I really need to start reading other posts before I post myself, don't I?

I have a bad habit of seeing a discussion topic and just blurting something out or offering my opinion when it wasn't being solicited.

Kind of like our prom queen who put the moves on me at our 15th high school reunion. She was a stunner in high school, but 15 years and 125 pounds later, I didn't recognize her. She remembered me, though...although she "forgot" the time I asked her out at the junior prom and subsequently had my car toilet papered (professionally, it would seem) and then received a nuclear wedgie in the men's room!

Also, the key component you left out was more money for Journey.

In addition, SP will get paid his songwriter share for any tunes they release.

From a fan's point of view, it's maddeningly insane, but this is a business in the end, and from that standpoint, it's very smart.

Fuck WalMart, I'm not buying it there. Too bad, cause I was thinking about picking it up if the WM deal didn't happen.

When did WalMart become a record label? Have they ever done this with any other band before? Unless I could see it in writing from an authoritative source I simply cannot swallow it.
:?:

Walmart's the leading music seller now, only ahead of iTunes so I'd be surprised if they haven't started some record label department.

I miss Tower Records, though. Great place to hang and check out cds. Can't stand being in a Walmart.

Well, reading the information on the REO package that I bought, it basically just shows a copyright to "speedwagon recordings manufactured and distributed by REO Speedwagon, Inc."

Based on that, I think Journey will do the same.

You got a free can of that shit Cronin uses to colour his hair if you bought that REO CD when it first came out. That, and a free oven mitt.

That will be the price for the Journey CD / DVD . A bargain for all .If they hear the greatest hits remastered, they will need a clean up in aisle 3

I obviously have ZERO idea what this "agreement" was between Perry and Schon and Co. I've heard it explained on this site as Journey didn't need any permission from Perry to perform his songs in concert, but that permission was needed, if they ever wanted to record those tracks in a studio. In fact, I was told the 2001 DVD didn't need approval from Perry, because it was a live performance. Regardless of what agreement has expired, I don't believe that Journey "owns" any song that Perry wrote or co-wrote. The notion of that is simply ridiculous! As far as I know, the writers of a song ALWAYS retain the rights to those songs (unless they sell them off). Heck, just on American Idol tonight, they performed all Beatles songs, and I read that they were trying to get permission from McCartney since their first season to perform those songs! McCartney, as a co-writer, was the one who had to give the permission, so I'm not sure why Perry wouldn't have to do the same thing.

John from Boston

Apparently, John, there was some sort of agreement with a time frame that said they couldn't re-record. That time frame ran out in recent months, so according to some in the know, they are now free to do with the songs whatever they choose. I would assume SP will still get proceeds from any sale of music that he co-wrote though.

I think Lora explained it somewhat a few months ago.

I'm not an expert on these things, just joining in the discussion. I believe the writer would be entitled to royalties, but the actual "owner" of the songs would be Journey, the corporation.

It has been said here that one stipulation in the contract signed by the Journeymen severing SP's relationship (the infamous divorce papers of May 1997) was that the remaining members in the band could not re-record any songs originated by SP. But, the time frame on that stipulation has expired.

Haha, how ironic. That means, this bastardization (someone's word) of the classics will show: Journey hits manufactured and distributed by NoMota, LLC.

Everybody know what that term for Journey's corporation stands for, don't you?

My only problem with this is I don't rate Shirley's production. That in itself could make the re-recordings bland by comparison to the orginals. He also has a tendancy to bury vocalists in the mix - not what you want when you are promoting your new singer to the masses.

I was considering picking this up (the new songs sound cool) til I read they are including re-recordings=no way.
They are going to get a lot of returns for "bait and switch."

Re: REVELATION - PRESS RELEASE

Here is my problem with it:

Should the focus not be on the NEW material and the NEW dvd?
Those should be the first things mentioned.

But it is clear where their priorities lie. I've never been a supporter of the re-recording idea, STILL NOT, and this press release proves what a lot of people have been saying since the rumors first started. Let go of the past boys, stop fucking with that which need not be fucked with and focus on the present and future. Christ.

When the idea first surfaced about re-recording the classics with Jeff, I was looking forward to it. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought those songs need to be left alone. Just give us NEW music. THAT's where the priority should be. I'll still buy it though because I do want the new material and DVD.

i think you guys are reading to much into a publicists report, i highly doubt that the packaging will feature the re recorded hits( which ever song they pick, i doubt the songs previously posted will be the ones chosen)
just like the reo package the focus will be on the new material/cover, with the other 2 being bonus material.
reo did live radio show recordings of hi infidelity no one was outraged) you might hear some of the old songs in store or ads
and for 14.99 its a great deal. it will not be on a major label ie columbia so they could not include hits or time columbia would want thier money. as for recording the songs
A: anyone can record a version of anyones song without permission(the writer gets royalties)
B: the agreement journey signed with perry to get him to do the vh1 BTM show ended, they gave him control over the cataolgue product for a reported 10 years which ended..
so if andrew wanted he could get recording of all the whines here butchering journey songs and release it as long as royalties were paid as long as he didnt use the journey name.
when it comes out the hits will be mostly the dirty dozen.

March 11, 2008 -- A new chapter in the legendary career of multi-Platinum rockers JOURNEY--Neal Schon (guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards), Ross Valory (bass), Deen Castronovo (drums) and Arnel Pineda (vocals)—will begin on June 3 with the highly anticipated release of REVELATION, a three-disc CD and DVD package to be sold exclusively at Wal-Mart stores in North America.

The first disc will consist of 11 re-recorded classics, the second is filled with 11 new songs, and the third is a live, in-concert DVD. All of the music on REVELATION was produced by Kevin Shirley (who previously worked with JOURNEY on their Platinum-certified TRIAL BY FIRE album).

JOURNEY will take REVELATION on the U.S. concert trail later this July, with details to be announced in the coming weeks.

I have a lot of opinion on this:

1) My gut says that to re-record GH is cheesey and will overshadow new material

2) My brain says the guys deserve to get as much bank as possible

3) My hope is they re-record non hits - Keep on Runnin, Edge of the Blade, Chain Reaction....and update them a bit. Like they did live with JSS.

4) My other hope is whatever they do, I hope it helps them build awareness that they are an active band minus Perry

I wish they would have done something creative with the old songs, like Seal did with his greatest hits disc a couple years ago. But oh well....I suspect most informed buyers will drop the GH rerecorded discs in the circular file after a curious listen or two, and would just buy it to get the new material. But the deal worked out well for Journey. Do you think they would have gotten a CD of all original material produced and promoted by the world's largest retailer if they hadn't made some sort of concession like that?

yes wal mart would release just a single cd, and i suspect they will release it as a single disc either at the same time or later . with the reo you could get the 3 pack for 14.99, or after a couple of weeks just the new cd,
they also released a very good loverboy cd with no promotion as a single disc for 9.99
the other 2 discs are for the fans

I love Kevin's work on Trial By Fire (though think one of softer Journey releases and closer to Perry's solo work), Dream Theater, Rush, Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, and especially recent work with Joe Bonamassa -- stellar. I think there was a reason he buried the vocals with Journey. I recall reading that SA blew his vocals out in rehearsals before Arrival was recorded, and they went to great pains to get the vocals right for the CD. And the vocals on the Journey 2001 were not very good live (Neal was very annoyed), so a lot of work was done to correct them for the release.

So I for one am really looking forward to Kevin's latest work with Journey.
