Postby G.I.Jim » Wed Jan 09, 2008 2:43 pm

I hate to dump my problems in here, but right now I've SERIOUSLY gotta vent!!! As most of you know, I've been writing a lot of songs, and working a lot on my Myspace page the last few months. I've been writing songs for a few projects overseas, as well as my own solo project. I've written just about enough solo songs for an album (and then some). I've worked non-stop for weeks on these songs.

Tonight, I buy new sounds for my main keyboard, go to back-up my files, and.....Poof! EVERY FUCKING SONG I'VE WORKED ON FOR OVER A YEAR IS GONE!!! I'm so upset right now, I don't know what to do. I had 4 or 5 songs that I was getting ready to lay the vocal tracks down on....gone.

To give you an idea of what I've lost, I literally have several HUNDREDS of hours logged into that thing since last year. I had about 60 songs in there. FUCK!!!

I sincerely apologize for my language (I'm not normally like this), I'm just so pissed off at the situation. All I can do at this point, is start all over! Happy New Year! There isn't an avatar in the world that can show my frustration right now.

Thank you all for your support, and I'm sorry to dump on you.

Not to worry, that's what 99.99% of forums are for, to vent on. Sorry to hear your problems with the music. But I don't understand why you didn't have this stuff on multi media format or sets of backups. I learned (the hard way) a long long time ago that you can't keep everything either in the keyboard memory or on a single set of media (CD, floppy, HD, etc.) That really blows because now you can redo alot of stuff, but then there's that small percentage of stuff that was created in accident but you kept it cause it sounded great. It's vertually impossible to recreate the accidents that turned out good. All I can say is "Been there....Done that."

Sorry to hear about that Jim. That's tough to handle, I hope you'll be able to recapture these songs' glory!

Last year at college I was in a sound recording class, where we had unlimited time in a recording studio to experiment and make our own stuff. I nearly had my entire solo album completely recorded and mixed when some dumbass girl accidentally deletes over 300 songs, including 11 of my completed or near-completed tunes and 10 others that were partially done... needless to say I got depressed! The only material that remains from an entire three or four months' work for me, are three instrumental cuts of me and a buddy fooling around that are no longer than seven minutes COMBINED. Ugh!

I was so proud of my work too, and this happened one week before the semester was over, when I was in the final stages of touching up my material. I haven't been able to afford and/or find a good studio since then... I feel it could've been a good break for me.

I feel your pain, while I didn't lose nearly as much as you did, I know how it feels.

Good luck in your endeavors, hopefully you find some way to recover what you lost...

No. Everything I had was on the keyboard. I have a board that automatically saves everything directly to its own hard drive. The only time I save to anything external, is if I'm going to load new sounds, or if I'm about to run out of hard drive space. And that's just in the event that the new sounds mess something up. I could then re-initialize the board back to factory settings, then reload my stuff. Not the case this time unfortunately.

Jim- I have a question - is the hard drive removable? Is it a typical hard drive like one you'd find in a PC?

I had an Ensonic TS-10, and I had about 30 songs recorded in it. We had a lightning storm that killed the power, and before I could do anything...those songs were gone. I swear, if this new keyboard wasn't worth $3300.00, I'd throw this shit out in the yard right now!!! I know it's a stupid mistake on my part, but DAMNIT!

Drink heavily, PM me if need be(I am elated), and then hit the old lady in the caboose. Chicks love the anal canal.

Sometimes when I read messages my mind has a tendency to vocally narrate what I see, and for some reason (I'm sleepy as fuck, maybe), I saw "anal canal" as being pronounced "anal caynuhl".

Which brought me to imagine... Anal... Cain? ANAL CAIN! Friga's superhero alterego!

And then there was some triumphant fanfare music playing as I imagined Friga swooping over the sea wearing a cape, TBF-era mane billowing behind him in the wind.

The $3300.00 beast I'm talking about is no TS-10! I said My New keyboard! I have a Motif XS8! The XS8 is the one that I fucked up! I also have a Korg Karma, and a Motif ES6, but my main board for sequencing is the XS8.

Thanks Tammy, I really appreciate it. I appreciate all of your comments, and I wasn't really looking for sympathy...I just had to vent. It's my own dumb-ass fault I dumped the memory! The beers kicking in now, so I'm feeling a little better. I think I'm just going to take off from work tommorrow and get drunk!

I'll take a day or too off of songwriting probably to recooperate, then get back to it. I guess I'm still in shock a little right now. I"ll get over it.

Wow, I checked out the Motif XS8 on line. Amazing similarities it has with the SY77/SY99, which is comparibly the great great grandfather of the Motif XS8. I've had mine since 1990. So it's fair to say that my Yamaha is a dinosour. When I was living in Japan, I purchased it for 300,000 yen back then which was right around $2,800.00 USD along with 9 Japanese made voice cards. This keyboard was state of the art for it's time but user friendly it is not. I find myself spending more time programming it then I do trying to be creative, which is a huge burden. If I'm not mistaken, I read somewhere that Toto produced the Fahrenheit album using four of them midi'ed together.

I'm no programmer! I stick pretty close to original factory sounds, and only make minor tweaks. I'm not the most technologically savy person! I know quite a bit about the Motif, but as is evident, I also know how to jack up the memory in one!

Yeah, sticking close to original factory voices is nice to do if your happy with what is already there. BTW, I was wrong with the Toto album. Because that album was released years before the SY77/99 was released. I know it was an album by someone like Toto and it was in 90' just can't recall who it was. Oh well, no big deal.

Best of luck with your situation.
