Why is it that Toto can....

Change lead singers and have awesome albums? I think most could do it,but why is it that Toto fans don't get pissed? Bobby Kimball is awesome, but Joseph Williams is my favorite..[/b]

I think, honestly, it's that Toto is a faceless band in most peoples eyes. They change a few members, who's gonna know? Journey, VH, KISS, etc...these guys are more about "rock star" personalities whereas a band like Toto look like they walked off the street...btw- this isn't an indictment of them or their worth as artists. Just a statement of fact, imho.

That's actually true.. They are probably the most talented musicians in the biz..Just look at how many people use them on their other albums..Remember this crappy album(j/k) Thriller? Look how many credits Toto has on there..Its insane..

They let the music do the talking and have never been a band where one personality rides over everyone else or makes tabloid headlines.

And they don't have themselves too seriously - http://www.tv3.co.nz/Video/TotoarrivefortheirfirstshowinNZ/tabid/551/articleID/47849/cat/177/Default.aspx?articleID=47849#video

Interesting we mention Toto, this past weekend I dusted off the old Toto IV album and played it in my car on the drive up to Japan Center yesterday. It was actually the first time since 1987 that I listened to this cassette. Still sounds as good as ever, I got the Made in Japan Sony/CBS Inc. labeled cassette, purchased it while living in Japan. "I won't hold you back" was my favorite track from the album, and still is today. About them being faceless, yeah, I wouldn't recognize them if they were standing right next to me. Perhaps none of their albums really showed their faces? Both the albums I have of Toto doesn't.

Toto has always juggled singers, and I don't think it's been an issue for 2 reasons:

1. Steve Lukather has always sang a lot of the lead parts on the albums (as well as a lot of backing vocals). Having some consistent core musicians, helps the albums have that "Toto" feel to them. Drummers and bass players have changed through the years, but backing vocals, and the main songwriters have stayed pretty much the same. Steve MAKES Toto. Have you heard his newest album? It's Toto!

2. Toto (Like Journey in a sense) has always been about change. Unlike Journey, Toto really started with studio musicians, and they've never really had just one lead vocalist. Bobby started out as their "Main" vocalist, but there's always been others having their turn. I think they're also like Chicago in that regard. It keeps some of the ego's down. When you get someone who's too big for the group (Peter Cetera) they usually split off and try (Try being the keyword) to make it on their own.

To casual fans (as well as a lot of hardcore fans), Toto still sounds like Toto. That's all they want. Well, I can't speak for the fans, but at least that's what I want. I don't know what's going to happen with them (now that their talking about throwing in the towel), but I hope like hell we hear another album!!! They're (outside of Journey) probably my favorite band of all time! JMHO!

Can't really equate Toto with Journey.

Journey's sound is largely based around Perry's vocals. So much so that Neal and Jon have gone out of their way to audition/hire 4 different Perry sound a likes (Chalfant, Augeri, Jeremy, Arnel) and fire a 5th singer (JSS, even though he was receiving rave reviews from both fans and critics alike) because he didn't have their "Legacy Sound" (i.e. Perry).

Toto on the other hand, didn't base their sound around their front man. It was more of a group effort. Did they even have a specific front man? I'm not a big Toto fan which is why I ask.

Marzdog, took Wyatt to his first NHL game. 0-0 in third, Kings score, airhorn comes on, poor little fucker jerked awake! Then Vancouver scored with 3 mins left and won it in OT.

Good road win. Kings drawing badly. I bet there wasn't 12,000 in the barn tonight.

The Toto / Chicago analogy is right on in my opinion. I always thought of Toto as Chicago lite with a little more pop sound.
