gregg rolie, dammit!

Hey, I like Gregg Rolie too...but the Journey I came to know and love was the Escape/Frontiers version.

A few counterpoints to cover: I completely agree with, and understand, your point about Journey being an actual "emotional" part of our lives. I can remember dances, proms, dates and a whole host of other teenage experiences that made Journey synonymous with my early adult life. Point taken. However, to me, those memories can't be tarnished, changed or forgotten. They're a part of me and who I am. Nothing the band does will change that...ever. The tired attempts to smear the band through photoshopping, smear campaigns, ethnic and cultural trashing and other mindless rants and activities have distorted reality for a few indiviaduals to the point where they think the past, and the aforementioned memories, are being changed and/or altered. They're not...in any way shape or form. This is just a sad, impotent, veiled attempt to mask sour grapes and what has morphed into distorted hatred toward the new lead singer. If people were truly disheartened by the direction the band has taken, they would detach themselves completely and hold on to their precious memories if in fact this was in some way altering the past. But they can't and they won't. That would be too simple and it would conflict with their agenda to trash and hurl cheapshots at someone innocent to all of this. That reeks of sour grapes, low class and self-esteem, and a general inability to move forward. It's really quite sad.

Greg wrote:Nope, you're completely wrong Dean. My problem with Journey has nothing to do with Jeremey not being the lead singer of Journey. My problems with Journey have stemmed from their management of the band during the last year or so of Augeri and how they handled things with Jeff Scott Soto: something in which made you so angry that you said you were through with Journey and would never post in this forum again. But, I digress.

Secondly, I have not spoken an ill word toward anybody's positive opinion on this band. If you and some other think Arnel Pineda is the next best thing, then that's fine. Enjoy the concerts, enjoy whatever new albums (if any) are released. But, I have not been impressed by Arnel for many reasons...none of them having to do with his nationality or race...so let's nip that in the bud right now. If Arnel improves and turns out to be the best lead singer since Steve Perry and I'm able to be convinced by this...great! But, forgive me if my expectations are a little higher than what AP is giving me right now. After my favorite band of all time has made so many frequent lead singer changes in just a short time, a person eventually becomes a little disheartened by the process. I want them to get it right and felt Jeff was the right choice to lead Journey into a brand new, great direction once again....not a nostalgic act. Again, this has nothing to do with Arnel Pineda ( I think the guy is a nice guy and living out a dream we all would love to accomplish,) nor does it have to do with the views of anybody from any other forums nor this forum. My opinions are my opinions alone. Agree or disagree, doesn't matter to me whatsoever. Just respect my opinion and I'll continue to respect yours.

On the contrary, I have and have always had a very deep emotional connection with Journey's music. I took my first love to two Journey concerts years ago, and even now Faithfully reminds me of her. My dad had triple bypass heart surgery three years ago and "I'll Be All Right Without You" got me through it, especially knowing the story behind the song. I'm not offended by your assertion, but I don't think it's totally valid. Just because Journey's not en vogue, all over MTV and the radio, and headlining sold-out stadium shows doesn't preclude their music from defining the important moments/people or having the same emotional impact in my life as it once did in yours, ya know? And that's why it's great... it's still around to have defined a lot of my early adult life. I mean shit, what am I supposed to remember, the monotonous stream of rap they played at my high school prom 4 years ago? Fuck that shit. I couldn't remember one of those inane songs if you had a gun to my head. I got to grind all over a couple of broads' junk out of it, that's about it

I'm not sure what "finding out about Journey through others" means other than the fact that they were an established band with a plethora of hits by the time I was able to listen to them, but by your own admission you weren't exactly spinning the self-titled debut in the days after its release. But yeah, the fact that I do have an emotional attachment to the music is what's gonna make me go and see this current line-up, even if AP has an accent or is pitchy or can't sing that well on some of the songs. If it's that bad, I'll just catch a buzz and really kick back :P

good point about our memories being just that- ours. after tapegate exploded i had a whole bunch of emotions about the whole thing. in 2005 i went crazy hopping flights all over the country to see shows. i spent a small fortune doing it. i was sick over the realization that i had been scammed. eventually i took stock of it all and realized i had met many fantastic people and saw new places and really had a whole lot of fun. i'm still pissed about the fraud and the shitload i put into azoff's pocket with 5 star.... but it's done. at the end of the day i've got some great memories.
Until we meet again, may God

Why use more words than are necessary?

Works both ways, my bogus Journey "fan."

You're blasting people here day in and day out for enjoying Journey w/out perry, JSS and Jeremey (both of who's singing I like and thought fit w/ Journey).

You'd be happier in your dottage if you just admitted "I love perry, I love JSS' ass and his unAugeriness and his pms and Jeremey's my friend even though he does exactly what I blast Augeri for doing" and then took nose face's advice and just "leave Journey alone."

He did (eventually and after signifigant considerations), why the hell can't you people?

Maybe to say that you not having an emotional bond with the music is a bit unfair for me to say. My point I'm trying to make is that it was impossible for you to understand the ties that us older fans (and fans a bit older than me) had to the band at the height of their career. Most of us witnessed first hand how special this band was. Just like I wouldn't be able to understand the ties some fans have to the Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin.

Perfectly fair, perfectly fair. I understand that. Kinda why I think it's a blessing in a way since I can go see one of my favorite bands play with less strings attached (of course, there are still some...)

"Strings?"

Aw come on, now.

Don't paint a perry-led Journey with that cruel brush.

Had Journey not "cracked the stone" I have it on solid info that the first leg of the Trial By Fire tour would've been to kick of in NYC. On the fuckin 4th Of JULY!!! In ONLY 3 more years, and you're bitching about strings attached and bemoaning having to wait around.

Where's your FAITH, man?

For Goddsake's WYLAW was NOMINATED for a grammy.

Wasn't implying anything about Perry-led Journey or anything at all. Just meant I can go and see a live show and not have the "burden" of growing up with the music as it was coming out that Greg and others speak of that makes it harder for them to stomach this incarnation than me.

Have to agree! This clip/song showcases all of them. Best live clip from any band ever, IMO! Talent just oozing off that stage. Doesn't matter how many times I watch this clip, it just amazes me......... Can't believe I saw the Escape tour, just wish I would have grasped back then, just how talented they really were. :D

I saw Journey with Perry in '81 & '83, and the '81 show is still to this day the best concert I've ever seen. Was a casual Journey fan up until that concert. I was then officially hooked.

Time passed and somehow I totally missed the ROR tour, and wasn't really into that record, not then anyway.

No new tours or records for what seemed like forever, Journey took a back seat to Van Halen and other great bands that were putting out great records in that day.

In '96 they released TBF, and I didn't find much there that interested me, although it was fantastic to see them back together.

Had heard they acquired a new singer and actually heard one of the songs from Arrival a few years later on the radio. I kind of liked it, but it sure wasn't SP.

In early '06 a friend of mine put on the '01 Vegas DVD and although it wasn't SP, I was really enjoying seeing them playing live again, and Augeri sounded pretty damn good to me. My friend told me that they were going to be here the following July, and I couldn't get home quick enough to hit ticketmaster. Got two tickets and couldn't wait for the show. Nothing but Journey music was being played in my car for the next few months, and I was Journey's number 1 fan again. Finally the day arrives and the wife and I head out to Fair Park in Dallas to the Smirnoff Music Centre (the suckiest venue, ever) and saw some friends in line waiting to get in, and am told that Augeri wouldn't be performing. For a fleeting moment I thought SP was back!! They said it was some dude they'd never heard of. I watched the concert and left pretty unfulfilled. I was so disappointed that the magic of the early '80's was altogether absent. JSS did a really good job, but it just wasn't what I was expecting to see. I wasn't JSS's biggest fan at that point.

I began reading the forum at Journey's main site to see if Augeri was going to come back and when. Of course they give out information like it's gold, and not much was known by anyone. I then began reading here at MR and had my eyes opened to the world of JSS and began listening to boots of his later shows, and he started growing on me. It wasn't long before I was on the JSS train and excited to see where he could take Journey. Now I'm hoping Augeri doesn't return, because JSS is just tearing it up. My wish was granted in December of '06 and JSS was named the new lead singer. Well we all know the end of that story and the nature in which it came to pass. I was sick hearted and totally PISSED at Journey. I had no idea what they must have been thinking. Still to this day don't know what they were thinking.

As time passed, the anger faded and more reasonable thoughts were beginning to surface. I began to realize that I have no control over what they do or how they do it. I don't even know to this day who was really responsible for what had happened. And to be more honest, it's not my call and none of my business. It's their business. They have to run it as a business in order to secure their financial future.

People began batting around the possible replacements. Hugo, Jeremey, and this strange little Filipino dude Arnel. I was really pulling for Jeremey as he was the closest sounding person to Steve Perry I had ever heard. I was on the JH train. I'd still like to see how he would sound fronting the band, but again, that's not my call and none of my business. In a totally shocking turn of events, Journey decides on Arnel. I'm not sold, not at all. I wanted JH. Again, anger fades and more reasonable thoughts begin to surface, and I finally decide to give the strange little Filipino a chance. He might just be fantastic.

Well, he's not fantastic, not yet anyway. He has the potential to be though, so I'm here, typing this message waiting to see what the future of Journey again holds. It's been a hell of a rocky ride, but I'm in it for the music and friends after all. I can't control what they do, and I as a person can't stay mad at anyone for very long. I'm all about giving someone a chance or two or three because people as human beings deserve that.

Arnel is doing nothing but seizing the moment and "making hay while the sun is shining" as HH said, and I can't be mad at Journey for making decisions that they think is best for the band and their financial future. It's their business to do with as they wish. All I can do is decide whether to continue to enjoy their music or just walk away.

I think I'll stick around and see what happens. ;)

That's one of the best, post edited, enhanced, concert cd's ever release. How many Steve Perry's do we need to hear in the background? ;) lol...

that Arnel's voice will hold up any better than Augeri's or one solid, good reason for me to believe Arnel will actually start "singing" these high notes instead of "shouting" them. Come on, you can do it...

He shouted (chest voice) alot of high notes in the beginning, especially in Sep Ways, but half way through the show he relaxed and started to sing with better technique. Augeri's always had a rough time on those high notes, even on the 2001 DVD he had facial/vocal strains on those high notes. Example: Who's Cryin Now.

Saint John wrote:The tired attempts to smear the band through photoshopping, smear campaigns, ethnic and cultural trashing and other mindless rants and activities have distorted reality for a few indiviaduals to the point where they think the past, and the aforementioned memories, are being changed and/or altered.

Saint John - I'm with you all the way on the weeping and wailing that went on last year....and all the hatred that came in its wake. It got on my nerves too and was completely out of proportion. In the end I could barely face logging on to this site.

At least it's all lightened up a bit now and most people - it seems - are prepared to give the band another chance (which of course was always going to happen given that hardcore fans are just like drug addicts with no power at all to make rational decisions and walk away from it all).

So I agree with what you're saying up to a point. But the end of your message reminded me of that mantra Augeri's fans came out with for so many years: "If you can't move on with the band then fuck right off".

This was all pretty insane because while we all argued about all the crap we argue about the band just kept on playing the same old Perry era hits year after year...and here we are in 2008 and Journey have just played a show where YET AGAIN there is nothing on the set-list from after 1983.

And there was nothing from after 1983 on the setlist when I saw Journey with JSS either. At least with Augeri they played three or four songs from the last decade but even those were pastiches of a formula which was well-established a quarter of a century ago.

In the end...Augeri, JSS, Arnel...it doesn't really matter. No-one is moving forward. It's ALL about recreating the past. Nothing more. Nothing less.

For us Journey fans the conversations about all these replacement singers is much like those discussions on American Idol about how well some guy sings an all-time classic. But at least people on American Idol know it's just some crappy talent show.

Really? I thought they had added IBAWY and Message of Love with JSS. Didn't they play those over there too? :?

Well, let's wait and see what Vegas gets, setlist-wise Matto b/c while I see your point, Chile as with Europe, had never seen the band so of course they were gonna demand the DD.

Deb - no, not at the London show. But we did get a bonus track from 1975 though. "Mystery Mountain" or whatever it was called... :)

I reckon in Vegas they they might go crazy and risk it all by playing Remember Me from 1998 and Higher Place from 2001.

No...the true test of whether this is a real ongoing band rather than a circus act will be the new album. Until then it's all just a homage to another singer and another time...both long gone unfortunately.

Hadn't JSS performed "Message of Love," "Remember Me," "When You Love A Woman," "Higher Place," "Faith in the Heartland," and "The Place in Your Heart" all in concert with Journey?

All but TPIYH, which was rehearsed w/ JSS but never debuted.

Didn't they also rehearse "Daydream" with Jeff at one point???
I think I remeber hearing a clip of Jeff forgetting the words
and singing,
"Yea, that black guy just stole my caaaar!"

I also saw some killer clips of when they brought back "LaDoDa".

I STILL think Dixie Highway needs to re-emrge someday!

He did a fabulous job on When You Love A Woman. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gn8TzSoF1M

There is something in JSS' delivery that is very similar to Perry's.........he was definitely feelin' it.

Oh I see how it is. You aren't an Arnel supporter unless you discredit everything former singers accomplished? Nice.

That is true,Progrocker. But at best there were only two songs per show which were written after 1983. More often just one. And when I saw them....none.
