ST. PETERSBURG (Bay News 9) -- Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel has died at the age 69, according to his website.

His granddaughter, Krysten Knievel, confirmed the death.

Knievel was transported to Northside Hospital around 1:20 p.m. Friday for breathing problems.

He had been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs.

He had undergone a liver transplant in 1999 after nearly dying of hepatitis C, likely contracted through a blood transfusion after one of his bone-shattering spills.

His death comes just two days after it was announced that he and rapper Kanye West had settled a federal lawsuit over the use of Knievel's trademarked image in a popular West music video.

His exploits made him an international icon in the 1970s.

He lived in the Feather Sound area of Pinellas County.

Yikes! I'd just read a few days ago about his making peace w/Kanye West. Totally unexpected. You know they say celebs often die in threes... I know it's coincidence, but it does seem that way. First Kevin Dubrow, and now Evel Knievel. I hope it stops there for now.

When I was a kid, I had all the Evel Knievel toys, including the Snake River cycle. I remember reading a bit not terribly long ago about some kid that met him a few years back, who admirably described him as "the crustiest man I've ever met." :P The dude said he had a cane with a screw off handle that he kept whiskey or something in... haha!

Really sad, and I'll miss him...

Dude, that sucks. I loved watching him when I was a kid. He was the reason I started riding when I was a kid. He was cool as shit with red, white and blue. And the dude had balls. He got hosed in a business deal once and beat the shit out of the guy for it with a baseball bat. It cost him 6 months in jail but according to him, it was worth it. Rock on brother and my God rest your soul. RIP Evel Knievel ... :(

One of my childhood idols. I had a red, white, and blue bike and I built a wooden ramp to jump the curb with to be like him. Only I wasn't.
