Not sure if you get The Oprah Windbag, errrr, I mean Winfrey Show in the land down under. If you do, I just saw an advertisement for Rick Springfield appearing and performing on her show tomorrow! Just wanted to give you a heads up, mate! She's also supposed to ask Springfield the hard-hitting question of did "Jesse's Girl" really exist! More great journalism from the windbag

That is ONE HELL of a good ROCK album. I kid you not EXCELLENT album.
Too bad Rick got the damned 'teen idol' tag. He's a great pop songwriter.

I agree. The first listen I was in "shock". Couldn't believe I was listening to a Springfield cd. It is a very good cd though.

TOTO are the best band ever, one of them anyway. The body of work is sublime! your really missing out Deano. BA is alright, but lets be honest - he's no less a pillow biter than Toto and Springfield are, BA loves the sausage as much as any 80's pop band.

I agree with you about Toto....Gayer than gay.
But Springfield is rocking harder while BA is going softer. Check out Springfield's S.D.A.A. cd Dean. You may be surprised.

I've heard much of Toto's catalogue and I can say without a doubt that they do not rock as hard as Journey. Not even close. However, that doesn't mean I don't like their music.

Most of Kingdom of Desire rocks my ass right off, same with Falling in Between. Those are both excellent hard-rocking albums.

"Working Class Dog", maybe? I'm no Rick Springfield expert, but that was definitely his most well-known album and certainly the one that put him on the map, in this country. I personally always liked the song "Love Somebody". That song simply always got my adrenaline pumping.

Rick DOES rule! We saw him live a year ago here, and he was great! Amazing how long he was able to stretch the time out for as few songs as he played, but he was a great showman... Best line of the show (repeated several times):

Intresting. Rick has really evolved with each album, so you get a different sound each time. As each album reflects his personal expeiernces and at times demons, there are different vibes going on.

To put it very briefly -

Living In Oz (1983) would I think, be considered his "Escape". Heavier edge to it and more personal and filled with perfect melodic rock.

Tao (1985) is much more high-tech and features lots of synth and drum machines alongside the musicians. Heavier again in places, but his most anthemic release and lyrically, very very deep and disturbed.

Working Class Dog (1981) - 25 years aold, but ahead of it's time...very pop, but catchy as hell...every track.

Rock Of Life (1988) - Mellower, but very high tech power pop/rock. Lyrically as deep if not deeper than ever. A few massive anthems.

Karma (1996/7) - Ages more...but still pop/melodic rock at its best and some great anthems and more personal stories.

Shock Denial Anger Acceptance (2003) - Proof he's still as angry and as rocking as ever...very heavy in places.

Lots to choose from.

Written In Rock - The Anthology is a 2CD set released in 2006 - that's probaly the place to start. Everything represented.

Yeah, fuckin Jesse's Girl has me deep in thought for hours if not days tryin to figure that one out.

In contrast, I can put up Journey's One More and BA's Native Son if you want deep lyrics.

Great tracks on here.
Highlights for me are Alyson, Affair of the Heart, Me & Johnny, Souls. Great stuff.

Even though I'm really not a fan of synths. The middle portion of this disc is great, "State of the Heart", "Written in Rock", "Walking on the Edge", and "Walk Like a Man" are great tunes.

This is the disc that really broke him here. I think this should be your starting point Prog!

The title track "Rock of Life" is actually got me hooked on Rick. Great song, the video did very well on MTV. Very strong disc top to bottom.
