Sigh... it is a disease. It's genetic. My grandfather had it, my uncle had it (both died from it), my father had it, my brother has it, my nephew has it. Proven by the medical community as a disease. I've already informed both my boys that they have the genetic disposition to become alcoholics. Cunning, baffling, powerful, and oh so patient. Disease.

Stolen with love from wikipedia: The term "disease" refers to a disorder of structure or function. The term can refer to a physical disorder, such as diabetes, or to a mental disorder, such as schizophrenia. Diseases can be short-lived, such as the common cold, or life-long, as in sickle cell anemia.

In the case of alcoholism, research has demonstrated both genetic and environmental contributors to the development of a condition that carries significant physical morbidity. Such factors as a typical course and well-described epidemiology (the incidence and prevalence of the condition) also contribute to the establishment of a disease entity."

Sorry, I don't agree that it's a disease, either. You didn't have to drink. You decided to drink. Just like I decided to eat too much, even though both my Mom and Dad were overweight, it was still me who decided to overeat. There are some doctors who want to call obesity a disease but it just isn't.

Since it is already a scientific fact, it doesn't require your agreement. I can say that the earth is flat, but that doesn't change the fact that it is round.

The American Medical Association recognized addiction as a disease back in 1956.

Neither time was rescheduled. I had Yes rescheduled once but that was only about a 6 week delay due to illness, and they came right back at the next available tour opening.

The only show I've had cancel on me was Aerosmith a couple years ago. It was the first show canceled when Steven started having voice problems. Of course the rest of the tour ended up being canceled because he had surgery.

As a person who nearly had her life destroyed because of a chronic alcoholic, I really couldn't care less what the AMA calls it. I hate my ex husband's guts and hope he dies alone and on the street dead drunk.

They can call it a disease all they want but the fact is if you never DECIDE to take a drink in the first place, there's no way you will become an alcoholic.

Many of these same medical morons also say obesity is a disease. Sorry, but that's bullcrap. That doesn't mean I'm not sympathetic to people who have a severe alcohol or weight problem. Far from it.

Someone has to use FREE WILL to pick up a bottle to drink. You are born with a nature to be addicted. The question is what will you feed it with. I come from a long line of drinkers. It is not a problem for me. It would if I started the HABIT. Just like smoking. I was not born with a desire to smoke. All of my grandparents and their parents did. I did not hunger for it out of the shoot.

Yes, we are all born with things in our DNA from our ancestors. BUT, the choice is yours to break the chain.

I heard Valerie Bertinelli say in an interview years ago that if Ed ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. I wonder if that's where we are now... :?:

I'm sure you can hear more if you catch her interview with Oprah tomorrow. She's going to be promoting her new tell-all book. I'm sure the shit will hit the fan. My guess is that this is what is causing the recent rage in the Van Halen camp. Just a guess.

Ahhh.... Yes, that could certainly be causing Ed to "not be happy". I mean, she goes on Oprah, only what 10 million or so people will see it?? 8)

I watched the entire interview this afternoon and I think Valerie did an excellent job without dragging her ex-husband through the muck. Most of the interview focused on her own insecurities, her weight gain and subsequent loss, depression, etc. She stated that getting married at 20 was a stupid thing for her to do - not blaming anyone but herself. She confessed that she and Ed both used cocaine and that both of them had had extramarital affairs. It sounded to me that both of them had been unhappy for years. She is on good terms with Ed and girlfriend, Janie. If Ed is using her interview as an excuse for his latest tantrum, he needs to find another one.

WINNIPEG ON MAY 3 - who's going?!

I was going to go on April 7 in Milwaukee (750 miles)

but Winnipeg (413 miles) is more appealing. Now I've just got to convince my Dad....

Definitely no slouches! Robin Zander is one of the finest, and most under-reated rock singers EVER (and while he's no SP, he IS still out there doing it and a damned high level. That oughta account for something) and Tom Peteresen is a friggin Bass god! Rick Neilsen is either one of the greatest rock guitarists ever, or one of the WORST ever...I've yet to figure that out. But he's a class act either way...and Bun E. is just so darned loveable!

...and oh yeah...alcoholism IS a disease...
