It's a low range, bluesy rendition..something Steve can do in his sleep.
His ability to sing in his low range was never in question - not even as he limply trudged along on his final stretch with Journey.
His feeble attempts to sing in his once-glorious upper range towards the end, (ahh, which is where it really counts!), comes off sounding weak and off-pitch as usual.

I'm afraid this is not the exalted Augeri comeback fans have long been waiting for, nor that of which certain SA water-carriers have cracked it up to be.

I think it depends what everyone is personally looking for him to sound like. If you are content with him singing in his more natural vocal range, then it will probably be worth the wait. If others are expecting him to put out a Journey-sounding album, where the emphasis is soaring high range vocals, you'll probably be disappointed, as I am sure he isn't trying to kill his vocal chords again...he isn't getting any younger. Either way, I don't care, I just want to hear some new stuff, but I can understand after tapegate, a lot of hardcore fan reactions, and seeing how the Journey camp treated him, he's being very cautious and may not think he's going to be welcomed back.

And Andrew or Deano might know this better, but there could be something stupid in the post-Journey paperwork that states he has/had to wait for certain things Journey-related to happen, which may have taken longer than expected, so he can't "capitalize" off any Journey publicity so to speak, with both entities hawking new material at the same time.

I hope it sounds like Tall Stories and not Journey personally. That was a great album.

So you were able to sit in on some recording sessions? How did the music sound? Did it have a pop or a rock feel to it? Do you remember any of the lyrics you heard him sing?

This is great, it will be a good day when SA puts out that album, after so many written him off when he went down on the first leg of the Leppard tour. Congrats to Steve Augeri for getting back to what he he deserves to be doing..making top notch music, for HIS voice.

I believe you'll see a new cd, but I wouldn't count on any live tour. As TNC noted, he just hasn't rebounded. He still can't sing live.

I am however, pulling for the guy.

cmon, dean, just because he can't sing in the journey range doesn't mean he can't sing live. i have a feeling he will do just fine.

The only problem I see, is that Steve still seems to WANT to sing in the Journey range. It is almost like the vocal coach he had with Journey has changed his way of singing so much that he cannot return to "his" voice. I agree with TNC that as great as it was hearing that Christmas clip, it did not completely "shine". But I am STOKED to get new Steve/Tall Stories product!!

Maria, you come on...You heard the Xmas show. He wanted no part of the high notes. He kept everything low, which tells me he isn't there yet. Like I said Maria, I am pulling for him, but I sure as Hell aren't going to say he is back, when in fact he isn't.

And let me ask you this? If he does sing live, you think he will attempt to sing a Journey song, or any song with high end vox? Just sayin, not hatin.

PS- for those of you who haven't seen his live tapes from 2000, he was so good then. You can see/hear so clearly the effect the catalog has had on his throat.

Don't get me wrong, he did sound "good". But he still sounded like he was singing in "Journey voice" instead of the voice I remember from Tall Stories or even Shine. Those strike me as "his" voice and it was obvious to me that Steve did not sing like that with Journey. KMS and We Will Meet Again are the best/closest examples of "his" voice. But Journey never followed that up. And I know Steve had extensive work with (a) vocal coach (es) during his tenure with Journey. I wonder if the techniques shown Steve during that time have "stuck" (for lack of a better word). Hell, they may be better, safer, healthier techniques to singing so it would make sense. But it doesn't sound quite "right" to me. Good? Yes. But not necessarily comfortable...

so what if he didn't want the high notes. he sounded good dean, in a different way. honestly dean, i absolutely dont want to hear him sing journey ever again. it's his turn, his time to do what makes him happy as a musician. a solo or ts show should be just that. but hey im not your typical wiggler now am i.
