Perry is number 1 always. The rank of the others changes depending on the day and mood.

I can go with Prince, but Bach...SJ your reaching on that one..I would take Jeff Keith over Bach anyday..

Both good, Bach's got more power and range, but I really like Jeff Keith's tone/timbre. One of my faves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2pYCz6hI-I

ok this is hard...some scattered commentary throughout. Note: based on total vocal package, not just clearest voice and highest range.

1. Sam Cooke..listen to the Night Beat album (specifically Lost and Looking) if any questions, mind-blowingly good live also (Harlem Square Club album)

2. Steve Perry (some California-based one hit wonder)...debatedly a better natural voice than Cooke, but you can't beat the original, though it's possible to come VERY close. Some of the mid 80s work was just outstanding from a technique and emotion side.

3. Mark Free (King Kobra, Signal, etc)...if you only heard KK, you have NO IDEA what he could do or what he sounded like later...absolute monster live, and should have been a shoe-in to replace Gramm in Foreigner in the 90s. Solo album has better demo vocals than most could do for a finished product.

4. John Farnham...can be mechanical and oversings in studio, but live, few can touch him

5. Jimmy Barnes (Solo, Cold Chisel)....not a pure singer, but pure, raw power--and that is where very few can touch him. Can go too far into screaming, but restrained slightly, he is extremely effective.

others...in some random order
Bob Catley (Magnum)...first solo album or Magnum's Sleepwalking may be his best
Jackie Wilson....might be close to top 5, but haven't heard enough back catalogue
Rod Stewart...up to late 90s pre-surgery
Phil Collins....can sound very mechanical with vocal effects, but can really let loose--and very unique
Glenn Hughes...best at changing his voice of anybody I have heard, and raw power
Jimi Jamison (Survivor)...find Man Against the World and Across the Miles if any questions
Danny Bowes (Thunder)...amazingly versatile--can sing just about anything, not just blues
Paul Rodgers...for blues rock, there are few better
Dave Bickler (Survivor)...pure rock singer with a raw edge that Jamison could never touch
Kevin Chalfant....Eye of the Storm cd, if questions
Freddy Curci (Sheriff, Alias)....oversings at times, but an incredible voice. Dreamer's Road is outstanding

The top one is easy...Steve Perry. There are two other singers I really like that have that same passion & emotion in their amazing voices...Tom Chaplin and John West. Those would be my top three. I love the voices of a lot of singers, (Phil Collins, Van Morrison, Michael Stipe, F. Mercury, Donny Hathaway, Seal, Elton John, the Counting Crows singer, Sam Cooke) but these top three have something special.

unfortunately, what is on youtube isn't exactly the best out there. Better option is to go to a couple of myspace sites, which have several songs on display...Signal and the solo album were the recordings that used Free's voice to it's full advantage.

http://www.myspace.com/longwayfromloveaormasterpiece .....solo album. Listen to Coming Back for More

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu ... =161981273 ...Signal. Listen to Could This Be Love and Run Into the Night

Apparently, Free was contacted about Foreigner when Gramm left the first time, but it went nowhere. Then, by 1994, Free was permanently out of the music industry for personal reasons, unlikely ever to record again. The details are very complicated. Very sad story to a talented singer who, like countless others, never got the big break.

Not necessarily the best, but my favorites:

Steve Perry
Sam Cooke
Paul McCartney
John Lennon
Robin Zander

Honorable mention: Tommy Shaw, Dennis DeYoung, Brad Delp, Freddie Mercury (recorded not live), Rik Emmett, Steve Augeri (recorded not live), James Brown, Prince, Smokey Robinson, Creeping into the list quickly: Arnel!

VINCE NEIL?? Gawd... I remember the first time I heard him, flat as a pancake. Terrible singer. BUT, the category was favorite I guess.

... But... MICHAEL STIPE?!?!?!? C'mon.... ugh...

Personally, I think my dogs sing better than Dylan :D . Write better? no, but sing better. Dylan is one of several who makes me really consider a career as a singer, regardless of how off-key and tone deaf I might be.
