with the audience.

Almost half a paying audience was gone half-way through a set by headliners touring together for the first time in nearly twenty years?

I'm inclined to call a hearty bullshit on that one.

Sorry, Daniel...JMHO. I think you're exaggerating a bit.

Actually, the gig was this "Classic Rock Fest". It was at the Cricket Pavillion, in Phoenix. Some blues young gun opened, followed by Billy Squier (people still looking for their seats). Can this guy get any GAYER? Still, great performance. He honestly rocked.

Then Bad Co. Rodgers REALLY set the crowd on fire. I later understood why he got the Queen gig in the first place. NO STOOLS. Well, they used stools on "Do right by your woman" (Simon Kirk on acoustic guitar), but that was it.

Then Styx. I can't stand Gowan's voice, but it was a GREAT show. Funny as fuck, too. They were touring the Cyclorama album. I bought it the next day.

Then came Journey, and they DEFINITELY didn't get the crowd apreciation the former two acts got. Actually, you could see people leaving the place towards the end of their performance. Funny detail: Deen played the encore dressed as Sponge Bob.

The next year I saw Journey with an anonymous opening act in Tucson, and they just RAWKED.

And then again with REO, and Styx the year after. Cricket Pavillion in Phoenix, as well. And they ran with the same luck as the first example. Add to this that Jon was visibly PISSED during the whole performance.

Don't get me wrong. This was painful for me to watch. I love Journey. Or at least USED to love them.

About the topic of the thread, they just DON'T INTERACT AS A BAND. As stated, the singer has to do it, but they don't "rock out" to each other that much.

Again, that's what I saw. And I'm sorry I did. :|

Thanks for the info, Mon. I didn't realize that Journey joined that lineup (which toured in summer 2001) for any shows.

BTW, that "blues young gun" was a guy named Joe Stark.

I missed his set due to shitty traffic on the I-5 when I saw the tour in Irvine, California.
