OT: Loverboy, etc - Niagara Falls New Years Eve

This was an awesome show, better than most of the pop crap from Times Square.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf6WRk4vx3U

Loverboy - I was amazed how much better they look and sound than when I last saw them a couple of years ago, went out and bought the new CD the next day. Honeymoon Suite - only showed one song on the TV broadcast. Dennis DeYoung - sounded great.

Wish I'd taped it, but there are other clips on Youtube. Mostly amateur vids so far, but some quality clips from TV.

Loverboy's new CD is absolutely AWESOME. It as as good or better than ANYTHING they have done.

It would have been an awesome follow up to Get Luckey.

Funny thing is that the first time I saw Loverboy they opened for Journey at Reunion Areana in Dallas. I believe it was(1982) on Journey's Escape tour.

Mike Reno has NEVER sounded better, and he has some great material to work with on their new CD.

How right you are! This should be up for CD of the year. Absolutely top notch catchy tunes you can listen to over and over. Easy to remember the lyrics for some reason as well. I'm not much on remembering words to songs, but this CD just sticks in my head!

Mike Reno is the king. He's one of the great entertainers in the genre (despite his superfluous weight gain) and his voice is spot-on and fantastic. He actually penned all the tunes on the new record. VERY underrated musician...and a helluva guy. The whole band is awesome - Scotty was the best and will be forever missed - and they routinely spend an hour or two after each show talking to their fans. Hats off to 'em all.

Loverboy IS great but I'm not digging Just Getting Started that much, at least not yet.

Kudos to them for selling it for $8.82, though Journey take note.

$8.82? - not in Canada! Even the download's more than that (+ this tax and that tax, etc etc). Doesn't matter - I am diggin' it!

All the excellent reviews bumped my expectations up too much, I think. I love the first song, and like most of the others. It grew on me a little more as I listened to it, but just didn't seem to have very much staying power with me. I kept it in the player for about a week before moving on to something else.

Well it's WalMart only down here and though some think they're the devil they do a decent job of keeping the costs to buyer down.

I like well enough, it certainly rocks hard in enough places and Reno sounds very cool.

Yes, I think this happened to me too.

Haven't read a bad word about so that bumped it from my "will pick it up when i come across it" to "Will seek out a WalMart and get it asap" list.

It brings back much 80's nostalgia when I listen to it. Sounds like the best of the 80's stuff to me. Maybe that's why I love it so much, me being the old fart that I am!

I did the exact same thing, and actually went to 3 Wal Marts before it in one 20 miles out of town. People were saying "best melodic rock album of the year"... I was just expecting to be blown away. It is a good album, but the bar in these reviews was too high, I think. Same happened with me for "Superman Returns" -- first reviews were incredible. The main difference between the two is that I actually like the Loverboy CD, while "Superman Returns" sucked hard, even after a few viewings.

I live near the Falls. This concert was free to go too, I saw Collective Soul at it a few years ago, but it was really crowded and freezing outside. So I just stayed home and watched it on T.V. I was disappointed Honeymoon Suite only got to play New Girl Now, that is all they showed on T.V. anyway.

Van Halen free? I WISH! It was Dennis DeYoung, Honeymoon Suite and Loverboy. They had Foreigner last year and Collective Soul and The Trews the year before. I saw Loverboy and Glass Tiger free at it about 5 years ago.

I think Honeymoon Suite did more - there are other clips on YouTube but not very good quality. I was hoping to see more of them too.

hey yog.. the only problem is telling others.. for some reason .. Loverboy has become a laugh for folks that supposedly know good music.. i.e. Puddle of Mud type groups.. so when folks ask what your playing you say ..LB and they break out laughing.. they do the same with Journey as well.. good music is still hidden gems to the general public..

I know firsthand what you are saying. I told one of my coworkers that they should check out the new Loverboy CD and that it was the best they have ever done and they just snickered at me! Oh well, their loss!

I bought it for my wife for Christmas. To me, it sounds like they went for a mix of Loverboy and 90's boyband music. I am talking arrangements here. I didn;t care for more than two songs. A real sleeper.

It'd be kinda cool to see these guys open for Journey again. When was that? Fall '81, I think.
Btw, when did Tad Martin (All My Children) start singing for the band?

Thanks for posting that Triple S. I didn't see that New Years Eve. I like Loverboy, but was more of a Honeymoon Suite fan. Just checked out a clip from the same New Years show of Honeymoon Suite. They have played here a few times, and I never went. I had no idea they still sounded that good, will definitely be checking out the next show here! The boys look like they haven't aged at all.

I thought the new CD was really good too. It has as some damn good rock and ballads on it. The only thing I didn't care for was the detuned guitar stuff. It gives the music a more ominous, updated tone.

Man, I didn't check the video until now -- great stuff! Mike's voice is in top shape. Maybe it was cold, because they don't exactly look very high energy, but the sound for a live clip is excellent. Matt Frenette still looks like he's about to blow chunks every time he hits the snare... :P
