Geoff Tate Audition

Postby mick » Wed Oct 24, 2007 11:27 pm

I heard somewhere that when Geoff tried out for Journey that they wrote a song or two. Is this true and has anyone ever heard these tracks?

I'd read this too -- the way I remember it, the article said he was basically offered the job, but then Queensryche decided to continue and he made that choice. Not horribly long ago I commented on it on another message board, but can't find the post, and no way to tell if the article was quoting Tate as saying that, or if they just wrote it up that way.

Here is from Andrew's interview with Steve Augeri, though:

Oh wow! So there's that many demos sitting out there.
And if I may say so, there were some songs that were left off the record that I really wish had gotten onto the record. In fact, there's a song that the guys wrote with Geoff Tate.

Oh really!?
Yeah. That was absolutely amazing. Just amazing. The week that I went out to audition, we recorded four Journey songs and we recorded about four new songs. And one of them was a song they had written with Geoff and one other was "Signs of Life". In fact that was the very first song out of the bag as a Journey song. And it wound up making the record. So it has some staying power.

Neal Schon interview(Geoff Tate/John West/Steve Augeri)

Postby jwarr » Thu Oct 25, 2007 3:08 am

I googled Neal Schon(John West)-Found an interview where he talks about Geoff Tate auditioning, writing a cool song w/ him. John West(Who I wished got the gig)& Steve Augeri/Arrival album.

I heard Geoff Tate sounded very WEIRD singing Journey. I suppose that makes sense....his voice is SOOO far removed from Perry in tone it's not even close...but that doesn't take away from the fact that Tate is one of the PREMIER vocalists out there...just not for Journey songs.

The story I recall was that Schon and Tate did indeed write a couple tunes together, but that the tunes came out sounding nothing like Journey. I guess this may also apply to the way Geoff sounded on some of the back catalog as mentioned above.

I don't recall hearing that he was ever actually offered the job though.

IMO, even if it didn't sound like the "old" Journey, I think it would have been really interesting seeing what kind of success this band might have had when bringing in some ryche fans and unting them with the Journey fans who chose to continue to follow the band. Another missed opportunity for this band in my opinion.

Always wondered if Geoff Tate didn't have something to do with 'Walking Away From The Edge'. I could hear him doing that as a Q'ryche song.

Now that you mention it, that song and Queensryche's "Someone Else?" have very similar themes. Both great songs.

It has been confirmed to me from multiple sources that Tate was involved in the writing sessions for most of the RED 13 material but went uncredited.

Exactly my suspicion on WAFTE...although it must have been written, pieces of it at least, well before Arrival...unless you're suggesting that Tate came back to work with Augeri & Journey on Red 13?

It'd be cool to hear/read an interview with GT about his time with Journey.

Tate would've killed his voice just like Augeri...he's lost a lot of his upper range in the last few years, just from getting older. Still one of the best hard rock/metal singers of all time, but he never would've made it in Journey as far as singing the old stuff. A Tate/Journey writing collaboration would've been really interesting though.
