Call me crazy, but most old Survivor stuff was pretty mellow in comparison to other 80's stuff. How can they possibly get any mellower without being outright easy listening?

I disagree, easy listening is a whole different thing. Sure this new album has a lot of ballads..

Trust me though i've heard slower ballads from some of the other bands' new material. Also, they can still rock the socks off of me and especially those who see them in concert. I guess it just depends on one's opinion on the genre "easy listening". Nice review though. Did you check out the review in the Melodic Rock Fanzine? it was pretty good too. (of course a die hard fan as myself will like "anything" by the band :P

Well ofcourse you disagree. Just have to take a look at your avatar and signature ;)

Personally, to me Survivor have always been easy listening. Same as any AOR group. Survivor rock as much as any great band from back in the day (Journey, Toto, Foriegner, and suprisingly Richard Marx who also rocks pretty hard at concerts) still on the radio these guys are easy listening to me.

Well, I am happy that the band hasn't tried to be modern because most of todays "modern" rock is mostly heavy metal and the other music today is well mostly rap. I'd hate to see Jamo wearing some bling bling and Frankie rapping....lol

The simple fact is: What ROCKED back then seems very soft today.

It suprises me how many 80s artists have changed genre's all together.. has anyone heard Debbie Gibson lately? she's turned into a rap artist.. :P
Just think about it, if u put Survivor up against a "modern day rock" band it does sound softer.. it's the generation gaps.. Most bands today rely heavily on half-naked women on music videos, tons of vulgar language and a bunch of other stuff...

Basically, what rocked then, sucks now for ALOT of people, especially the new generation of rockers... For example, has anyone heard Green Day's "remake" of EOTT? It's a joke, making fun of a legand. I remember a press release a few months back from some EMO band that stated "the reason that the old style sucks so much, it had no balls.". ... And don't get me started with MTV today... grr... What do u all think?

Actually after listening to the new LOVERBOY album I don't buy what rocked yesterday is soft today. Just Getting Started make no mistake is in your face 80's rock with a few ballads! I have no doubt these guy can rock with anyone. Survivor can make the same quality of album with Robin on leads. Robin's BUSINESS AS USUAL convinces me that he and Frankie can put out something that will blow away REACH.

For a second I thought Survivor shocked the hell out of us by releasing something new that Andrew had just reviewed.

FMS, REACH, NEVERTHELESS, TALKIN' BOUT lOVE, GIMME THE WORD are hardly easy listening. Listen REACH is not my favorite album but it's far from light fare.

Good to hear from you Marcel. Reach is my least favorite Survivor album but I can't understand why people are trashing it. The PRODUCTION is rock solid! It sounds great. I think it will be an album that people will appreciate in time. I wish it was the comeback that LOVERBOY'S new one is. Check it out Marcel.

Reach isn't a bad record. However, I think the TIME and delay of getting it out spoils what it could have been, more than anything else. Let me explain: We've been exposed to so many others stuff, while waiting for it and mired with all the politics that has been going on in the Survivor camp. The solution would be listening to it without prejudice would be the best bet to accepting it more. And for that TIME would be the healer,IMO. Ironic.

I'll see if I can get a hand on the new Loverboy record, although they've not been much my cup of tea. No harm broadening horizons though! 8)

Hey Marcel,

You ain't kidding about the politics. Many on this board LOVED REACH, that is until FS and JJ parted ways. Then suddenly REACH became a rushed record with average songs. By the way Reach rushed? Gimme a break. I heard that both FMS and One More Chance were ready for the ULTIMATE SURVIVOR ALBUM IN 2004! So much for rushed. Marcel you should sample some of the audio cuts from New Loverboy. It's just solid melodicrock with an updated sound. I just wanted to use them as an example of what I expect from the next Survivor effort.

I have no doubt with Robin, we'll get an edgier Survivor. I'll keep my expectations under check. Survivor must sound like themselves most importantly! 8)

I like this Album in 2007 more than in 2006. Maybe the expectations were to big after 18 years without releasing anything.

I agree with the 85.
It's VERY solid.

Not the best but an effort that other bands would kill to have. It's better than Journey's generations that's for damn sure.

Survivor and Journey are pretty much in a dead even tie as my favorite band, as my screen name would suggest. In fact I have always felt a little more sentimental about Survivor, with them being more of the under-dogs of the two.

I do like Reach a lot, but it's my least favorite Survivor album. I'm much happier with Generations.

I never compare the first 3 Journey albums with the ones that came after them, I love them too, quite a bit actually, but their so different from the Perry and Augeri era that I don't compare them. I also do not compare live or compilation albums either. And the same goes for Dream After Dream.

But here's my list for the others......

#1 Frontiers
#2 Escape (almost tied with Frontiers)
#3 Departure
#4 Generations
#5 Infinity
#6 Trial By Fire
#7 Arival
#8 Raised On Radio
#9 Evolution

I'm not including Red 13 since it's a four song EP not a full album.
