I remember that one because my mother's friend was going to see it and she had stopped over at our house on her way there to tell us about it. She was talking about how wild the band was and that no one knows their true identity becasue they never are seen in public without their makeup on. That was true because about a year later, the big tabloid news was that they had a picture of them without their makeup on. My friend was a big fan of theirs and so we walked a half mile to the closest drug store to check out the National Enquirer (or one of those trash papers) that had the photo. I still remember my friend (the biggest KISS fan I ever had known to this day) saying as he was studying the photo: "they are some ugly saps." Sure, it must not have been their better photo shoot, as I can recall, they all had some serious acne problems, but thats to expect, black heads, discolored lumps, half pinched zits, craters and all, when they're wearing makeup so much.

Anyone remember "Kiss meets the phantom of the park"? I remember seeing it when I was young, and believing they really had those powers! LOL!!! They were the coolest people on the planet! Of course, back then I was a Michael Jackson fan too!

First Show

Postby epresley » Tue Dec 04, 2007 7:39 am

First show, in '82 I think, was Molly Hatchet and April Wine in Lubbock, Texas. One week later, Kansas and Loverboy in Amarillo, Texas. Both shows hooked me forever........................

I've seen April Wine a few times, never saw Molly Hatchet. That would have been a good double bill. :)

First concert w/o any family members was Bon Jovi in '89 with some new band named Skid Row.

Who, Journey or Kansas? I saw Kansas 13 years ago, and (Can't remember his name) the lead singer/keyboardist said during and after the show, that the band gets no chance at success because the fans simply won't buy the new music.

He made a complete ass of himself that night! He basically said that the reason the band was playing for peanuts in a place like that was because the record companies wouldn't push the music, and that fans weren't BUYING the music. I remember thinking "What an asshole?!!". I'm still a huge fan regardless of that night, BUT THAT'S NO WAY TO TREAT FANS WHO PAID TO SEE YOUR SHOW!

I am talking about Kansas.

Steve Walsh was the frontman back then and he would admit that he was an ass many times over. He was still on drugs at the time and finally gave them up in the late 90s.

Thanks man,

I forgot his name. I think he's an incredible talent! His fingers do shit on that keyboard that mine can't even begin to comprehend! LOL!!! I'm glad to hear he got clean if he was on drugs. They'll ruin a life in the blink of an eye.

They were absolutely incredible when I saw them (Other then the ranting and raving!). They played pretty much every cool song they ever wrote that night! I was blown away.

Their problem seems to be that many of their songs are obscure and not too radio friendly. I love them either way...Great band!

They're playing even more obscure songs nowadays because the hardcore fans typically make up a good portion of the audience. I've seen them 6 or 7 times and they've been spot on each time. Too bad the drugs really did a number on Walsh's voice because he was right up there with Perry in his prime, in my opinion.

My first concert was Aerosmith on the Permanent Vacation tour in '87.

First Journey concert was in '98 with Augeri. I was going to go see the ROR show in '86, but something family-related came up and I couldn't go. You can't imagine how much I regret missing that one!

Sigh.... I think it was the Osmonds at the Garden State Arts Center in Jersey. I was very young -- too young to realize that my dad and brother were only pretending to be sick. I went with my mom, sisters and some friends of theirs. Not even tall enough to see much from the lawn seats. Once in a while I caught a glimpse of the show. First real concert was Rush during Exit Stage Left tour.

BOSTON

Spring of 1979 at the Convention Center in San Antonio

Thick haze of pot smoke and joints being lighted and passed everywhere.

Great first concert...I miss the 70's...sigh.

Yes! In fact if you have The Beatles bubble gum cards there is one with a girl up on the shoulders of John, Paul and Ringo that young girl is yours truly. The only reason George is not in the picture is he was home at The Plaza Hotel in NYC with the flu. The photo was taken across the street in Central Park. My R%R history goes way back.....
