They sucked in AC.

They were good when I saw them, but the crowd was electric. REALLY into it.

I know Jeremey. He is a great singer and a great guy. Had he been picked in 1998, I'd feel much better about things. If he gets the gig now, I wish him all the best. He can go live out his dream. I certainly don't blame him for chasing it.
That said, dumping Jeff was the epitome of blatant stupidity. Assine and classless. All the live reviews were glowing. They still had Deen to sing certain songs if they wanted something a little closer to the Perry vocal. But for fucks sake, Jeff was really channeling Perry (hate that term, but it applies) later on in the tour. Jeff can sing anything and was completely accepted by the crowds on the tour.
Journey have disgraced themselves, not just by their poor judgement, but even moreso by the way it was all handled. Jeff is a stand up guy and just a good person. The stench of this mess will not go away anytime soon.

Great post Ed. I think that pretty well describes what most of us feel.
I think Jeremey is an amazing singer and a really great guy, and I wish he wasn't having to try and prove himself under these conditions, but we all just love Jeff so much that it puts us between the old rock and hard place. We don't want to support Journey after what they did to our JSS, but we don't want to hurt our friend Jeremey.![]()

I think when a band is in this situation as Journey is currently, you have to make a choice; find a person who looks and sounds like the original, or find someone who has his/her own style that can put on a solid performance with the classics but take the music and the band in a new sound and direction. I think Journey had made the RIGHT decision when they implemented JSS because he could sing the hell out of the classics but offer a new and fresh sound just as Hagar did with Van Halen with the new material. And with Hagar, he really could not do an acceptable job with the classics like JSS can with Journey's back catalog. In Van Halen's case, as disfunctional as they are understood that there is only one David Lee Roth. Journey should do the same, they need to understand that Steve Perry is the ONLY one that is Steve Perry and that no matter who they choose, the performance will always be an immitation and it will never sound like classic Journey because Perry was also a very sigificant influence on songwriting and production. In the case of JSS, he sang the songs and preserved the integrity of the songs, but did not try to immitate them. With JSS, because he has songwriting skills could have been a very interesting final product with regards to new material. Auguri, had a similiar tonal quality to Perry but sounded unique on his own and offered a different sound to the new material but until the most recent record was not allowed to participate in the song writing. But frankly some of the best tunes on the last album involved Augeri's songwriting skills IMHO. Jon and Neal by themselves really are not very good in the songwriting department IMHO, they have some good ideas, but without the calabiration with a third party there ideas tend to come accross undeveloped or unfinished, this is what Perry had brought to the table which is why as a group they were so good.
In terms of Jeremy being in the band, I wish him the best of luck if he is selected as I don't think anybody could say they would turn down such an opportunity (except for maybe Daughtry). At the same time I would encourage Jeremy, if selected to use his fame and increased paycheck wisely. Keep your current life as it is and save your $$ for the day you get mishandled like your predecessors. If you do that you will come out smelling like a rose no matter what, but if you change your life style to match your new checks you could very well end up holding the bag...

That's no slur on JSS.
I love Journey and I can't get into that song, and it's not for lack of trying. Like a lot of TBF, there are a great deal of spectacular individual parts and even hooks that all lead up to me going...

A decided lack of tension.

Augeri had writing credits on every album starting with 'Arrival'.
He may have had a larger degree of creative freedom on 'Generations', but I think, if anything, it was to the albums' detriment.
The two solo songs on the disc, "Butterfly" and "Believe", are piss-poor (and I'm a big fan of Tall Stories and Shine).
The Augeri/Schon composition "Beyond the Clouds", now THAT, on the other hand, is worthy of praising.Jon and Neal by themselves really are not very good in the songwriting department IMHO, they have some good ideas, but without the calabiration with a third party there ideas tend to come accross undeveloped or unfinished
I agree.
However, that certain elusive magical third ingredient is not Steve Augeri.
At least not from what I can tell.
In fact, many of the best songs in the post-Perry era were co-written by Jack Blades.
Its in this precise area where I think Jeff would've proved a considerable asset.

Journey lit it up in AC. Dean says the next night in Boston was the best he has ever seen them.
