Tom Petty sucks. That guy's been stoned for the last 20 years. Along with Bob Dylan, they're the two ugliest people in rock.

I'm only a casual BA fan (don't own all his albums), but these would be my picks;
-Summer of 69
-Take Me Back
-Cuts Like a Knife (maybe the acoustic version to change things up)
-Fits You Good (or "Lonely Nights")
-Run To You

I thought Prince was electrifying last year--numero uno in my insignificant opinion; still love Tom P--not enough rockers, though. Maybe, just maybe, by some miracle Journey could play next year and SP sing a couple of rockers (no ballads!)... *Sigh* Wouldn't THAT be something?

Well, let me understand...

Alot of you peeps are of the opinion that Tom Petty "sucked", for this SB half time gig. I think he did alright, and the music was good. 8)

Then you state Journey should do the next one, but "only" if SP was on board.
Why should he ever agree to doing that, when the next day, more peeps will be squawking, " he looks soo old, he sounds like a gravel truck, he cannot hit the notes, etc. etc.".

Is it any wonder why he doesn't come forward to sing for us again, be it in Journey, or solo?
we would "expect" him to sound like he did in 1981, when that will never happen again.
I don't blame him for sitting home and petting his cat. At least his cat doesn't expect 'purr-fection' from him; or any other singer who was big in the 70's and 80's!

Time will have it's way with us all, my friends. Be it our voices, our eyesight, or hearing and aches and pains. Be thankful for those who still try to entertain us...and take each performance as a gift, because as much as we want it; it will never be 1981 again! :(

Peace & Music,
Anne

Petty's NOT a strong singer. His pitch was fine, but he's got that Mcguinn/Dylan thing that I can't stand.
However, he played a 12-string Ric, so he's a holy man in my book!

Just once, I wanna see a half time show that isn't done by a bunch of 2 feet in the grave dead rockers....or crappy top40 pop fuckers.

I agree!! But there's nothing in between that anyone knows about mate - that's the problem!!!

All the classic rockers that big networks might trust to put on a "hits" show are near dead and the young bands of today aren't talented enough to play and actualy have more then 2 songs anyone might actually know!

Has to do Into the Fire or I won't watch. I don't care if that song wasn't a hit, it's brilliant.

Wow, really? You could hear Petty talking between tunes and stuff. That's a letdown. Watch the U2 link. Not taped.

I distinctly heard, several times, that walk around "huh" thing going on with his voice during a couple of the songs. If it was pre-recorded, they must have had him set up as if on stage and walking around. Guess we'll never find out the real truth of things. lol

His vocals were live.

Ah... thanks for clearing up my confusion. Though, isn't that what some in this thread were saying? Or am I just really lost? :?

Bruce Springsteen? I'm starting to feel a bit queasy.

You need to expand your musical horizon there dickface. Bruce is loved worldwide. What you want, Journey, lol?

He may have a few fans out there, but I'm not one of them. Really can't stand him or Mellencamp. CJ Snare can run circles around them vocally.

Jesus, ya'll are hopeless...did someone REALLY just use BRUCE FUCKING SPRINGSTEEN in the same breath as the lead singer of FIREHOUSE????

(sigh) Let's see- BORN TO RUN, BADLANDS , BORN IN THE USA, JUNGLELAND, BLINDED BY THE LIGHT, THE RIVER....

or...LOVE OF A FUCKING LIFETIME?????? LISTEN TO YOURSELVES - PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No help needed, I asked for an explanation on "queazyness" but no response. Springsteen wins by default though he could win on merit alone.

The only noticeable taped vocals were on "Free Fallin" each time Petty belted the refrain "And I'm free...free fallin!"
Identical - ripped straight off the album.
Incidentally, it's also the only part of the song that actually calls for Petty to sing in something besides his usual talent-free breezy Dylan-esque manner.

As for the rest, well, whatever it was, it certainly wasn't pulled from the albums.
But as we learned with Journey, that fact alone shouldn't put anyone's doubts to bed.

Bwahahaha...Dude, I'm caucasian. Last night, I was wearing a Strahan jersey, so I was black by proxy....I was also piss drunk. Saying "blow my big black cock" is certainly far more impressive than saying "blow my 1/2 italian, 1/4 russian, 1/4 polish pea-sized pecker"....

That vocal delay is used every single time I've ever seen the band play that song.

Okay, you're right. The Super Bowl Halftime Show people should have made sure that every person who plans on watching the Halftime Show likes the act that is performing. They royally screwed up because ohsherrie says Tom Petty sucks. Why didn't they consult you?

Your opinion duly noted but you're in the minority. The SB appearance has introduced his music to new fans. All 4 songs he played are in the top 100 purchased on iTunes now. "Free Fallin" at #12.

Who would you rather have played? Lemme guess, Kanye West?

Thank God they didn't put cRAPola on there.
