OT: Marillion

Any Marillion fans out there. I'll warn you that while I do like a lot of the Fish-era stuff (especially the last two), I am a huge Hogarth fan. HUGE. To me, this music is another level. Unfortunately, it's spoiled me to the degree that I can't even listen to a lot of 80's stuff that I used to swear by. I've lots to discuss if anyone wants to join in my thread here.

Also, Deano looks like Fish to me, in some ways.

I'm a pretty big Marillion fan, but I'm going to be honest and say I've only listened to Fish-era so far. I've been meaning to try out Hogarth but haven't bought an album yet.

LOVE Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws especially.... two of my favorite albums of all time.

Fish-era Marillion is the type of music that really connects to me on a whole different level, it takes me to a different place much in the way that a lot of Journey and Rush music does.

I'm not a Dead fan. But Marillion still puts out new stuff. And it's put out the way it should be - 15 months or 2 years of writing and recording. It's not this 2 or 3 month stuff that's out now.

If you decide to venture in to the Hogarth-era, just know you need to sample a wide variety of songs. There is a lot of slower moody stuff, some fast stuff. There is so much out there. When you are ready, contact me and I will hook you up.

I think this is why I am more Hogarth-era oriented.

I like many, many types of music. Journey used to be my favorite band and then Marillion took that spot. You have to have patience for Marillion though. It's a process. But once you get hooked, you are hooked forever.

Journey was an experimental psych/prog band first and foremost, and have retained that influence throughout their career, in some songs and albums more than others.

Plus, c'mon, up until TBF they only had two ballads per album TOPS. And radio play/album sales doesn't take away legitimacy nor add to it, if a band kicks ass they kick ass, and Journey kicks ass my friend.

I've been a fan of Marillion since the release of Fugazi (1984)

If pushed, I think I'd say Brave (1994) would be my favorite Marillion album...

...but, there really isn't anything in their catalog I dislike.

Seen them live about a dozen times, took part in the U.S. TSE Tour Fund Project,
been to the first 2 Marillion Weekends, had some beers with the guys numerous times,
done the pre-order thing now for the 3rd time...

Yep, I consider myself a moderate fan of Marillion - with and without Fish.

h roools. And so does Fish - his latest release 13th Star (2007) is outstanding.

After Fish left, replacing him with Steve Hogarth, was one of the finest musical transitions
I've ever come to witness.

I've saw them twice in the last 8 eight months...after not really bothering them for about 20 years!

I was a huge fan of everything up to and including the first album, then I thought they took a leftfield turn around the time of Fugazi.

Saw Fish's first solo tour; which was excellent; again I haven't really heard anything since.

'H' is a magnificant singer..love the 'Somewhere Else' and 'Marbles' albums and I've bought everything back to his first album with them.

As mid life crisis' go; joining a 'fan club' at 42 is pretty much up there methinks!

Casual fan....I got into MISPLACED CHILDHOOD when they it was getting buzz back in the states. One of my best friends, though, is die hard. She and her hubby even sent money to them a few years back to help fund their tour of the states, and got a THANK YOU on the liner notes of their next release. Were you in on that?

Yup. I helped with the tour fund as well. And have my name on some of the releases, including the next one. A little disappointed in this year's price though. over $60 USD. I've only been able to see them once as I live in So Cal. I saw them for the Marbles tour. Incredible. For the tour I helped fund, I was in Atlanta, so unable to attend.

Phenomenal. I've purchased all 10 shows he's offered so far. Been waiting for the next one for half a damn year. It's the first show he is releasing "Waiting to Happen". I'm curious how he does it. We dedicated that song to our daughter at our vow renewals.

Good to see some Marillion fans here. I'm jealous that some have seen them a lot more than I am able.

I did some research on Marillion's post-Fish era last night, and some of the things I read about the fanbase, coupled with what I've seen on here, have made me retract my original statement.

I am not a "pretty big" Marillion fan after all.

I just happen to immensely dig a few albums' worth of tunes and play them all the time.

We're just out of a meeting!

Marillion "Album 15" will be called Happiness Is The Road.
It will consist of 2 separate CDs (full details on www.marillion.com/preorder). Volume 1 is subtitled Essence and Volume 2 is subtitled The Hard Shoulder.
Essence (Volume 1) is evolving at the moment into a thematic journey, whilst Volume 2 is more a collection of discrete songs. Recording is still going brilliantly and the new songs we've written have "knocked out" the few people we've played them to.
